<cak> hi

<altogether> hi

<altogether> is there a class here soon

<cak> just hangin' out to see if Janet is gonna do #design tonight

<cak> let me /msg her--

<altogether> i've just got onto mirc so this is new for me

<cak> it's a little disconcerting at first, but tons of fun

<altogether> Hi Janet

<Janet> howdy howdy

<Janet> who is altogether? :)

<altogether> Charmaine Stack

<altogether> Canada eh

<Janet> Hi, Charmaine!

<cak> hiya (she's new to mIRC too!)

<Janet> That's close to where Cheryl Hutcherson lives

<Janet> So what has you all been designing lately?

<Janet> (oh gee, I sound as tired as I am. LOL)

<cak> well, I've been trying to organize the unedited logs some

<altogether> I just made my first coptic stitched book today

<cak> still no good solution

<Janet> oh kewl!!

<cak> I *love* coptic bindings!

<Janet> there is no good solution to those logs<g>

<Janet> (other than MY solution, which was to have CAK do them<g>)

<cak> lol--that's what I was hoping you'd say!

<cak> and my solution was not to do them until I got permission to do them sloppily

<altogether> well until I could use mirc I was happy to have those logs

<Janet> and now you can log your own :)

<cak> good! I was feeling sooooo guilty about how behind I was (only 3 years)

<Janet> I'm so glad you got mirc. Now you can live in chat with us.

<altogether> I can log my own?

<Janet> You can!!

<cak> Yes! one of the true advantages to dedicated IRC programs

<cak> do you want to set it up now?

<altogether> I plan to take in the altered book one tonight - so I would like to record that

<altogether> Yes, please

<cak> do you want to do the honors Janet or shall I?

<cak> (I have a mac, but have used mirc at work)

<Janet> You better. I get confused

<cak> LOL--and I don't??? (poor altogether)

<altogether> I'm game!

<cak> OK, look under File on your menu bar and select Options

<cak> this should bring up a dialog box. Look for IRC in the list

<cak> if there's a + sign by IRC, click it to expand the list

<altogether> got it

<cak> there should be a Logging option, select that

<altogether> okay

<cak> in that dialog box just check what you want to log. I usually log everything (both is the option to select I think)

<cak> hey brenda

<brenda> hey cak

<brenda> hello everyone

<altogether> yes, I see where I can choose Both. Thanks!

<Janet> I just told them we were partying in #design

<brenda> hello altogether

<cak> we're using altogether as a guinea pig for logging in mirc

<altogether> hi there - mIRC newbie

<cak> OK!

<brenda> you are doing great for a newbie

<altogether> so I am going to log this little chat and see what happens

<cak> if you want to log this channel, you'll have to leave and come back (I think)

<altogether> alright, I guess it is logging in the background?

<altogether> like should I see anything different?

<cak> there's a (drat my memory) box you can click on and turn logging on and off too I think

<Janet> you won't see anything different

<Janet> Hey Vicki!

<vicki> hi janet

<cak> somewhere up near the top of the program window???

<vicki> what's design?

<MaggieB> shoot!

<Janet> It's casual chat about design stuff

<Janet> hey Maggie.

<MaggieB> i didnt know there was design!

<MaggieB> shoot

<MaggieB> shoot

<cak> altogether it should generate a file on your hard drive--it'll be a text file, so easily accessed

<brenda> i told you about my book janet?

<Janet> (that's altogether who is learning to log for your class)

<Janet> no, what about your book?

<MaggieB> hi altogether!

<altogether> great, i will look for it when I log off later

<MaggieB> hey all!!

<brenda> Looking Good in Print

<altogether> hi maggieB. Looking forward to your ab class tonight

<brenda> with cd

<Janet> CAK, do the different rooms make different text files?

<Janet> Looking Good in Print is a great design book.

<MaggieB> great, glad to have you

<cak> (vicki--right now design is just discussion on design successes and problems, but Janet also teaches specifics of software sometimes too)

<altogether> Brenda, I have that book on DTP

<cak> they do on my old version of mirc

<Janet> It's one of my favorite DTP books

<vicki> i'll be quiet

<brenda> i havent installed yet

<Janet> No fun in that, Vicki :)

<brenda> cause of the computer problems

<vicki> lol

<cak> it's name #name-of-channel

<cak> naw, this is a discussion

<Janet> I did something new last night.

<cak> cool--what?

<brenda> what?

<MaggieB> hey owen!

<cak> hey owen

<Janet> I will I swear I will get the vacation photos in a real form, but the pharmacist was nagging on me to get them up yesterday, so I did a quick down and dirty java script slide show

<Janet> Owen!

<MaggieB> cool

<cak> where!?!

<Janet> and it worked!

<Owen> Hi

<brenda> i wanna learn how to scan and use the letters all scrambled around sideways to create backgrounds

<MaggieB> what program did you use janet?

<brenda> hey owen

<Janet> http://dm.net/~janet/Ireland2002/slideshow.html

<Janet> I used Dreamweaver, this was a dreamweaver extension

<Janet> then after the script created the code, it was easy to edit

<Owen> Hi Brenda

<Janet> hey Angel

<MaggieB> wow! CASTLES!!

<angel> altogether?

<altogether> yes?

<Janet> I was just telling everybody to go admire my slide show.

<MaggieB> and COWS

<Janet> http://dm.net/~janet/Ireland2002/slideshow.html

<altogether> cool photos Janet

<Janet> cows in the bloomin ROAD

<angel> whi is altogether?

<brenda> wow janet

<brenda> awesome

<Janet> This is Charmaine in Victoria

<altogether> I'm Charmaine from Victoria BC Canada

<altogether> echo LOL

<Janet> (which is close to Vancouver)

<altogether> yes, 1.5 hours on ferry

<brenda> hello charmaine

<Janet> and has way cool fireworks

<angel> ok...welcome!

<altogether> hello brenda

<brenda> glad you found us

<altogether> thank you - my first time - be gentle with me

<vicki> janet???

<MaggieB> is this your ROOM?

<brenda> will do

<Janet> That one with the sitting room also? yep, it was an awesome hotel room

<Janet> Red!

<Janet> check out my slideshow, new dreamweaver extension experiment

<Janet> http://dm.net/~janet/Ireland2002/slideshow.html

<vicki> slide show is not coming up for me,pictures start to come up then dissapear

<Janet> well, dang, why are they disappearing?

<Janet> are you using opera?

<brenda> mine are too

<brenda> no

<Janet> I didn't test it in opera

<brenda> i lost opera

<Janet> that java may croak in opera

<brenda> i am using IE

<vicki> what's opera?

<brenda> a browser

<Janet> or they may be moving to the next photo in the show and the disappearing is the next one loading?

<vicki> and don't tell me classic music plays

<brenda> yes

<Janet> LOL

<angel> very nice Janet..I love it..!

<MaggieB> where was that gorgeous window view janet??

<vicki> oh, i have explorer

<brenda> before they finish loading the next is coming

<Janet> well, ignore it for a while then they'll all be loaded

<angel> me exploer..

<Janet> yeah, then ignore it until it cycles through, then they'll all be in cache and that may solve it

<Janet> the window view was at Gregan's Castle

<angel> beautiful!

<Janet> in the Burren area just south of Galway

<Owen> TAkes forever for each pic to load, then they dissappear in pieces.

<MaggieB> did you load this as raw html or use a program janet?

<vicki> ok, will it keep loading while it's minimized??

<Janet> in fact the window view you can see Galway Bay and then Galway beyond the water

<Janet> it should

<MaggieB> hey more farm animals!

<MaggieB> sheep this tiem

<MaggieB> time!

<MaggieB> lol

<Janet> I used a Dreamweaver script to create it, then edited the code after the script finished

<Janet> because i wanted all my sheep photos together

<MaggieB> great job on the pics janet

<cak> I'm gonna have to look at it later--I'm getting all kinds of lag while it's loading

[connection lost for a bit here]

<Janet> with my family now, the only real way to share my photos is on a web page

<vicki> Dr Sloan????

<Janet> Red, this was a Dreamweaver exchange

<cak> I'm gonna have to look at it later--I'm getting all kinds of lag while it's loading

<Owen> netscape

<Janet> You can look at the thumbnails and the first 20 on a regular type site at http://dm.net/~janet/Ireland2002/

<cak> thanks!

<Janet> (all the thumbs are there, but only the first 20 links will work, i haven't written the other 100+ pages)

<Redstick> From Fireworks?

<Janet> Yep

<cak> lol--and why not?? you have *all* this extra time, right?

<Janet> I'm Dreamweaver/Fireworks dependent now

<Janet> LOL

<MaggieB> is that all?

<MaggieB> links, links, and more links

<MaggieB> can drive you dizzy!

<Owen> I think the reload rate is too high for my connection speed.

<Redstick> Sounds about right :)

<MaggieB> if i dont do it systematically i forget something!

<Janet> Owen, I think you've hit it and I need to slow down the refresh rate

<Janet> and put alt tags on each, so that they'll be captioned

<Janet> (then there's just one page to write, right?)

<cak> I'd love to have you do a JaveScript series sometime--I'm so shaky on all but the basics

<Janet> That's why I haven't.<g> All I know are the very basics

<cak> lol

<Janet> I'm mainly skilled at stealing and modifying them

<Janet> and there's not much of a class in "steal what you like, then change it to suit ya"

<cak> hey! that's a *very* valuable skill

<Janet> That's how I learned html, really.

<MaggieB> hey janet is that snow in the one pic?

<Janet> looking at source code of pages I wanted mine to look like

<Janet> YES!!!

<Janet> I didn't know it snowed in Ireland

<Janet> it does

<MaggieB> well of course it does

<brenda> lol

<MaggieB> not florida you know

<MaggieB> lol

<MaggieB> you think the leprachauns take it away or something???

<Janet> woke up the second morning, looked out onto that marvelously beautiful landscape and said "hey. what's that white shit out there?"

<Janet> well, yeah.

<brenda> lol

<Janet> the leprachauns were sleeping on the job

<cak> lol--texans have trouble recognizing snow?

<MaggieB> white shit?

<Janet> whut's snow?

<altogether> did you get to kiss the Blarney Stone?

<MaggieB> gosh texans dont know snow?

<brenda> janet just gets ice

<Janet> No, I still haven't gone to see the Blarney stone

<MaggieB> snow doesnt work well in your scotch janet

<Janet> yeah. we do get ice storms. But very rarely snow

<altogether> so you'll have to go back!

<MaggieB> have to find an icicle

<Janet> I will!!

<Janet> Next time I want to go to Donegal too

<cak> gives you a reason to return (like one needs a reason)

<MaggieB> so where DID you find an internet pub janet?

<Janet> I think I may have hit my height of spoiledness on this trip, too

<MaggieB> the height of spoiledness?

<Janet> it was off Grafton Street in Dublin

<MaggieB> do spill oh janet

<MaggieB> lol

<MaggieB> you have gotten pampered much in the past

<Janet> yeah. The plan was to turn in the rent car in Galway and take either the train or the bus to Dublin

<MaggieB> how dare did you exceed the past?

<Janet> takes about four hours by train or bus (is like 180 miles)

<Janet> took me two days to drive it last time I did it

<MaggieB> yes?

<Janet> So I go to take back the car at the Galway airport

<MaggieB> 2 days???

<Janet> and of course have to go to the bathroom

<MaggieB> of course

<Janet> and folks are lining up to FLY to dublin (takes 30 minutes)

<MaggieB> no!

<Janet> and I go back outside to the pharmacist and say "I wanna fly, bus sounds ickypoo now"

<MaggieB> janet!

<Janet> and he sorta groaned

<brenda> lol

<Janet> but we flew

<MaggieB> oh janet he should know you by now

<MaggieB> after what, 20+ years

<MaggieB> lol

<Janet> 25 years married this June

<MaggieB> he should have known better!

<Janet> engaged for three years before then.

<MaggieB> to let you alone....

<MaggieB> and still he is silly enough to leave you alone....

<MaggieB> to get in trouble

<Janet> so yeah, after 28 years, he shoulda knowed better than to let me walk into an airport before getting on a 4 hour bus trip

<MaggieB> lol

<altogether> the photo of the area with the gazebo is really lovely

<MaggieB> i should think

<Janet> that's St. Stephen's Green, right in the middle of Dublin

<Janet> and what totally charmed me was that fellow just sitting there feeding his lunch to the pigeons and ducks

<Janet> he was surrounded

<altogether> the closest I've gotten to Ireland is reading Maeve Binchy books (sigh)

<Janet> you gotta go!!

<MaggieB> oh i love maeve binchy's books

<Janet> that's why I went the first time, I'd just finished a Binchy book

<MaggieB> so how many times HAVE you gone janet?

<altogether> tee hee - she should get a royalty from the Irish tourism board

<Janet> Read Scarlet Feather on the way over there this time.

<Janet> Just twice to Ireland

<MaggieB> and already she is looking to go back

<Janet> she really should!!

<Janet> well, it's like Paris. Once you go once, you KNOW you'll be back.

<Janet> sooner or later, you'll be back.

<MaggieB> shell seakers

<MaggieB> is that so?

<Janet> It is

<MaggieB> hmmmm

<MaggieB> i feel that way about the mayan riviera

<Redstick> Janet...how many in the slideshow?

<Janet> What amazes me is that the people are so nice, if I lived somewhere with that many tourists and tour buses, I swear I couldn't be so welcoming

<Janet> I think 144?

<Janet> about that

<MaggieB> lots of tourists huh?

<Janet> maybe just 139

<MaggieB> only?

<MaggieB> lol

<Owen> So now it is working okay, and the pics are great, as usual.

<MaggieB> must be cached

<Redstick> well...I'm on 117 downloading

<Janet> It's a totally beautiful country

<MaggieB> pics are wonderful

<MaggieB> red you gotta get cable

<altogether> I'll sign off now and go check to make sure I have the log working (thanks cak) then see MaggieB in a few in her classroom.

Redstick doesn't ever really care to travel to conventions...

<vicki> i'm still only getting the top of pics, briefly at that

<MaggieB> see you then altogether

<Janet> Oh yes! just 27 minutes to AB class!

<altogether> thanks all!

<cak> YaY! See you in a few altogether

<Redstick> They don't HAVE cable out here, MaggieB

<MaggieB> no huh?

<MaggieB> it is my one splurge

<MaggieB> downgraded the tv cable to get my part

<MaggieB> which is the internet end

<vicki> Red's lucky to have electricity!!!!!

<MaggieB> i love it

<MaggieB> lol

<cak> We may be getting cable internet sometime later this year--I'm soooo happy

<Janet> LOL

<MaggieB> red you are that far in the sticks?

<cak> lol

<Owen> I don't get the larger pictures, I guess

Redstick is about to go WebTv with Direct satellite

<Redstick> actually, Maggie....yes

<MaggieB> wow

<Owen> But I did get the cows backsides.

<MaggieB> lol

Redstick lives 3/4 mile past the end of a dead end road

<angel> and cute cows they are!lol

<MaggieB> past???

<Redstick> yep

<MaggieB> what IN the PASTURE?

<Janet> goodness. The pharmacist just called, the lake that was threatening to go over the road when I drove home an hour ago has now closed the road. He was calling to say he was going to be later than usual because they were turning people around on the highway

<Redstick> in the woods

<MaggieB> wow

<cak> yikes!

<MaggieB> in the woods?

<Owen> From that vantage, Icouldn't say, but then I am not an afficionado of cows, front OR back.

<MaggieB> that is cool

<Redstick> Is there an alternate route, Janet?

<Janet> Those damned cows. They stood in the road a good 10 minutes, got traffic nice and backed up behind me. The backsides of them were them walking into someone's front yard

<MaggieB> he have to go around a back way or something?

Redstick realy doesn't like Janet getting drowneded, but really DOESN'T want the rain to head this way, either

<Janet> yeah, but they have to get the people turned around and back onto the highway to go down to the next exit

<MaggieB> its raining that badly?

<MaggieB> wow

<Janet> I think about five inches today

MaggieB thinks you can keep it janet

<cak> considering your recent bout with water, who could blame you Red?

<Janet> we've had flash flood warnings all day and tornado warnings now

<Redstick> ack! I went from pic 117 to pic 024

<MaggieB> ack!

<Janet> LOL how did you do that??

<vicki> i don't see any numbers

<Janet> and the pool is coming into my living room now I think

<Redstick> not sure...in the 30s now

<vicki> oooohhhhh nnnnnooooo

<Redstick> shows the file loading vicki..

<vicki> mine doesnt

<Redstick> Well, I gotta go out to the studio puter...MrRed wants this one..see ya inna few

<cak> Janet? What would be involved in settng up a ftp site for the log files?

<cak> (I think it was Vyx asking for this?)

<Janet> ohhhhh

<brenda> cak

<brenda> i like it the way it is now

<cak> it would be in addition to the html stuff

<brenda> k

<Janet> I think we can just write a different page to make it look that way?

<Janet> set up a listing with zips or something?

<cak> lol

<cak> um, how about a compression scheme that non-windows people can use?

<brenda> cak i may be getting a mac

<Janet> cak, you can just stuff it

Janet snorts

<cak> LOL

<angel> brb

<cak> I think I can generate sea

<cak> s

<Owen> Not nice, Janet.

<Janet> (stuff it being the Mac sceme of choice)

<Owen> Meean, even.

<Janet> LOL

<cak> (yay brenda--I know we all have our biases and mine is toward the mac)

<Janet> I can do sits

<Owen> Stuffit is okay,

<Owen> but it doesn't give all teh control I like over the unzipping.

<Janet> okay, so how would we set up an ftp site for log downloads?

<cak> let me take a look at the download site for software at siu--just a sec

<Janet> would it work to just put them into a directory minus an html file and give the directory name as the link?

<Janet> except when someone clicked on whatever text file even in a directory list like that, it would still load up in their browser

<Janet> I am not seeing the benefit of it

<cak> I know it can be done, 'cause that's how the software downloads are set up for us (looks like a gopher page actually)

<cak> it downloads the file to your hard drive without opening it

<cak> if you're doing wholesale downloading, it'd be handy--

<Owen> You would probably have to use an ftp file server for that

<Janet> Okay, so this becomes an Andy question

<cak> welcome back Redstick

<brenda> wb red

Redstick thinks she made it back

<Janet> You did make it back

<Redstick> It's hard to tell on Xp

<Janet> I still really like XP

<cak> Yeah, this looks like an Andy question for sure.

<Janet> talked to the queen yesterday, she was hating XP big time. then she took back her new computer, it was a bum one

<cak> *that* sure doesn't help

<Janet> I bet she likes XP better already

<Redstick> I think the puter's ok...I just need a puter desk

<Redstick> my neck's getting a knot in it :(

<Janet> you laying on the floor with the computer?

<Redstick> naw...jury rigged desk

<Janet> ah okay

<Janet> (I've done chatting laying down and it ain't easy)

<Redstick> and there's nowhere for the mouse

<cak> not helpful

<Redstick> nope

<cak> (you need a trackball)

<Redstick> I wish they made touchpads in keyboards

<Janet> you like touchpads?

<Redstick> Got used to it with the laptop

<Janet> (I got a mouse for the laptop never could get the hang of the touchpad)

<Redstick> I loved it

<cak> I like 'em better than a mouse--easier on my hands

<Redstick> here. too and everything right at yer fingers

<Owen> I like my mouse

<Janet> me too

<Owen> Easy to use, and precise.

Redstick needs a gelpad wrist support with a built in touchpad...

<brenda> i think i would love touchpad

<Redstick> wonder if they make such an animal?

<cak> I think that Red and I are in the minority, but different strokes...

<Owen> Haven't seen one, but you could use a marble, or a trackball, with a rest like that.

<cak> (add brenda to the wierdo list too then)

<Owen> Marble is easier on you.

<brenda> ty

<Janet> I didn't like trackballs either

<cak> (wotta honor, eh?)

<Redstick> haven't seen a marble

<cak> neither have I

<Redstick> but it seems to me I DID see a portable touchpad

Redstick will have to go browsing dad web

<Redstick> da web

<Owen> Marble puts the ball in the center of the unit. You move it with your fingertips,

<Owen> Buttons on either side.

<cak> I have an older one for the desktop computer==works great. especially since DR doesn't like it and leaves it alone

<cak> I've seen a stick in the middle of the keyboard--laptop, it sucked big time

<Owen> Susan has a laptop like that, cak.

<Owen> She ended up getting a mouse to use with it.

<cak> maybe I just didn't use it long enough, but it was hard on my wrists

<Owen> The stick is just terrible.

<Owen> brb got to finish making the tea.

<cak> I'd agree with that

<Janet> and my new one has a nice touchpad but I just like mice

<Janet> It's practically time for AB class. YAY!

<vicki> i thought you were a cat person, janet

<cak> lol--but, but, I like design toooooo----

<Janet> I gotta be better remembering, I love design hours

<cak> lol--maybe she competes with chico and april for mice

<Janet> those cats

<cak> I didn't mean to twist your arm, but I love the discussions

<Janet> I love these.

<cak> Has anyone used a graphics tablet?

<Janet> okay. off to #craftclass

<Janet> no but I want one of those bad

<Redstick> I found one!

<Redstick> Keyboard with a touchpad :)

<cak> Yay!

<Janet> yay!

<cak> that you can use now???

<Redstick> Well, i gotta buy it

<cak> I don't do enough drawing to merit one, but I'm gonna get one anyway I think

<cak> sigh--well, at least it's out there for you

<Janet> yeah, I think tomorrow or soon I'm gonna get a tablet. I really like having a USB port on the front of the computer

<cak> I guess we should adjourn to #craftclass??

<cak> cool

<cak> what are you looking at Janet

<Janet> yep. Maggie is fixing to start I bet

<Janet> wacom one I bet

<cak> yeah--I'm trying to justify the 4x6, but I'm not sure I can

<cak> (Intuos)

<Janet> I really want that mid size one

<cak> lol--you and me. But you at least have a need for one

<Janet> sorta kinda. I don't really, but I'd sure have fun with it

<cak> I'd just get it because it comes with cooloer hardware and software.

<brenda> going to close this one

<Janet> LOL yeah

<cak> I tell myself that once I got it, I'd find things that are perfect for the tablet

<cak> (complete rationalization)

<cak> Oooo, lookslike Maggie's asking for trouble in the other room. I guess I'd better get over there and comply

<Janet> it would be like the evo templates. I swore I didn't need them. Until I got them.
