<kat> hi all
<kat> brb
<cak> hi--just doin' a little surfin'
<kat> went for a snack
<Vyx> we got class?
<kat> hi vyx
<cak> I think so
<kat> hi maggie
<Vyx> hiya all
<Vyx> well, I forgot, naturally
<Vyx> LOL, but here I am just in time anyhow.
<cak> At least we get really *big* teasing rights if Janet forgets this week
<kat> that's for sure
<kat> lol
<cak> well, janet just signed on anyway!
<cak> And there she is!
<kat> hi jaent
<kat> janet
<Janet> i remembered!
<kat> yeah!!!!
<Vyx> Yay! Hi Janet
<Janet> how is everybody?
<kat> good and you
<cak> Not bad
<Janet> pretty good
<kat> what's on the agenda for tonite janet
<Janet> well, first catch up, answer any questions from before, then talk about layers
<Vyx> I don't think I've learned anything new in a while actually.
<kat> hi brenda
<Janet> howdy Brenda
<brendab> hey janet
<brendab> lost a newbie
<Janet> well, have you been playing in corel any?
<kat> i am lost vyx so anything would be new to me
<brendab> and was looking for them
Vyx keeps forgetting to be here when Janet is.
raven has an urgent question
<Janet> lost a newbie for real? she just up and disappeared?
<kat> hi raven
<Janet> yes, raven?
<Vyx> Mostly just using it to edit photos and scan stuff.
<brendab> well we were trying to teach her to change rooms
Janet keeps forgetting it's tuesdays
<raven> Okay... I've been happy with Corel version 6 forever now
<brendab> and she left and i dont know where she is
<raven> BUT now I wanted to do some page layout that it won't do :-(
<brendab> lol
<kat> the black hole got her brenda
<brendab> yep
<Janet> yeah, the higher versions have more page layout function for sure
<brendab> sorry to have interrupted class
<Vyx> I can highly recommend version whatever it is that I have. And it was reasonable, only cost me about $20.
<raven> If I upgrade, can I wrap paragraph text around an image space?
<Vyx> I have 8
<Janet> uhhh I've never tried in corel.
<Janet> let me try and see
<raven> I am used to using pagemaker but don't have it on this machine
<Janet> yep, you can
<Janet> you set a wrapping property for the text box
<Janet> and a wrapping property for the object
<raven> version... 9?
<Janet> this is version 10 but I think v 9 did that too
<raven> and it's paragraph text not just artistic text?
<Janet> even though i never did it so i don't guarantee that
<raven> asks Raven who is getting more enthusiastic now
<Janet> yeah, you get a wrap paragraph text list box
<raven> Thank you oh goddess of the pages!!!!!!
<Janet> you can set the space and the style, alignment
<Janet> lol
<Janet> who here has v 9?
<Janet> vyx has 8, owen has 8
<Janet> (8 was a great version)
<Janet> y'all, check and see if you can get a text wrap properties box in that version?
<kat> i have 9
<Vyx> Okay
<Janet> would be under windows then dockers then properties
<cak> You can (in 8)
<Janet> raven, the later versions can import a lot more kinds of text, too.
<Janet> okay!
<Janet> v8 was a really stable version too
<Janet> (unlike the posessed v 7)
<Janet> (I swear, corel 7 was possessed)
<Janet> (and not by friendly spirits)
<raven> LOL! At least I know I can get 8 way cheapo
<kat> i only have file, view, tools and help at the top
<Janet> you'd have window, too, don't you, Kat?
<kat> no windo
<kat> no
<Janet> dang, do you have help?
<Janet> i mean a help menu?
<kat> yes
<Janet> but no window menu
<kat> no
<Janet> dang, i bet it's under "view"
<kat> i will look
<Janet> y'all know why wrapping text around an object would be cool?
<kat> i just found it
<Janet> (i mean, if we're gonna find how to do it, we might as well know why we might want to)
<Janet> under view?
<kat> no, I went in file and opened a new page
<cak> You might want to check your preferences too
<kat> and everything came up on the top
<Janet> you get stuff hiding from you
<kat> yes, my tool bar hides sometimes too
<cak> you have version 7??!
<kat> check preferences for what cak
<kat> no version 9
<cak> I think you should be able to customize what shows in your menus and toolbars
<kat> ty
raven is checking ebay as we speak for version 8 or 9
<Janet> she has version 9.
<cak> so not possessed?
<Vyx> also try half.com, Raven, that's where I found mine.
<Janet> well, kat's copy might be<g>
<cak> lol
<kat> could be, you never know
<raven> good idea... cept I like Ebay cuz most will take PayPal
<Vyx> oh, right.
<Vyx> That's what half.com needs to make it better... everyone accepting paypal. :)
<Janet> okay!
<Janet> so did you all play with combining and manipulating objects and all?
<Janet> did you take apart clipart?
<kat> do i have to answer
<Janet> LOL
<Vyx> lol, did about as much homework as me, eh?
<cak> only as in housework (and not much of that either)
<Janet> nope, you don't have to answer. I can tell by the guilty look on your screen.
<kat> quess so vyx
<cak> I've "customized" clipart before--lots of fun!
<Janet> yeah but at least y'all have shown up for class when i haven't
<Janet> my head has been missing lately
<kat> that is true janet
<raven> chopping up and mutilating clip art=WAY fun
<Vyx> I've captured clip art from ancient programs with screen capture, and then fixed em...
<Janet> owen? you finally got corel installed?
<Owen> Geeze, I just got it working last week.
<kat> hi owen
<Owen> Haven't even figured out what it does.
<Janet> vyx, taking apart corel clipart is different. way more fun
<Owen> Hi, Kat.
<Vyx> Has anyone even kept track of what we've been learning?
<Janet> and a lot easier when it's different objects you want to move around
<cak> Just as logs--and I haven't reviewed them
<Janet> uhhh I was to begin with. then my lesson plans sort of fell apart and I haven't kept track since then
<kat> vyx, I can't even keep track of what I'm not learning
<Janet> LOL
<Vyx> What I'd like is a font stealer, cuz there was a really lovely art deco font in one of my old dos programs.
<Janet> i'd like a font creator that was easy and fast
<Vyx> Yeah, that would do.
<Janet> they are tedious
<Owen> What sort of font was it vyx? True Type?
<Vyx> Owen, no way, not in oooold DOS.
<Owen> Oh, OOOOOOOLD dos, nope.
<Vyx> Just a built into the program font. But if I could print it I could scan it back in...
<Owen> But you might try extracting just the font and scanning it back
<Owen> lol
<Vyx> I think first I'd have to locate the program! LOL!
<Janet> Charlotte, what haven't we learned that we should? other than layers I know.
<cak> duh,
<cak> I don't really know. I have a tendency to be a Problem-based learner
<cak> (and sometimes I'm the problem)
<Janet> think of all we learn, though, creating the problems we do
<Owen> If you got a minute, I need to learn how to wrap text in a circle around a circular picture.
Vyx thinks she's getting plenty use outta Corel with scanning and photo editing.
<Janet> Okay. I bet others might like the fit text to path review
<cak> sounds good to me
<Vyx> yep, I would
raven wonders why it would cost $9 postage for Corel CDs...
<Vyx> cuz they are ripping you off with postage costs?
<Owen> So they can make more profit.
<Janet> (it's part of the profits)
<kat> that sounds like a rip off raven
<Owen> gmta
<Janet> LOL
<raven> yea... there's lots to choose from... I'll find another
<Janet> okay. Owen, first make your circle.
<Janet> then type your text
<Janet> let me know when y'all have got that done
<kat> got it
<Janet> owen? vyx? cak?
<Janet> (I know Raven is shopping)
<Owen> Working on it.
<Janet> okeys
<cak> gotcha
<Owen> OKay
<Owen> Not good but a start
<Vyx> Um, I have a circle, do I open a text box?
<raven> I had to do that a few days ago for faux postmarks... count it as 'homework" LOL!
<cak> (that's what I'm working on too Raven)
<Janet> when you use your selector tool (the top pointer tool) to select both the object and the text, then go under the text menu and pick "fit text to path"
<Janet> then you get a whole host of choices above your pasteboard
<Janet> (it's the fit text to path toolbar!)
<Vyx> oh hey, that was easy!
<Janet> yeah!
<Janet> play with the choices to see how those affect your final outcome
<Janet> how is everybody doing?
<Janet> oh and as long as you're playing, change your font to like a script or a different style text and see how that changes things
<Janet> some fonts just aren't real appropriate for mucking up the baseline
<Vyx> this is way cool, Janet!
<Janet> you can fit text to a spiral
<Janet> or a star
<Janet> or any object
<Vyx> wow, neato.
<Janet> owen, you with us?
<cak> Yay! I got the text to be one the inside of the circle and with the correct orientation (took a few button pushes though--hope I remember)
<Janet> (he must be having a blast over there)
<Janet> woo hoo!!
<raven> have you done "envelope" text yet? That's another fun, marginally useful thing to play at
<Vyx> ??
<Janet> tell 'em how to do it, Raven.
<cak> envelope text?
<raven> Way ta go Owen!
<raven> me? LOL! I have to open the program cuz I don't know it by heart...
<Janet> LOL that's why I asked you to. Let me look.
<cak> well, at least tell us what it is!
<Owen> Lost
<Vyx> in cyberspace, or in corel?
<Janet> oh. that's where you make a shape (an envelope) and put text inside it, then muck with the shape of it to much with the shape of the text
<Janet> like making a fish shape
<cak> Oh yeah! that'll be fun!
<Vyx> Ah. Fitting the text to the shape?
<Janet> owen, you've got corel draw open, right?
<raven> yea! Type a block of greek text into a text box
<raven> paragraph text
<raven> draw a shape nearby... try a circle for starters
<Owen> Yeah, and I am hunting endlessly through choices.
<cak> Ok, what's the difference from just typing text with the text tool and typing it into a text box
<cak> ??
<kat> I don't have greek text is there another name for it
<Janet> owen, did you write your text? and make your circle?
<Janet> kat, just type a bunch of letters
<raven> gobbdey gook
<Janet> asflkjweirovbk weoingfbiox
<Janet> just so you can see what it looks like
<Janet> or you can import a text file too
<raven> if you type it into a text box, it's automagically paragraph text instead of artistic text
<Owen> Lets start at the basics here, draw a circle.
<Janet> okay.
<raven> click on the icon that looks like a circle
<Janet> see the circle tool?
raven better let Janet tell stuff.. Raven is an impatient teacher... LOL!
<Owen> I see the ellipse tool
<Janet> that's it
<Janet> click on that
<Owen> okay, I can fake a circle with that.
<Janet> then click and drag on your paper to make an ellipse
<Owen> did that
<Janet> if you want to constrain it to be a circle, hold down the control key? or the shift key?
<Janet> I forget which
<Janet> okay!
<Owen> off center but a circle sort of.
<Janet> now click on the text tool and type some text
<Owen> Okay.
<Owen> done.
<Janet> now click on the top pointer tool
<Janet> that looks like an arrow
<Janet> and select them both
<Janet> evo!
<evo> :}>
<Owen> right, got it. How do I select both at the same time?
<Janet> got them both selected?
<Owen> Hi evo.
<kat> you have to hold down the shift key owen
<Vyx> shift and select
<Janet> you can do it like you select more than one icon in windows, by dragging a lasso around both
<Owen> Oh, not control.
<Janet> or you can click one, then hold the shift key and click the other
<Owen> That makes the difference, then.
<Janet> (evo, need another worker or demonstrator this weekend?)
<Janet> owen, when you have them both selected, go up under the text menu and pick "fit text to path"
Vyx waves at Evo
<evo> absoLUTELY, Janet!
<Janet> really??
<Janet> yay! I was hoping you would.
evo waves at Vyx :}>
<evo> Yep... come on over, for real.
<kat> hi evo
<Janet> okay. leave my name at the front and I'll be there when? hour before opening?
<evo> Heyyyyy, Kat!
<Owen> I don't get that as an option (its greyed out)
<evo> 9 am Saturday
<Janet> you need both objects selected first, Owen
<Janet> i'll be there, Evo
<Vyx> It should say down at the bottom> 2 objects selected
<Owen> They are.
<kat> hi queen
<TheQueen> Sunny!
<TheQueen> hi kat
<Vyx> hiya Q
<Owen> It says that.
<Janet> and no other objects can be selected, just those two.
<Owen> Hi Queen, I am being the dunce tonite.
<evo> Heyyyy, Queen
<cak> does it matter if it's artistic or paragraph text?
<kat> It did that to me before too
<Janet> for the envelope? it needs to be paragraph text
<TheQueen> if i wasn't being nice this year, i would ask Owen how that is different from any other night, but i'm nice so i won't
<TheQueen> heeeeeeyyyy evo
<Owen> So be nicer.
<Owen> <G>
<kat> I just tried it with paragraph and it didn't work
<Janet> fit text to path has to be artistic text
<cak> the fit to curve kat?
<raven> paragraph works... artistic works different
<raven> try both
<raven> did you hit "apply" kat?
<TheQueen> nicer?
<kat> where is apply
<TheQueen> you're still alive aren't ya owen? THAT is nice
<Owen> Okay, give me ALL the rules, and it works.<G>
<Owen> Is it?
<raven> if you do paragraph in a circle, the edges just fit in the circle. If you put artistic in the circle the text "spheres"
<Owen> Try living my life for a while, and see if you think its nice.
<Janet> Owen, did it work for you yet?
<Owen> Yep, and the text looks like I want, and fits the curve.
<raven> apply is one of the buttons in the envelope pop-up.... at the bottom
<TheQueen> kmart? right there.....uh uh
<Janet> woo hoo!!
<Owen> Now can I do that by showing a circular picture, and putting text around the cuve like that??
<kat> raven, where do i get the envelope pop-up
<Janet> owen, it's easier to draw a "control circle" and using that, then deleting the circle you drew just for the text
<Owen> See, I have a circular knotwork graphic, and I want to put the store name around the graphic.
<raven> when you click on "effects" at the top.. then click on "envelope" the pop-up should appear
<Janet> or there's an interactive tool, mine looks like a series of boxes
<Janet> when you click and hold down on that, you get a choice of tools and the interactive envelope tool looks like a box with a node on each of the four sides
<raven> I don't think I have that in this version
<raven> (which is 7 by the way and not 6 like I said before)
<Janet> i don't think you do in 6, but kat has it I think
<Vyx> Cak, are you logging the stipple class?
<Janet> raven 7 is possessed<g>
<raven> LOL!
<kat> when I click and hold down on what
<raven> it's been okay in this machine but was a nightmare on my old machine
raven passes brownies around to aid in concentration
<kat> ty raven, i think i must need them
<Vyx> oooh
<cak> the one next? yep--should be (if I don't get trapped in Corel documentation)
<Vyx> I'm gonna have to go, just too tired to stay up tonight.
<Janet> except it's really whatever Keribou is teaching
<kat> nite vyx
<Janet> but I'm gonna teach stipple soon.
<Vyx> Ah, the web page says you are teaching stipple.
<Vyx> I wanted to stay for that, but am fading toooo fast.
<Vyx> G'night y'all, see ya tomorrow.
<Janet> oh yikes. we never got to layers. not next week, I'll be in oh Italy next Tuesday night. and Austria the Tuesday after, but the Tuesday after that, LAYERS
<cak> well, you know my email, e me
<kat> nite again vyx
<cak> gotcha--I'll try to do some homework
<Janet> let's go see what Keribou is gonna teach us
<Janet> me too.
<kat> sounds good
<evo> Janet? Is
<cak> I'll work on the envelope text too--sounds like fun
<Janet> Keribou is doing something with templates
<evo> OK to bring stippling into the class :}>
<Janet> envelope text is a blast
<kat> what class
<Janet> okay!
<kat> where is class I should say
<Janet> I don't know, let's go see what it is. in #craftclass
<Janet> more templates with Keribou! yes!!
<Janet> see y'all over ther!
<cak> it's in #craftclass kat
<cak> you going to join us?
<cak> see you there
