<MaggieB> where is everyone???
<MaggieB> huff huff
<MaggieB> i just ran in the door!
<MaggieB> lol
<cak> Hiya--just getting some mail (after 3 days)
<Janet> Do i look more stable tonight?
<MaggieB> are you?
<MaggieB> how about the puter?
<MaggieB> huff hugg
<Janet> I haven't done the format c> thing in about 24 hours now.
<MaggieB> huff
<MaggieB> lol
<MaggieB> dont do that!
<Janet> and I have corel installed again.
<Janet> and it's working like a champ in xp
<Janet> i may start going through and restoring what backups I have later tonight.
<Janet> woo hoo!
<Janet> Kat, did you get your toolbar back?
<kat> yes
<Janet> yay!
<kat> but i didn't practice
<MaggieB> practice what?
<Janet> that's okay. you can practice this week. :)
<kat> i don't know
<MaggieB> stealing graphics?
<MaggieB> lol
<kat> lol
<MaggieB> thats what we talked about last week remember?
<Janet> lol yes, stealing and taking apart and putting back together stuff outta the clip art
<kat> i feel totally lost at this point
<MaggieB> i didnt get a chance either
<MaggieB> to take apart etc
<MaggieB> too crazy
<Janet> well it was a holiday week and all
<MaggieB> lost kat?
<Janet> i have a step by step for tonight.
<MaggieB> cool!
<kat> but Maggie, your making web pages and i can't even scan a picture of stamps and post it to the list
<MaggieB> i like that
<MaggieB> you will learn
<kat> i know
<Janet> the promised filling text with a photo or bitmap background
<MaggieB> i didnt learn overnight
<MaggieB> cool
<kat> but I want to!!!!!! LOL
<MaggieB> took me years to accumulate knowledge
<MaggieB> lol
<cak> Yay! (and lots of individual attention tonight too)
<MaggieB> good luck
<MaggieB> i guess!
<Janet> yes indeedy
<MaggieB> missing vyx and owen
<MaggieB> so where do we start?
<Janet> vyx is installing corel again, she'll be here in a few i'm sure
<MaggieB> with text?
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> doesnt take long to install
<MaggieB> wait a few?
<Janet> no. first thing is either import a photo ?
<Janet> or else draw a rectangle and fill it with a pattern fill
<MaggieB> import any photo?
<Janet> uh i mean texture fill, that's what corel's callign these
<Janet> yep, import any photo or jpg or gif you want
<Janet> start there
<Janet> and if you don't have one, draw a rectangle and fill it with a texture fill
<kat> import from where
<Janet> i know! go borrow one of your desktop graphics
<Janet> hey vyx
[cak was dropped for a while here]
<MaggieB> what a diff!
<Janet> CAK is back!
<cak> (dammit)
<MaggieB> can fill with color!
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> heh heh
<MaggieB> funny cak
<MaggieB> no grrrrrrr?
<cak> (not that I'm back--that I had to leave)
<MaggieB> just damnit huh?
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> I was thinking you were awfully quiet over there
<MaggieB> we imported a pic cak
<MaggieB> any pic
<Janet> yes, get a pic
<Janet> any pic
<MaggieB> or rectangle with fill color
<cak> I think I tried to import one a little tooooo big
<Janet> you don't got one, make a rectangle and fill with texture
<MaggieB> fancy fill
<MaggieB> ohhhhh
<Vyx> dang it, I can't open anything. How about if I just take notes.
<MaggieB> kat you there?
<Janet> i wanted to make sure what I was gonna tell you was gonna work and I made a rectangle and filled it with mahogany out of the texture fills
<MaggieB> she hasnt been heard from in a while
<Janet> vyx, make a rectangle and fill it with a texture fill
<MaggieB> kat?
<MaggieB> you there?
<Janet> and then made my word "woody" and filled it with that woodgrain
<MaggieB> cool!
<kat> I am here
<MaggieB> when working with a pic
<MaggieB> you must get the text big enough then
<kat> i imported the jpg, but it's not to be seen
<Janet> it's disappeared?
<MaggieB> it should ask you where to put it kat
<MaggieB> click on th epage
<kat> i have it
<Vyx> okay I got it
<MaggieB> click on the blank page
<MaggieB> got it?
<MaggieB> on the page?
<kat> yep
<Janet> okay, so everybody has a bitmap or something on their page now?
<MaggieB> cool
<Vyx> Yep
<MaggieB> yep
<kat> he's so cute
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> oh grandson.......lol
<MaggieB> right?>
<kat> ready
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> ready
<Janet> NOW draw a rectangle about the same size as your imported bitmap.
<Janet> maybe even draw it on top of it, just to know it's the size you want
<Janet> then move it off
<Janet> i mean off the pic
<Janet> and fill it with just white
<MaggieB> fill it?
<MaggieB> right click?
<MaggieB> left click?
<Janet> yep. left click on the white
<Janet> (right click colors the line)
<MaggieB> ty got it
<MaggieB> says so on bottom
<Janet> which you can do later, but leave the line black so you can find it
<MaggieB> fill white but outline black
<MaggieB> k
<Janet> i've filled things with white and made the outline white and then couldn't find them before
<MaggieB> lol
<MaggieB> that would be rather tough
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> so i try to get it into place before I make everything white<g>
<cak> lol (I'm glad I'm not the only one who's done that)
<MaggieB> lol
<MaggieB> not you cak?!
<Janet> (this is how we learn things, by screwing them up the first few times and recovering from that)
<MaggieB> k got the white rect
<Janet> okay!
<MaggieB> i see
<MaggieB> kat and vyx you there?
<Janet> or at least that's how I learn things. I'm a tactile learner I think
<MaggieB> i am too janet
<MaggieB> learn by doing
<Janet> they are making their white rectangles
<Vyx> yep following along
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> kat?
<MaggieB> cover that grandson up?
<Vyx> I'm done... but writing a list of stuff I have to install
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> tall order?
<Janet> I stack the install CDs
<kat> I am here, but i lost my grandson and have clouds now
<Vyx> I managed to remember how to move my rectangle after I drew it on top of the fill.
<Janet> (and then knock them over, then pick them up, then knock them over, etc.)
<MaggieB> lost him??
<MaggieB> lol
<Vyx> Janet some stuff not on cd, like Mirc, and AVG
<MaggieB> avg?
<Janet> oh. I have that stuff on CD too, the downloaded files.
<MaggieB> jant you are NOT avg
<Vyx> antivirus software
<MaggieB> oh
<Vyx> I didn't think of that. Maybe this time I will.
<Vyx> cept I'm outta blanks
<Janet> it's very atractively labeled with a scrawled "download crap" in sharpie on it
<MaggieB> so now what do we do janet?
<MaggieB> lol
<Vyx> hehe
<MaggieB> so descriptive!
<Janet> okay. make sure your rectangle isn't touching your bitmap first
<Vyx> you know I got labels and stuff to make pretty cds... and used it ONCE.
<MaggieB> why?
<Janet> then put text in the white rectangle
<Janet> because I told you do.<g>
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> any particular font?
<Janet> actually because you'll be wanting to select the white rectangle and the text and you don't want to accidentally select the pic too
<MaggieB> one that has outlines?
<Janet> naw, any font will do
<Janet> a nice fat font shows more of the pic
<Janet> but you may want a nice delicate font that just shows a tiny bit of the pic
<Janet> whatever appeals
<Janet> then after you type what you want, jack up the point size until it's good and filling the white rectangle
<Janet> and say when you have that done
<MaggieB> NOT GETTING bigger
<MaggieB> hmmm
<Janet> highlight it with the mouse
<Vyx> lol, I dropped my mouse
<Janet> lol
<cak> I'm good to go
<Janet> i dropped my mouse in my cup of coffee once
<Janet> it was not a good thing
<cak> coffee baptism
<Janet> other than I'd wanted a new mouse anyhow
<Janet> it cleaned up and worked initially but it was dead within the month
<Janet> over caffinated I guess
<cak> lol--just too much for its system
<Vyx> ack I just dropped mine on the floor... ran it right off the mouse pad and klunk
<Janet> this is why i don't have a cordless mouse, Vyx
<Vyx> Okay, I have large text in a box
<Janet> otherwise i'd drop it and lose it
<Janet> okay!
<Janet> kat?
<Vyx> oh geez, no! It would get lost on the desk!
<Janet> marge?
<kat> I'm here and i have large text in a box
<Vyx> yay
<Janet> woo hoo
<MaggieB> is there a way?
<kat> and clouds
<MaggieB> to make it fill the box?
<kat> in another box
<Janet> yes, select the text and stretch it out to fill
<MaggieB> oh duh
<MaggieB> ty
<Janet> it doesn't have to completely fill it
<MaggieB> my mind is fried!
<MaggieB> lol
<kat> that would have been much easier than what i just did
<Janet> lol
<Janet> how did you do it?
<kat> i used the font size
<Vyx> selected and then scrolled down the number thingie
<Janet> that works too
<kat> and then tried to move the text which was not easy
<kat> now i know 2 ways
<MaggieB> i cant get it to do that
<cak> you get less distortion that way, don't you? (increasing the font size)
<kat> you have to hilite it maggie
<Janet> and if this were a real project, it's likely you'd be using a font to match other fonts on the page, and you'd want to keep the proportions of it right
<MaggieB> how do i get just the text?
<Janet> so changing the point size is the method of choice, usually
<Janet> you can grab and pull on a corner and it will stretch to proportion and the point size automagically changes, though
<MaggieB> what are the white boxes?
<Vyx> remembering what size you use from one page to another is nice, too.
<MaggieB> its not in a box
<Janet> the white boxes are characters that your font doesn't have
<MaggieB> no on outside of box
<Janet> you've got the box selected too.
<Janet> sounds like
<Vyx> I have little white boxes right before the first letter of each line
<MaggieB> shit
<MaggieB> now i lost my text!
<Vyx> oops
<Janet> oh yes, those are the boxes you can click and change the specs of each letter
<kat> that's better than loosing your grandson
<Janet> oh well, type ya some more
<Janet> LOL yeah
<MaggieB> no not with the funny arrow
<cak> I have little white boxes along the base line of the text--
<MaggieB> those are iwth the 2nd tool
<Vyx> those are the mover ones aren't they?
<MaggieB> not those
<cak> Ah!
<Janet> yep
<Janet> marge, if you have white boxes instead of letters, you've used letters or symbols your font doesn't include
<Janet> a lot of shareware fonts won't have numbers, for example.
<Janet> and so you either get a blank space or else a white box
<MaggieB> no not there!
<MaggieB> on the outside of the box
<Janet> okay. where?
<MaggieB> top and bottom
<MaggieB> i had to back up
<MaggieB> cannot get font to fit
<kat> I habve those too
<Janet> don't worry about those now
<MaggieB> K
<Janet> just type some text and then stretch it out to fit
<MaggieB> i have pieces of rectangle around the page
<MaggieB> weird
<Janet> time for a reboot?<g>
<MaggieB> ok
<Vyx> or refresh the screen?
<MaggieB> i have text running up and down
<MaggieB> how do i make it bigger?
<MaggieB> to fill?
<Janet> while Maggie is workign on her text, everybody else, select your text and your white box (making sure the text is positioned in the box just how you want it to be)
<Janet> maggie, click the arrow tool, then click the text and you'll get grabbers to stretch it out with
<MaggieB> gotcha
<MaggieB> did it
<Vyx> do I select with the text tool or ?
<Janet> actually I should say that in order... place your text in your white box exactly how you want it to be.
Vyx is feeling stupid tonight
<Janet> select with the pointer
<Janet> oh and make sure you don't have typos in it, once we pass this step there's no editing it
<MaggieB> select all objects?
<Vyx> okay!
<Janet> no, just select your text and your white box
<Janet> make sure you do NOT have your pic selected
<MaggieB> click with arrow holding shift down?
<Janet> yep
<MaggieB> k
<Vyx> oh, nice
<Janet> and after you have text and white box selected, go up into the "arrange" menu and pick combine
<MaggieB> poof!
<Janet> (or use the keyboard shortcut of control-L )
<cak> you could select all and shift-click on the pattern box to deselect too, couldn't you?
<Vyx> wow
<MaggieB> there are the negative letters again
<Janet> you could, Charlotte
<MaggieB> now we are going to move them onto the pic??
<Janet> and what you end up with after doing the combine thing, is a rectangle with your letters cut out of it
<Janet> we are!
<Janet> we're going to move this right on top of our pic
<cak> (handy if you have lots of little crap floating around you want to select)
<Vyx> oh wow, how neat!
<MaggieB> i picked the wrong pic
<MaggieB> but thats okay
<MaggieB> learning
<Vyx> that is awesome Janet
<Janet> yeah, now you know how to do it, you can do it with anything
<Vyx> have to remember to fill the box with white first
<kat> I can't combine the two
<MaggieB> now do we combine those?
<MaggieB> and save as gif?
<Janet> like you could get one of those symbols and make it real big and like use the pennies fill and have a big dollar sign on top. all sorts of applications
<MaggieB> with white as transparent?
<kat> I can't select the block and the font
<Janet> yes, unless you like your lines black (or any color, you can make your lines any color)
<MaggieB> oh now we make the lines white
<kat> the block has a broken line around it, does that mean anything
<Janet> the white rectangle, kat?
<MaggieB> are you holding shift down kat?
<kat> yes
<MaggieB> with pointer not text tool
<kat> to both question
<Janet> yeah. okay, kat, get your pointer tool and click once on the white rectangle, then hold down the shift key and click on the text
<Janet> down at the bottom you should have "two objects selected" or something like that
<kat> did that, can only select one or the other
<Janet> hold down the shift key while you select the second one
<MaggieB> so get rid of black line around white rect janet?
<Janet> well, it's your graphic, Maggie, decide if you want that black line or not. you might want to outline your letters with black or some color
<Janet> in fact, you can go into your line menu and change it to a dashed line or a dotted line or all of those choices too
<MaggieB> then do we have to combine the two?
<Vyx> how do I make it stay together? the cutout on top of the picture block?
<MaggieB> oh ok
<MaggieB> yes janet, do we combine the two?
<MaggieB> and then save as a gif with white the tranparent color or what?
<Vyx> I tried that, can't figure out how to combine em.
<MaggieB> maybe we dont have to
<Janet> no. you can group the two, but you may or may not be able to combine
<MaggieB> didnt have to for the reverse
<MaggieB> dont need to?
<MaggieB> just save as gif?
<MaggieB> with white as transparent?
<MaggieB> color?
<Janet> and your last step on this one is to do a select all and export "selected only" as a gif
<MaggieB> oooohhhhh
<Janet> or just hit your print screen button and paste it into your paint program
<MaggieB> select all
<Vyx> yeah, select all and then combine works. (duh)
<Janet> i'm lazy, I do the print screen thing a lot and then just crop it
<MaggieB> select all OBJECTS?
<Janet> yes
<Janet> of course you do that and you'll find your missing text<g>
<MaggieB> no, still there
<kat> ok, I can get the blocks under my letters and around the box now, but the combine is not available to use
<MaggieB> under letters?
<Janet> does it look cool, Kat?
<MaggieB> kat the top aarrow
<MaggieB> not the funny arrow
<MaggieB> the top arrow
<kat> i can't combine them
<Janet> kat, maybe do the select all, then hold down the shift key and click the pic to de-select that. then you can combine
<MaggieB> if i do select all then the combine is not available
<kat> no combine is not available
<Vyx> This was fun. But I have to go cuz dh can't get his email or anything so I have to figure out what is wrong and try to fix it.
<Janet> i don't think you can combine a bitmap (which is what your pic is) and your corel objects
<MaggieB> i can group or lock objects
<Janet> but it doesn't matter, because once you stack them you want to export them as a gif
<MaggieB> mine is a jpg
<Janet> or else a jpg
<Janet> or whatever
<MaggieB> and still wont
<Janet> Vyx, go kick the email next<g>
<MaggieB> just export on top of one another as a gif?
<cak> exporting them flattens them to one object?
<Janet> yep
<MaggieB> and designate white for transparent color?
<Janet> so you want it to be just what you want before you do it, there's no going back
<Janet> yes, Maggie.
<MaggieB> ty
<Janet> EXCEPT...
<MaggieB> oh..... a BUT!
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> if your pic has a lot of white in it?
<Vyx> g'night all thanks Janet
<MaggieB> yes?
<Janet> you know how sometimes you'll make a transparent background gif and there's a lot of white in the pic so you get transparent where you don't want it?
<Janet> at least with Corel you can change the box color to some color not in the photo and make the transparent color that one
<MaggieB> oh i see what you mean
<MaggieB> so if no red make the original fill red
<MaggieB> not white
<Janet> i hate it when I get background like up someone's nose or in the whites of their eyes
<MaggieB> lol
<MaggieB> i understand
<Janet> woo hoo!!
<MaggieB> throw a party maggie understands?
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> kat, you did get the rectangle with the letters cut out of it, didn't you?
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> this is the opposite of the one we did witht he cutout letters that had the background show through
<Janet> yep
<MaggieB> cool
<Janet> it's the same principle, but applied differently
<MaggieB> opposites
<MaggieB> cool
<Janet> same concept, different application
<kat> i have the rectangle, i have the letters and i have clouds, but they don't combing
<kat> e
<Janet> kat, you just want to combine the letters and the white rectangle. make sure your clouds aren't selected
<MaggieB> when you combien the white rect and text the letters go negative kat
<MaggieB> and then move the rect on top of the clouds
<MaggieB> and poof the clouds show only in the text
<MaggieB> cept with clouds you might want to use red fill huh janet?
<MaggieB> or it might bleed
<Janet> yeah, you might. or a navy
<Janet> or a bleed might look cool, too
<MaggieB> is it working kat?
<kat> I can't get the letters and rectangle to combine
<Janet> I don't understand why not, though.
<MaggieB> using the top arrow kat?
<Janet> can you select the two of them?
<Janet> where it says two objects selected at the bottom status bar?
<MaggieB> click on the text
<MaggieB> then hold shift and click on rect
<MaggieB> and then combine with arrange/combine
<MaggieB> worked with mine and your version is the same
<MaggieB> kat are you using the top arrow to point?
<cak> did you draw the rectangle kat, or are you using the default rectangle? (that one denotes the page)
<Janet> i'm beginning to suspect the grandson photo has snuck under there somewhere and that's why you can't combine
<MaggieB> hmmmmm
<kat> I used the rectangle tool
<cak> Oh! those grandkids are such rascals!
<MaggieB> lol
<kat> yes they are
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> did you delete him kat?
<cak> (sorry---it's something I've been tempted to do, so I wanted company)
<MaggieB> but he wasnt with the text
<Janet> y'all play with this and play with taking apart your clipart and we'll see you next week
<MaggieB> to begin with
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> is there a 10pm class?
<Janet> brenda's fixing to start. see you over in #craftclass
<Janet> hi and bye, Diane
<Janet> race ya to #craftclass
<MomCat> hi and bye
<MaggieB> ty janet
<kat> i will work on this this week
