<kristi> can someone do the URL thing for me?

<kristi> http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<Libster> I can Kristi

<cak> Hi all

<kristi> TY LIB

<kat> Hi all

<Angel> hello,hello one and all!

<Libster> yw

<kat> brb

<MaggieB> ty kristi

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<MaggieB> corel paint work ok?

<^raVen^> hi angel!

<kristi> YES - i JUST CAN'T TELL YOU THE SPECIFIC TOOLS TO USE

<Scout> I'm here with Buffy and 5 raviolis left, who shall I throw them to?

<^raVen^> yes indeed, Maggie

<Angel> me,me!

<MaggieB> ok

<Libster> I am full of lentil pilaf, thanks anyway

<MaggieB> i am new to paint anyhow

<Angel> yummm..

<Janet> Kristi, if you tell the function of the tool they should be able to figure it out.

<MaggieB> iwill pay attention and then play

Libster passes out Jen's caramels

^raVen^ just passes out

<Libster> LOL

paperpusher swoons for caramels

<Angel> jens caramels..oh my!

<kristi> YEAH - i DID JUST OPEN PHOTOPAINT TOO

<kristi> SO I CAN DO SOME POKING AROUND

<kristi> ARE MANY WORKING ALONG TONIGHT?

<brenda> not me

<Libster> I am just watching and learning

<brenda> just listening trying to learn

<cak> I'm going to try--

<paperpushe> mary ray!!!

<Libster> Hi Mary!!

<brenda> oh go cak

<Mary-ray> hey!

<^raVen^> hi Mary R

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<brenda> hey mary ray

<Janet> That is an excellent tutorial there, Kristi

<kristi> OK

<Mary-ray> am I late?

<Libster> no

<Angel> iam here to be social, and listenlol

<Libster> LOL

<Mary-ray> I'm logging!

<kristi> IF YOU GO TO THE URL YOU'LL SEE I DID NOT START WITH A PARTICULARLY GOOD PHOTO

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<kristi> I DID THIS BECAUSE I NEED TO CARVE IT FOR A GIFT AND IT WILL SHOW YOU THAT IT CAN BE DONE FROM A NOT SO GOOD PHOTO

<Janet> you picked a challenging one. like most of mine, lots of similar colors and all

<cak> what's the best type to start with--high contrast?

<kristi> HIGH CONTRAST - ALSO A DISTINCT LIGHT SOURCE FROM ONE SIDE IS A BIT EASIER THAN FROM STRAIGHT ON

<cak> gotcha--thanks

<kristi> I RECOMMEND WORKING WITH AN IMAGE AROUND 150 DPI SO IT PRINTS DECENTLY, BUT I HAVE WORKED WITH SOME THAT ARE ONLY 72 DPI

<kristi> IF MY COMPUTER SYSTEM CAN HANDLE IT, I LIKE TO WORK IN DOUBLE THE DPI AS I WANT TO PRINT

<kristi> THIS ONE WAS ACTUALLY ONLY 96 DPI AS THAT WAS THE FORMAT OF THE DIGITAL PHOTO

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<brenda> hey kriz

<MaggieB> boy where have we heard that one before? {janet}?

<kristi> TO CUT DOWN ON SYSTEM RESOURCES, THE FIRST THING I DID WAS CROP AROUND THE SUBJECT

<Janet> LOL

<kristi> THERE IS A SPECIFIC TOOL IN PHOTOSHOP, IN PHOTOPAINT YOU MAKE A MASK AND THEN CROP TO THE MASK

<Janet> okay. i'm cropped.

<MaggieB> we already knew that janet!

<MaggieB> lol

<Angel> lol

<MaggieB> ohhhh cropped.....

<paperpushe> Janet cut her hair? Oh no!!!

<kristi> NOW, THE NEXT STEP YOU MAY OR MAY NOT NEED TO DO

<Janet> LOL

<Angel> ha!

<Libster> Hi Kris

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<kristi> BECAUSE THIS IS SUCH A BAD PHOTO (SHOOTING INTO LIGHT - IT'S A NO-NO, BUT THE PIC OP WAS THERE AND i HAD TO TAKE IT, LOL!)

<kristi> I ADJUSTED THE BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST UP FRONT (YOU'LL BE DOING THIS AGAIN AT THE END :-)

<kristi> YOU'LL NOTICE IT'S A BIT GRAINY - IT DOESN'T MATTER A WHOLE LOT BECAUSE YOU ARE CHANGING THINGS SO MUCH TO CARVE - IT SHOULDN'T DO THAT IF YOU STARTED WITH A GOOD PHOTO

<kristi> NOW, I DON'T WANT ALL THE BACKGROUND CLUTTER IN MY CARVING

<kristi> SO IN PHOTOSHOP I USE A TOOL FOR CREATING AN IRREGULAR MASK OR SELECTION CALLED THE LASSO TOOL

<kristi> IT ALLOWS YOU TO SORT OF TRACE HARD EDGES

<Janet> (we do that in photo paint with the masking)

<kristi> WHEN USING IT, IT'S BEST TO ERR TOWARDS THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR SUBJECT - YOU CAN ALWAYS TAKE AWAY MORE LATER (AND I DO IN THIS EXAMPLE)

<kristi> IF YOUR SUBJECT IS QUITE DIFFERENT IN COLOR FROM THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN ALSO USE THE MAGIC WAND TOOL THAT SELECTS SIMILAR COLORS

<Janet> i'm masked now (cleared out the background) but I still need more contrast.

<kristi> THEN GO BACK IN ADJUST IT MORE

<kristi> I'LL ALSO SHOW YOU A BIT LATER HOW TO FAKE MORE CONTRAST WHERE IT DOESN'T EXIST :-)

<kristi> EACH PICTURE IS DIFFERENT AND WILL REQUIRE DIFFERENT STEPS AND AMOUNTS OF ADJUSTMENT

<Libster> Hi blue

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<paperpushe> Hey blue made it!

<kristi> I'M ONLY GOING TO PRESENT YOU WITH SOME THE TOOLS I FIND MOST HELPFUL IN PREPPING PHOTOS FOR CARVING

<Janet> I'm working with a cookie scan

<bluebell> Heelllooo

<Janet> so not a lot of contrast

<paperpushe> Cookie scan Janet?

<brenda> hey blu you made it

<kristi> ARE YOU PUTTING FOOD ON YOUR SCANNER AGAIN??? LOL!

<Libster> LOL

<Janet> yeah, I scanned a christmas cookie, it would make a way cool carving

<Janet> LOL yep

<bluebell> a bit late but I made it

<kristi> KEWL

<paperpushe> leave it to Janet!

<kristi> ONCE YOU CARBE YOU FIND SO MUCH INSPIRATION

Libster wonders if she should scan that pnut butter sandwich...

<kristi> I TOOK A PLACEMAT HOME FROM AN INDIAN RESTAURANT BECAUSE THE BORDER WOULD MAKE A COOL STAMP, LOL!

<Libster> LOL Kristi

UnkyJack tries scanning a slice of pizza and a donut

<bluebell> brb gone to get something to eat

<Libster> LOL Jack!!!

<kristi> I CLEANED UP SOME OF MY LINES ON THE PHOTO BY MAGNIFYING IT AND THEN USING THE MAGIC WAND TOOL TO REMOVE SOME THE EXTRANEOUS BACKGROUND

<paperpushe> Jack, now you've made blue hungry

<kristi> I DID LEAVE THE DARK AROUND THE BOTTOM ON THE HAIR ON THE LEFT BECAUSE IT'S SO HIGHLIGHTED THERE THAT IT GIVES ME A GOOD LINE OF WHERE THE HAIR EDGE IS THAT i WOULD HAVE IF I CLEANED IT PERFECTLY

paperpusher wants a magic wand

<Libster> That is a good idea, Kristi

<kristi> WHAT SOFTWARE ARE YOU USING PP?

<paperpushe> The Print Shop and a few others

<kristi> I KNOW PHOTOPAINT HAS ONE

<paperpushe> I'll check it out

<kristi> AND I'M SURE PSP DOES, I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S CALLED

<Libster> I carved Larry using Adobe PhotoDeluxe

<paperpushe> I did do one of these this afternoon with some software that came with a cheapie digicam

<UnkyJack> It's a magic wand in PSP

<kristi> NOW, YOU CAN VARY THESE STEPS TO WHAT SUITS THE PHOTO

<UnkyJack> PSP has a lasso too

<kristi> I AM CONTINUING IN COLOR MODE, BUT CHANGING TO GRAY SCALE WOULD BE APPROPRIATE AS WELL

<Janet> mine still looks pretty crumby

<kristi> I FELT THAT LEAVING THE COLOR IN PROVIDES CONSTRAST SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE IMAGE BETTER

<bluebell> thank God for peanut butter

<kristi> IF I WANT TO DO LOTS OF DETAIL, I USE THE POSTER EDGES FILTER

<brenda> hey queen

<kristi> IT SORT OF FINDS THE EDGES AND TRACES THEM WITH BLACK

<TheQueen> hello

<paperpushe> Hey Queen!

<TheQueen> long time no see pp

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<paperpushe> lol queen

<kristi> YOU CAN ADJUST THE THICKNESS, INTENSITY AND POSTERIZATION

<Janet> oh. edge detection. let me try that

<Janet> and polarization

<bluebell> you people must have giant screens!

<MaggieB> hey, who's mug is this we are staring at kristi??

<bluebell> paaapeeerr

<paperpushe> what blue

<bluebell> whats happening ?

<kristi> DREW'S SISTER, JESSIE

<paperpushe> private message me, blue...click on my name in the list

<MaggieB> oh, ok! ty

<bluebell> we aren't carving are we

<kristi> NO - JUST PREPARING TO :-)

<kristi> EDGE DETECT DID STRANG THINGS JANET - DID IT WORK ON YOURS OK?

<Janet> I think I'm ready to give up, Kristi, and start drawing on my lines

<Janet> nope

<brenda> lol janet

<Janet> edge detection didn't work for me

Libster hugs Janet

<Janet> but I can draw lines right on top of my scan, easy deal

<Janet> easier than drawing it from scratch, that's for sure

<kristi> YEAH - THAT'S HOW I DID THE STAMP OF OUR HOUSE

<Janet> (and I just tiled christmas cookies on my desktop, too)

<kristi> USED THE PEN TOOL TO DO EVERYTHING

<Janet> yum

<kristi> I HAVEN'T FOUND A SIMILAR TOOL ON PHOTOPAINT YET - SORRY

<kristi> THEN, I GREYSCALED

<kristi> IT'S USUALLY UNDER SOMETHING LIKE "CHANGE MODE"

<Janet> probably the paint brush, using the ink pen setting

<Janet> or convert?

<Janet> i think it's convert.

Janet wonders if she can successfully have chat, photo shop and photo paint all open at the same time

<Janet> plus a couple pages in IE

<bluebell> yup

<kristi> NOW, JUST TO GET A FEEL OF THINGS, I LIKE TO GO IN AND FIDDLE WITH THE BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST AGAIN

TheQueen wonders if janet can walk and chew gum at the same time

<kristi> TURN THE CONTRAST ALL THE WAY UP

<kristi> YOU MAY LOOSE FEATURES - REMEMBER WHAT/WHERE THEY ARE

Libster thinks, oh no!! Kristi is fiddlin' again!!

<kristi> I ALWAYS FIDDLE LIB

<Libster> LOL

<kristi> EACH PHOTO IS DIFFERENT AND NEEDS DIFFERENT THINGS DONE TO IT

<kristi> IF YOU DON'T LIKE HOW IT LOOKS, USE UNDO

<kristi> IN PHOTOSHOP THERE ARE TWO TOOLS THAT WILL BECOME YOUR FRIEND IN PREPPING LOWER CONTRAST IMAGES FOR CARVING

<Libster> undo and delete two wonderful things!

<kristi> BURN AND DODGE TOOLS

<kristi> THE BURN TOOL ALLOWS YOU TO PICK A "BRUSH" AND WILL DARKEN THINGS OVER WHICH YOU PASS

<kristi> IF YOU GO OVER IT MULTIPLE TIMES IT DARKENS IT MORE

<kristi> THE DODGE TOOL DOES THE OPPOSITE - IT LIGHTENS

<kristi> USE THESE TO CREATE GREATER CONTRAST IN THE PHOTO WHERE NEEDED

<kristi> ON THIS PHOTO, I USED THE DODGE A LOT ON HER FOREHEAD AND UNDER HER EYES TO REMOVE LINES THAT WOULD MAKE HER LOOK MUCH OLDER THAN HER 21 YEARS

<Janet> this is the stage i'm at now. time to zero in on my wishy washy areas

<kristi> I USED THE BURN TOOL A BUNCH ON THE UPPER LEFT OF THE HAT TO FIND THAT DELINEATING LINE

<kristi> YOU JUST KEEP USING THESE TOOLS AND GOING BACK TO ADJUST THE CONTRAST UP TO +100 AND SEEING HOW IT LOOKS, USING UNDO AND DODGING AND BURNING MORE UNTIL IT SATISFIES YOU

<Scout> Going to my 50 year reunion next summer, could we use a little of this on me before I go?

<kristi> LOL

<kristi> I WASN'T OVERLY PICKY IN THIS ONE BECAUSE I AM NOW MOSTLY USING TISSUE PAPER TRANSFER AND THERE IS ENOUGH DETAIL FOR ME TO TRACE AND WHAT i DON'T WANT I WON'T TRACE

<bluebell> this has been fun - but have to go - bye everyone

<kristi> I LIKE DOING THIS BECAUSE IT ADDS A BIT MORE OF MY OWN FLAVOR TO THE DESIGN WITH THAT EXTRA STEP IN THERE

<kristi> BYE BLUE

<paperpushe> bye blue

<paperpushe> come back again

<kristi> THIS IS FOR A MORE DETAILED CARVING THOUGH

<kristi> I WASN'T REALLY HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME (AT LEAST FOR THE PROJECT I HAVE IN MIND FOR THIS STAMP)

<kristi> SO I WENT THROUGH THE SIMILAR ACTIONS, BUT SWITCHED WHICH FILTER I USED

<brenda> i think it is neat

<kristi> THE TOP ONE ON THE LAST PAGE?

<kristi> FOR THE LAST ONE ON THE LAST PAGE I USED A FILTER CALLED "CUT-OUT" WHICH TOOK AND REMOVED MINOR DETAILS (LIKE THE FACIAL LINES)

<kristi> AGAIN, I DID A LOT OF WORK WITH THE DODGE AND BURN TOOL BEFORE DECIDING IT WAS GOOD

<kristi> THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU GUYS IS TO PLAY WITH THE VARIOUS EFFECTS AND TOOLS YOU HAVE

<^raVen^> Corel note! convert to greyscale first... adjust... use sponge tool on remove stting

<kristi> TRYING PREPPING A PHOTO SEVERAL DIFFERENT TIMES

<kristi> EACH TIME YOU'LL COME OUT WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT

<kristi> ALSO, DON'T BE AFRAID TO LET A DESIGN SIT FOR A DAY OR TWO BEFORE CARVING - OFTEN YOU'LL BE HAPPIER ONCE THERE IS A BIT OF DISTANCE

<Janet> let me put up my cookie. i need advice I think

<kristi> OK

<kristi> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS WHILE WE WAIT FOR JANET TO SHARE HER COOKIES?

<paperpushe> I wanna chocolate chip, Janet

<Janet> LOL

<Janet> http://dm.net/~janet/cookie.html

<brenda> neat looking janet

<Libster> that would be good to carve, Janet

<cak> why aren't you happy with that Janet? It look great for carving (to my inexperienced eye)

<Janet> yeah, but carving it, i didn't save that many steps from just going from the original scan

<Janet> (It was for sure good to eat. yummy)

<Janet> any suggestions for me?

<Janet> (well and my printing copy is a bit sharper than what I put up, I lost a lot of the size for you all to be able to load it in this lifetime)

<^raVen^> hey... that cookie would make an awesome penscore stamp

<Janet> wouldn't it?

<Libster> what is a pinscore stamp?

<kristi> USE CUT-OUT

<Janet> cut out?

<kristi> I GOT IT HALF WAY DECENT WITH NO FIDDLING - IT WOULD BE CARVABLE WITH MORE TIME

<Janet> I think the crumbs are bothering me

<kristi> YEAH, THE TEXTURE OF THE COOKING SHOWING UP, RIGHT?

<Janet> yeah, some individual attention on the various areas

<Janet> yeah.

<Janet> i wanted it to be a non-cookie line drawing

<kristi> YOU COULD ALSO TRY AFTER GOING TO GRAYSCAL, USING THE MAGIC WAND TO REMOVE SOME OF THE INNER AREAS

<Janet> (although just going and snatching a painting of st nicholas and working from that would probably be easier)

<kristi> SOMETIMES IT IS :-)

<Janet> but then it wouldn't be my cookie<g>

<Janet> oh. magic wanding the mid bits. that would help quite a bit.

<Janet> then a couple more times through poster edges

<Janet> and through contrast mapping

<kristi> WELL, SOMETIMES, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY YOU CAN'T GET SOME OF THEM TO TURN OUT USING THESE TOOLS

<kristi> THEN DOING A LINE DRAWING ON TOP WORKS GREAT

<Janet> well, then I start drawing on my bitmap with the paint brush. :)

<Janet> or else just transfering it and carving whatever i want

<kristi> THAT MIGHT BE THE BEST OPTION HERE SINCE THE "LINES" THEMSELVES HAVE SUCH A CONTRAST MAKING THEM UP

<Janet> tell us how to transfer it?

<kristi> YOU CAN DO AN ACETONE TRANSFER WITH A LASER PRINTOUT OR PHOTOCOPY OF THE IMAGE

<kristi> SOAK A COTTON BALL IN ACETONE, PUT THE IMAGE FACE DOWN ON THE CARVING MATERIAL AND BURNISH IT WITH THE SOAKED COTTON BALL

<kristi> YOU CAN PICK UP CORNERS TO SEE HOW IT TRANSFERED

<kristi> OR, YOU CAN TRACE THE DESIGN ONTO TRACING PAPER USING A SOFT LEAD PENCIL

<Libster> class url- http://www.kurki15rs.com/photocarving.html

<kristi> THEN PLACE THAT FACE DOWN ON THE CARVING MATERIAL AND BURNISH WITH ANYTHING FROM YOUR FINGER TO A BONE FOLDER OR A BOTTLE CAP (TY RAVEN)

<kristi> THEN, TRACE OVER IT ON THE CARVING MATERIAL WITH A BALL POINT PEN (THE PENCIL WILL SMUDGE ON YOU)

<Janet> dang. I gotta go. I'll keep on this later.

<Janet> Thank you for class, this was great and I'm inspired again.

<cak> night janet

<Libster> night Janet
