<kat> hi all
<cak> hi
<cak> just working on a paper due tomorrow
<cak> how are you tonight?
<kat> trying to combine dream on a background
<cak> No luck yet?
<kat> no
<kat> i even started over and went over the log
<cak> I know we're not telling you something--something really basic. (it's *always* something basic it seems)
<kat> I have my picture, i have my words, I can get to the white box and then nother
<kat> i know, i always make things more complicated than they are
<kat> what are you going to school for
<cak> that just means you're smart enough to see all the different paths
<kat> ty
<cak> so you have your background pic, and your words and your white rectangle the same size as the pic?
<cak> (if you don't mind my working on it with you)
<kat> it is smaller, maybe that is the problem
<kat> not at all
<cak> it's a *lot* easier if it is at least the same size, bigger is OK too
<kat> ok, i will do that
<cak> heey Owen
<cak> (sorry one-handed typing)
<Owen> Hi.
<cak> Kat, is your word big enough to fill the pic in at least one direction?
<kat> yes
<cak> (we're doing some review on combining to layering over another background
<Owen> Wheres the teacher?
<cak> Have you dragged the word on top of the white rectangle?
<cak> I don't know--probably loading a web page for us!
<kat> the word was in the white rectangle
<Owen> Okay.
<cak> (she *was* going to be able to be here this week, wasn't she?)
<cak> can you select both the words and the white rectangle?
<kat> yes, got that
<cak> Now you should be able to combine them (control L or just go the the menu--Arrange?)
cak is crossing her fingers
<kat> no such luck
<cak> rats! is it grayed out then?
<cak> (Janet just signed on, she should be here soon)
<Janet> i'm so sorry I'm late
<Owen> Hi Janet.
<kat> it was
<cak> Hi Ms Janet--we were just doing some problem solving on combining
<Janet> how is everybody tonight
<Janet> oh good. tell me
<kat> not very combined
<kat> lol
<cak> OK, try this> make sure you have the pick tool selected (the top arrow in your tool box)
<kat> ok
MaggieB-logging quietly tiptoes in the room.....
<kat> hi maggie
<MaggieB-lo> hey janet just got here?
<MaggieB-lo> lol
<MaggieB-lo> good@!!!!
<cak> then start drawing a rectangle that includes the rectangle and word with a generous margin
<Janet> yep <blush>
<MaggieB-lo> in that case i am not late!
<MaggieB-lo> cool
<cak> (this will make sure both are selected)
<cak> after you do this, is the combine option active?
<MaggieB-lo> we reviewing last week?
<MaggieB-lo> sounds familiar...
<Janet> trying to get Kat's text and rectangle combined
<MaggieB-lo> ok
<cak> yeah--kat's combine is being recalcitrant
<MaggieB-lo> thats cool
<MaggieB-lo> i dont understand why
<MaggieB-lo> she is using my software
<MaggieB-lo> and i had no problem last week
<kat> no ig is not active
<kat> yesterday i lost all my fonts on my computer
<kat> got them back by just restarting the computer
<MaggieB-lo> or it said it could not find them>
<MaggieB-lo> that happens
<cak> the only thing I can think of is that only one item is selected--but that doesn't seem to be the problem
<MaggieB-lo> to me too
<Janet> or that there's a third hiding under there maybe
<kat> i started over janet
<Janet> dang.
<cak> oh! how would that affect the combine?
<kat> i'll work on it later so we can go on
<MaggieB-lo> should work because same exact software
<Janet> well, it shouldn't I wouldn't think. but I'm confused by it anyway
<cak> lol
<MaggieB> always something!
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> will control-L work?
<kat> no
<Janet> dang
<MaggieB> dang is right
<MaggieB> makes no sense
<kat> i think i am making something more complicated than it really is
<cak> (BRB--I guess I should start CD)
<kat> we can go on and i will catch up
<MaggieB> probably, i did that with the break apart stuff
<MaggieB> after i went back to the log and did it step by step it clicked
<Janet> well, I'm not sure where to go from here, what do you all want to learn?
<MaggieB> suggestions?
<Janet> want to fit text to a path?
<MaggieB> we dont know what the software can do
<MaggieB> path?
<cak> hmmmmm
<Janet> or play more with curve nodes and modes?
<kat> yes, like old fashioned signage
<MaggieB> what is that?
<Janet> Well, that answers that. Let's fit text to a path. :)
<MaggieB> text to a path?
<MaggieB> ok
<MaggieB> not sure i know what you mean tho
<Janet> First of all, type something. Anything and in any font that pleases you.
<MaggieB> like fitting text to a shape?
<cak> you can make the text undulate across the page
<Janet> yes, like curving text around in a circle
<Janet> yeah. i like it undulating. :)
<MaggieB> ok, cool
<Owen> Yes, Janet
<Owen> I want to know about that.
<MaggieB> ok i typed "type anything you want"
<Janet> This is fun stuff.
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> cool
<Janet> good start, Maggie. :)
<MaggieB> heh heh
<MaggieB> hey i just practiced foxtrot for 2 hours and my mind is fried.....
<Janet> now draw a line. a curvy line
<MaggieB> how do you do that?
<Janet> pencil tool?
<Janet> okay. I gotta load up corel.<g>
<MaggieB> artistic media tool?
<MaggieB> what are all of these in the flyout???
<Janet> freehand tool. the one under the magnifying glass
<MaggieB> but there appear to be 3 pencils
<MaggieB> which do i use for what??
<Janet> goodness! I don't know. new stuff in the last couple versions I haven't played much with. :)
<MaggieB> and how come they dont tell me?
<Janet> pick the pencil that is the freehand tool, since I know how to tell about that one.
<MaggieB> shouldnt they tell me when in put the mouse on them?
<cak> (there's a spiral in the polygon tool)
<kat> Maggie, it is in the 4th one down, the first tool in that box
<Janet> oh a spiral with words spiraling in would be cool
<MaggieB> hey
<kat> wow, i found something before everyone else
<MaggieB> it makes the curve look nicer
<Janet> but you need to know how to draw a line anyway.<g>
<kat> i think
<kat> lol
<Janet> yay Kat!!
<MaggieB> and i love spirals too
<kat> i have a curvy line
<Janet> yay!
<MaggieB> you could do this with a spiral too?
<MaggieB> i did draw a line though
<MaggieB> a curby line
<MaggieB> curvy
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> anyone there?
<Owen> yes
<kat> yes, checking out my line
<MaggieB> k
<MaggieB> got too quiet and scared me
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> now if you select your curve and your text, and then go look in the text menu, you'll see "fit text to path" in there
<Janet> (I had to go do it so I knew what the menus and the tools were called. it's one of those things I can do without thinking)
<kat> i did it!!!!!!!!!!!
<Janet> WOO HOO!!!!
<MaggieB> cool
<MaggieB> but didn't fill my line
<kat> mine neither maggie
<MaggieB> can you do something to complete the line?
<Janet> So either you want to make your text bigger, or your line shorter
<MaggieB> can you do that once you are combined?
<Janet> or you can specify that it fill from the middle
<Janet> look at the toolbar directly above your workspace
<MaggieB> i see
<MaggieB> text placement
<Janet> you can adjust a lot of the ways this is fitting to the path, look at that toolbar and all your choices
<Janet> howdy, Evo
<kat> hi evo
<MaggieB> also under or over the line
<evo> :}>
<Janet> that over or under a line thing is handy
<MaggieB> how would one make the font larger?
<MaggieB> once it is on the line?
<MaggieB> hi evo!
evo ain't believing Janet is tackling teaching Corel Draw :{<>
<Janet> go in the arrange menu and pick "break text apart"
<MaggieB> she is really good at it evo
<cak> (believe it! and doing well too)
<evo> I believe :}>
<Janet> LOL she lies
<MaggieB> not available janet
<MaggieB> how about the 2nd tool down?
<kat> mine neither
<Janet> every other question is answered "duhhh let me go look"
<MaggieB> and select the boxes?
<Janet> well, select the text
<MaggieB> with?
<Janet> and when you select the text, the line you fitted it to is selected automatically
<Janet> with your pointer tool
<MaggieB> regular 1st tool one?
<Janet> yep
<MaggieB> and control T
<Owen> Well, Janet, at least you know where to go look.
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> that worked
<MaggieB> click with 1st arrow and ctl T
<kat> that worked
<MaggieB> and up the size
<MaggieB> yep
<MaggieB> cool
<Janet> LOL or I coulda told you to just do the "undo" thang
<MaggieB> neat
<MaggieB> undo?
<evo> lol
<MaggieB> evo you laughing at us????
<Janet> well, to unfit the text so you could mess with it easier
<MaggieB> or with us?
<MaggieB> lol
<MaggieB> oh i see
<MaggieB> back up and start over
<evo> Nawwwwwwwwwww, Maggie, with you!
<MaggieB> but with apply you can see if it fits
<MaggieB> and play
<Janet> Fire up Corel, Evo. This is a hoot.
<MaggieB> a spiral would be the same???
<evo> lol, ok...
<MaggieB> but
<MaggieB> can you get rid of the line?
<Janet> yes!
<MaggieB> so it free floats?
<MaggieB> how?
<Janet> you pretty much always want to get rid of the line or object once you've got your text how you want it
<MaggieB> never mind
<MaggieB> figured it out
<Janet> just use and abuse that object and then toss it aside.<g>
<MaggieB> highlight and hit delete
<MaggieB> so a spiral would be the same way???
<MaggieB> i LLLLOVE spirals!
<kat> how do you hilite maggie
<evo> fired up...
<Janet> yeah. that's where you go up into arrange and break the text from the object and then just select the object and delete it
<Janet> Try it, Maggie
<MaggieB> click on the line with the 1st pointer
<Janet> Evo, we're fitting text to a path tonight.
<evo> k
<MaggieB> i just clicked on the line with the pointer
<kat> cool
<kat> I've always wanted to be able to do that
<MaggieB> hmmmm
<MaggieB> need more text for my spiral!
<MaggieB> lol
<kat> can you do a graduated lettering
<Janet> This is so much easier than it used to be. That toolbar with all the visual controls is so cool.
<kat> like on old postcards and journals
<evo> Will this be archived, Janet?
<Janet> yep, Charlotte has 'em all.
<evo> :}>
<Janet> (to my eternal embarrassment I'm sure)
<MaggieB> what do you mean kat?
<cak> (well, except for a couple of weeks--operator error)
<evo> We forgive yooooou, cak
<Janet> like where the top of the letters is fit to one path and the bottoms is fit to a different one?
<kat> the first letter is very large and then they get smaller for a couple more and then balance out
<kat> yes
<Janet> oh yeah!
<kat> better description
<Janet> you can do it manually probably easiest
<cak> (I'm glad someone does--I always feel so embarrassed about being stoooopid)
<kat> by using font size
<kat> about what cak
<Janet> well, or even just visually, but selecting letter at a time with that shaper tool and tugging them up
evo excels in stooopid
<kat> gotcha
Janet takes stooopid to an art form
<cak> (about just about everything--and I wasn't even brought up Catholic)
<Janet> LOL
<kat> i always say the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask
evo takes offense to Janet claiming stoooped art form prize :{/
<Janet> I agree. Well, that one and the one I ask right after my attention was wandering
<Janet> sorry, Evo, you didn't move fast enough and I snatched the stoopid prize right out from under your nose
<evo> :}/
<cak> lol--no guilty questions, just guilty actions (or usually non-actions)
<kat> art form prize?
Janet polishes her stupid as an art form prize
<cak> I was trying to do the postmark thing with this
<evo> cak... I thought Baptists claimed the prize for guilt trips
<Janet> like around the circle?
evo was raised Baptist, married to a Catholic so is doubly guilty
<Janet> yeah, you can make your own postmarks, like with your name and address and all. this is fun
<cak> I think Catholics and Jewish people are guilt-ridden, Baptist just resign themselves to going to hell
<MaggieB> circle?
<evo> lol, cak
<Janet> yeah, you can fit text around in a circle
<Janet> around the outside of it, or around the inside of it
<MaggieB> just do the same as line but sub a circle?
<Janet> you can even fit it inside out and upside down.
<Janet> yep
<Janet> your letters will usually start at the node the circle begins at, it depends on which direction you drew your circle (which way you stretched the mouse when you drew it)
<Janet> but you can use the controls in that toolbar to make them go however you want them
<Janet> some fonts will go on a path better than others, look better than others. Just experiment and see
<Janet> some will look better if you make them stay straight (that choice that is the ABC sort of leaning out)
<MaggieB> ooo i did a spiral
<MaggieB> cool
<Janet> cool!
<MaggieB> oooo
<MaggieB> and once it is just the text
<Owen> I resigned from the baptist guilt trip.
<MaggieB> you can pull it and make it bigger
<MaggieB> or smaller!
<Janet> are we having fun tonight?
<MaggieB> YES
<Janet> LOL
<MaggieB> arent we EASY?
<MaggieB> lol
<evo> yeppers, Janet, for real
<Owen> Havin' some fun tonite.
<evo> good for you, Owen!
<Janet> I still need you all to take apart some clipart and see how it's put together.
<evo> k
<evo> how?
<MaggieB> yikes
<MaggieB> i dont know what i did
<Janet> get into the clip art CD and pick out something and take it apart
<Janet> LOL what did you do?
<MaggieB> froze and then the spiral ended up weirding out
<MaggieB> its COOL!
<Janet> or rather, what happened?
<Janet> LOL too cool
<MaggieB> somehow the spiral now looks dimensional
<MaggieB> like a funnel
<MaggieB> wish i know what i did
<MaggieB> lol
<Janet> see if you can duplicate it
<evo> Do you have Corel 9 or what, Janet?
<Janet> i have Corel 10 right now.
<Janet> i had corel 9 installed until the big crash
<evo> geez... (evo is always one number behind) :{/
<Janet> (and i may reinstall 9, since I don't know 10 very well yet)
<evo> I like 9
<Janet> wait a little bit and they'll come out with a new version again.
<Janet> i'm always a version behind
<evo> yes, they will
<Janet> oh yeah, I liked 9 the best of any since like 3. corel 3 was a huge different animal than 2
<evo> You can spend a lifetime learning Corel...
<Janet> there's always something else
<Owen> Particularly if they keep changing it.
<evo> unfortunately... I've already spent 2 thirds of my lifetime, soooo
<Janet> and taking apart the clip art just inspires me, how others have put things together
<evo> I need to hurrrrry
<MaggieB> mine is slowing down so much now that it is taking forever to do anything
<cak> I have a *really* stupid question...I've always been able to constrict the ellipse so it draws a circle with the Shift key. It doesn't seem to be working with this version of CD--any suggestions?
<MaggieB> a perfect circle?
<cak> yep
<Janet> it doesn't do that anymore?
<Janet> try control-shift
<evo> I would suggest going up to the size thingy
<cak> well, maybe it doesn't do it with this version (I think 8 is the latest for the Mac)
<Janet> shift looks like it only constrains it one way. control keeps it a circle
<evo> make your ellipse 6" by 6" or whatever size
<Janet> (yeah, I had to go see what it was doing to know)
<Janet> yeah, control keeps it in a circle. looks like shift draws it from the middle
<MaggieB> yes ctrl on mine makes circle
<cak> command-shift works! thanks ladies
<Janet> oh. we haven't played with the guides much yet, let's do guides and layers next week.
<evo> I don't understand layers
<MaggieB> K
<MaggieB> cool
<evo> but want to
<Janet> and do your homework this week. play with your clipart. take it apart. ungroup. etc.
<cak> I'd like to know more about the different views too normal, wire, etc
<kat> well, i did the curve, the spiral and the circle
<kat> i finally kept up
<MaggieB> circle is cool!
<MaggieB> me too kat
<Janet> layers is handy for doing multiple versions of things
<MaggieB> neat!
<Janet> YAY KAT!
<MaggieB> next week?
<MaggieB> cool!
<kat> yay janet
<Janet> play with your software for homework! play with the clipart!
<Janet> next week we're playing with guides and layers.
<Owen> remember needlearts chat tomorrow, 8 central time.
<Janet> oh and yeah, we'll play wiht the views too
<Janet> I always forget, Owen. and I always want to be there.
<kat> class went really fast tonite
<evo> pm, Owen?
<MaggieB> oh try a vertical font on a circle!!
<MaggieB> neat
<MaggieB> yes!
<Owen> Yep, pm. After I get off work.
<Janet> yeah, it did. it's already time to switch to a paint program with Kristi
<kat> a vertical font?
<MaggieB> i guess!
<MaggieB> ok
<MaggieB> which classroom???
<MaggieB> ty ty ty janet
<Janet> #craftclass
<MaggieB> cool class!
<Owen> I don't know if I will be doing it wednesday much longer unless I get some response.
<kat> great class
<evo> neat class, Janet
<cak> what font were you using Maggie?
<MaggieB> we want corel paint for class right?
<Owen> The only person that expressed a preference asked for friday.
<cak> Inquiring minds want to know
<Janet> corel paint will work well.
<MaggieB> aachen vertical
<MaggieB> ty janet
<Janet> Owen, I just have trouble remembering. There's a ton of people who do needle fabric stuff.
<Janet> see y'all over in Kristi's class.
<cak> hmmmm--what makes a vertical font?
<MaggieB> aachen vertical
<evo> going to craft class
<MaggieB> name of font
<cak> rats! I guess we should get going--I'll haurange you about it later
<MaggieB> going to kristis class
<cak> thanks--
