<sparkle> we'll start with binding

<sparkle> and if we finish

<sparkle> we'll go to glitter

<sparkle> <G>

<Mar> good, thanks

<kat> Oh, sparkles glittering tonite

<deb> no we are book binding

<sparkle> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<sparkle> oh, this is one of my better webpages!

<deb> lol

<sparkle> rofl

<sparkle> y'all got lucky

<AliciaG> woo woo

<sparkle> and, go gather your supplies

<sparkle> 'cause this is so easy you'll want to work along with.

<Janet> LOL

<Janet> I still have mine from the last time, I kept meaning to like stamp on it or something

<Janet> (I have a blank typing paper book)

<deb> oh that's cool

<sparkle> 2 or 3 sheets of text weight paper, cut in half the long way (4 1/4 x 11)

<sparkle> 1 sheet of cardstock, cut in half the long way (4 1/4 x 11)

<sparkle> awl, small hole punch or push pin

<sparkle> binderclips, paperclips or clamps

<sparkle> ruler

<sparkle> pen/pencil

<sparkle> needle

<sparkle> yarn/thread/fiber

<sparkle> SO, TELL ME WHEN YOU'VE GOT THAT STUFF ASSEMBLED AND WE'LL GET STARTED

<Janet> okay. let me get my stuff.

<sparkle> SOMEONE HAS TO WORK ALONG SO I DON'T GO TOO FAST!

<Mary_ray> are the supplies mentioned up on the webpage too?

<deb> yes

<deb> at the top

<cowpost> pls post webpage addy again--I was between rooms <g>

<Mar> will this website be there for a while so i can try over the weekend?

<deb> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<sparkle> it'll be up there forever

<deb> janet - I sent the schedule

<Mar> thanks

<sparkle> or as long as i have dm space

<sparkle> <G>

<Janet> woo hoo

<cowpost> thanks--I am just listening tonight

<deb> that's ok cowpost

<Janet> You'll have DM space forever, because it would involve Nic doing something for it to go missing

<sparkle> ROFL

<Janet> :X

<sparkle> GOOD POINT

<deb> lol

<deb> yeah!!

<deb> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<Janet> I gots my stuff!

<sparkle> OK

<sparkle> EVERYONE READY?

<sparkle> HOW MANY ARE WORKING ALONG?

<Janet> I am!

<sparkle> 'CAUSE THIS IS GONNA BE BORING IF IT'S JUST ME READING THE WEBPAGE

sparkle LOOKS AT ALL THOSE OTHER IDLE PEOPLE

sparkle GIVES JANET A GOLD STAR

<AliciaG> heh

<cowpost> I'm eating dinner

<AliciaG> me too!

<Janet> oh kewl! I can put it on my book!

<sparkle> OK, THE FIRST THING YOU'RE GOING TO DO IS LEARN WHAT A BOOK SIGNATURE IS

<sparkle> A BOOK SIGNATURE IS PAGES

<sparkle> A BOOK CAN HAVE ANY NUMBER OF SIGNATURES...

<AliciaG> oh is that waht that means

<sparkle> WHEN YOU'RE HAND SEWING IN THE PAGES, THEY'RE GOING TO BE IN A MANEGABLE SIZED GROUP

<sparkle> SO, TAKE YOUR TEXT WEIGHT PAPER, THAT YOU'VE ALREADY CUT THE LONG WAY

<cowpost> is this going to be on the test?

<Janet> (oh dang, forgot my fork, brb, need a fork to eat while i'm playing with my signatures)

<sparkle> YES <g>

<sparkle> PLACE 3 OR 4 PIECES OF PAPER TOGETHER AND FOLD THEM IN HALF, TOGETHER

<sparkle> THIS IS YOUR SIGNATURE

<sparkle> NOW, TAKE YOUR PIECE OF CARDSTOCK AND FOLD IT IN HALF AND SCORE IT..THAT'S YOUR COVER

<deb> sparkle

<sparkle> YES?

<deb> is there a limit to the number of pages you can put in a signature

<sparkle> DEPENDS ON THE WEIGHT OF THE PAPER

<deb> or not

<deb> ahh ok

<sparkle> WHEN YOU FOLD AND SCORE, YOU WANT THEM TO NOT WARP SO THE EDGES ARE ALL UNEVEN

<Janet> but what if i cut them in half so they're not folded?

<sparkle> NEXT, WE'RE GONNA MAKE A TEMPLATE

<sparkle> THEN YOU GOTTA START OVER

<sparkle> rofl

<Janet> lol

<cowpost> take her star away

<sparkle> ROFL

<AliciaG> haha

<Janet> nooooooooo

<sparkle> SERIOUSLY? YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU CUT THE INSIDE PAGES...

<sparkle> BUT YOU WON'T HAVE THE NEAT FOLDED EDGE AT THE SPINE

<sparkle> OF THE SIGNATURES

<sparkle> AND YOU'LL HAVE MORE PAPERS TO KEEP IN LINE

<Janet> what i was thinking was that i could put more pages in it if i cut 'em already

<sparkle> FOR MORE PAGES, YOU WOULD JUST ADD MORE SIGNATURES

<sparkle> rofl

<deb> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<deb> lol

<brendab> ty

<deb> hey bren

<Janet> okay, i folded some more different ones

<Janet> im back with the program again

<sparkle> OK, NOW SET THOSE ASIDE <g>

<sparkle> WE'RE GONNA MAKE THE TEMPLATE SO YOU PUNCH ALL YOUR HOLES IN ALL THE SIGNATURES AND THE COVER IN TEH SAME PLACE

<Janet> ohhh okay.

<sparkle> CUT A SCRAP OF PAPER ABOUT 1" WIDE, AND AS TALL AS YOUR BOOK IS.

<sparkle> IN THIS CASE, IF YOU'RE USING A 1/2 SHEET, IT'S ABOUT 4 1/4" TALL

<deb> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<sparkle> DRAW A LINE DOWN THE CENTER, THE LONG WAY

<sparkle> SO IT'S 1/2" FROM EITHER EDGE

<sparkle> MAKE A DOT 1/2" INCH FROM BOTH ENDS ON THAT CENTERLINE

<sparkle> AND THEN, FROM THOSE DOTS, MEASURE IN 3/4" AN INCH AND MAKE ANOTHER SET OF DOTS.

<sparkle> THEN MAKE A FINAL DOT BETWEEN THOSE TWO, FOR A TOTAL OF 5 DOTS

<cowpost> 2+2+1=5!

<sparkle> ROFL..RIGHT

<sparkle> NOW, PUT YOUR SIGNATURE INSIDE THE COVER

<sparkle> AND LAY THE TEMPLATE ON TOP OF IT.

<sparkle> CLAMP IT DOWN WITH SOMETHING SO IT DOESN'T SHIFT AS YOU'RE TRYING TO POKE THE HOLES

<sparkle> USING A SMALL HOLE PUNCH, AN AWL, A PUSHPIN OR ANYTHIGN ELSE YOU FIND AROUND ON YOUR DESK OR UNDER IT

<sparkle> PUNCH THE HOLES AS INDICATED BY YOUR TEMPLATE

<cowpost> a cat?

<sparkle> IF IT'LL PUNCH A HOLE <g>

<cowpost> mine will--has all her claws

<cak> might make an interesting sewing pattern!

<sparkle> NOW...TAKE THE TEMPLATE OFF!

<sparkle> (DON'T ASK ME HOW I LEARNED THAT STEP)

<sparkle> AND CLAMP YOUR PAGES AND COVER BACK TOGETHER

<cowpost> lol i know how!

<sparkle> AND THREAD YOUR NEEDLE.

<sparkle> USE A LENGHT OF THREAD ABOUT 3X THE HEIGHT OF THE SPINE

<sparkle> FOR YOUR FIRST HOLE, GO DOWN THE TOP HOLE, FROM FRONT TO BACK, LEAVE A TAIL AND SECURE IT UNDER THE CLAMP, OUT OF YOUR WAY

<cowpost> what kind of thread?

<Janet> oh no

<sparkle> DEPENDS ON YOUR BOOK.

<Janet> dang

<enchy> lol

<sparkle> i JUST DID THE SAMPLE WITH SOME CHENILLE, 'CAUSE IT WAS HANDY

<Janet> i was supposed to take the template out?

<cowpost> what dya do, janet?

<cowpost> lol

<Janet> i thought that was part of the book

<sparkle> WAXED LINEN IS THE BOOKBINDER THREAD OF CHOICE

<cowpost> it is now!

<sparkle> rofl

<cak> If'n you use a decorative paper, it could be--

<Janet> yeah. it's my page protector piece

<Janet> yeah'

<cowpost> decoration...

<Janet> (i could unthread the first one but it's funnier to just leaveit in there)

<sparkle> rofl

<sparkle> YOU COULD DO AN ANATOMY OF THE BOOK BOOK

<sparkle> AND LEAVE IT THERE

<sparkle> NOW, BRING YOUR NEEDLE BACK AROUND TO THE FRONT OF THE SPINE AND GO DOWN THE 2ND HOLE

<sparkle> AND CONTINUE THIS TILL YOU GET TO THE BOTTOM

<deb> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<cowpost> so you coulda put more'n one signature in first?

<sparkle> YEP

<sparkle> IF YOU'RE DOING MULTIPLE SIGNATURES

<sparkle> PUNCH THEM EACH SEPARATELY SO YOU DON'T KILL YOUR HANDS

<cowpost> more than 1=multiple--got it <g>

<cak> (that's the nice thing about a template--it moves!)

<sparkle> NOW, YOU'RE AT THE LAST/BOTTOM HOLE

<sparkle> BRING THE THREAD AROUND AND PUT IT BACK DOWN THROUGH THE LAST HOLE

<sparkle> SO IT WRAPS AROUND THE SPINE

<sparkle> THEN, WORK YOUR WAY BACK UP THE SPINE THE WAY YOU CAME DOWN

<deb> http://www.dm.net/~sparkles/classes/bookmaking/crossoverbinding/

<cowpost> same hole, right?

<sparkle> YEP

<sparkle> WHEN YOU GET BACK UP TO THE TOP, WRAP AROUND THE SPINE

<sparkle> GO DOWN THE TOP HOLE AGAIN

<sparkle> THEN SECURE THE THREAD ON THE BACK OF THE BOOK

<cowpost> with a knot or tuck it?

<sparkle> OR THE FRONT IF YOU WANT TO BEAD THE TAILS

<sparkle> PRETTY MUCH ANYWAY YOU WANT MONA <g>

<cak> I bet you could tie it with a separate thread(s) for more tails too

<cowpost> well, sense I'm not *actually* doing this now....

<sparkle> LO L

<cowpost> since

<sparkle> AND YOU'RE DONE

<cowpost> da-da!

<cowpost> mine's gorgeous! thanks, sparkle!

<sparkle> LOL

<Janet> mine is lumpy

<cowpost> sounds like a personal problem

<cak> lumpy? lumpy paper or sewing?

Janet smacks mona

<sparkle> WHERE?

<cowpost> ouch!

<cowpost> her chest

<Janet> is it possible to pull the threads too tight and lump up the papers

<Janet> my papers are sorta ripply now

<sparkle> YES

<cowpost> we call that artsy

<Janet> then i think that's what i did, it really does look like I didn't set the tension right

<sparkle> YOU JUST WANT AN EVEN SNUG TENSION

<cak> May I make a suggestion? (to make it easier to open)

<cak> (I don't have a solution for Janet)

<cowpost> would it be easier if the covers were heavier--like matboard?

<sparkle> IF YOU WANT THEM TO MONA, YOU'D NEED TO HINGE THE FRONT COVER SO IT OPENS

<cowpost> lol

<sparkle> OF COURSE YOU CAN CAK

<Janet> (nobody has a solution for me. i'm insoluable)

<Mar> what is hinge the cover?

<sparkle> TO HINGE IT

<sparkle> YOU CUT IT WHERE YOU WANT IT TO OPEN

<sparkle> THEN USE A CLOTH TAPE (I USE THE FIRST AID STUFF)

<sparkle> TO TAPE IT TOGETHER WITH A SMALL SPACE

<sparkle> THEN COVER IT

<cak> Before you take the template off your signature, run a bone folder down the first page along the template edge, turn the page at the fold, score the next page, etc. til you get to the end of the pages. You're basically pre-scoring your pages

<cowpost> janet can do that now

<cak> LOL

<Mar> thanks sparkle.

<Janet> no, i'm confused already. (i was goofing off and not paying attention and I got losted in here)

<cak> tyvek could be good for making a hinge too, wouldn't it?

<MaggieB> you too janet?

<cak> what are you two confused about?

<sparkle> LOL..THERE'S STEP BY STEP WITH PICTURES ON TEH WEBPAGE

<MaggieB> i am so glad for logging

<sparkle> THAT'LL BE UP DARN NEAR FOREVER

<sparkle> THAT MAKE IT WAY EASY TO FOLLOW

<MaggieB> and the website is great sparkle

<MaggieB> thanks for a great class

<cowpost> are you going to glitter now?

<MaggieB> glitter?

<MaggieB> now they want the other class too?

<Janet> well, I didn't look on the page yet. I am eating, making this typing paper book, goofing off in the other room and I just can't look at a web page too)

<Janet> i have limited multitasking talents

<sparkle> LOL

<MaggieB> boy they are really into you tonight huh sparkle?

<deb> lol

<Janet> glitter???

<sparkle> WELL, I CAN GIVE YOU THE GLITTER PAGE URL <g>

<cowpost> ok

<sparkle> BUT, 15 MINUTES ISN'T QUITE ENOUGH TIME

<cowpost> not like I'd make that one tonight either
