<die_cut_de> ok so am I in the right room now
<Janet> So I know I've sort of given this class before, seems like there's always new folks and new questions, though. Class page is at http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/scannertricks/class.html
<Janet> You are, Debbie! with the new store :)
<die_cut_de> yeah
<beanjean1> your store is open in the mall debbie?
<die_cut_de> yeah
<Janet> SO CLASS PAGE IS AT http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/scannertricks/class.html
<Janet> AND DEBBIE'S STORE IS FRESHLY OPEN!
<Janet> YOU CAN PRACTICALLY SMELL THE FRESH PAINT ON IT :)
<cak> Congrats debbie!
<Rusty> lol
<keribou> yuck I hate new paint smell!
<die_cut_de> thank you, thank you, thank you very much
<beanjean1> that's GREAT debbie, congrats!!!
<Janet> THEN HOLD YOUR NOSE<G> AND JUST ADMIRE THE COOL DIE CUTS
<keribou> what is the url?
<Rusty> just don't touch the paint lol
<Janet> SOMEONE, NOT MENTIONING ANY NAMES, HAD TO SEE HOW MUCH "ONE OF EVERYTHING" WAS
<Janet> http://crafts.dm.net/mall/diecutsbydebbie.html
<cak> lol (like we don't know)
<Janet> LOL
<beanjean1> hi april
<Janet> SO I TALKED DEBBIE INTO HOLDING A "GIMME ONE OF EVERYTHING" GRAND OPENING SPECIAL :)
<cak> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/scannertricks/class.html is the class page for tonight
<April> hi jeanie..how are ya>?
<beanjean1> fine, thanks, april and you?
<Janet> SO HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE SCANNERS AND/OR DIGITAL CAMERAS?
<cak> (I just love that Janet is so persuasive)
<die_cut_de> me me
<April> iam hanging...lol
<kat> me / both
beanjean1 raises her hand
<stamprat> me too
<MomCat> me
<beanjean1> lol april
<cak> I've got 2 scanners and 1 digital camera
<brenda> me
<cak> (one scanner's not hooked up though)
<April> by a thread...lol
<Janet> OKAY! WELL, THE FIRST BIT OF CLASS IS MAINLY SCANNER-RELATED THEN THE LAST 2/3 IS FOR BOTH
<vicki> me too, both
<Rusty> um me
<Janet> GEE, I HAVE ONE SCANNER AND THREE DIGITAL CAMERAS<G>
<April> wish i had both..does that count?lol
<Janet> COUNTS FOR ME :)
<Rusty> the box that the camera is in is real pretty
<Janet> ANYWAY, SEEMS LIKE IT WAS A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THAT I NOTICED ON THE STAMPSMITH LIST, PEOPLE WERE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING THEIR SCANS THE SIZE THEY WANTED THEM
<Janet> AND EVERYBODY SEEMS TO COMPLAIN THAT THEIR SCANS DON'T LOOK LIKE THEIR ORIGINALS
<brenda> mine dont
<Janet> DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR TO ANY OF YOU?
<vicki> yes
<kat> yes
<beanjean1> that's been a topic of conversation around here for SURE
<Janet> I THOUGHT SO :)
<Janet> (WHUR'S EVO?)
<vicki> lets go get her
<Janet> LOL
<vicki> call her up
<die_cut_de> she just sent me an email
<Janet> ANYWAYS, LET'S TALK ABOUT SIZE FIRST...
<Janet> I CAN'T REALLY TELL YOU HOW TO DO THIS WITH YOUR PARTICULAR SCANNER SOFTWARE, EVERYONE'S IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT...
<cak> (size matters)
<vicki> yay!!!
<Janet> ANDY! JUST IN TIME, JUST STARTED.
<vicki> wb stubby!
<stubby> thanks
<Janet> LOL YEAH, SIZE MATTERS.
<AmyLPR> hi
<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/scannertricks/class.html IS THE EXAMPLE PAGE
<Janet> AND ONE QUESTION ALWAYS ASKED (AND AN ANSWER YOU NEED TO KNOW) IS HOW BIG OR SMALL TO SCAN YOUR STUFF AT
<Janet> AND THE ANSWER IS....
<Janet> (DRUM ROLL HERE)
<Janet> ...
<Janet> IT DEPENDS.
<Janet> (I CRACK MYSELF UP)
<cak> lol--gee, thanks!
<Rusty> lol
<AmyLPR> oh :P
<Rusty> you funny
<brenda> lol
<Janet> IF YOU ARE WANTING TO PRINT OUT WHAT YOU SCAN, THEN YOU WANT TO SET YOUR SCANNERS DPI (DOTS PER INCH) THE SAME AS YOUR PRINTER'S
<AmyLPR> it's confirmed, Janet is cracked lol
<brenda> which is???????
<Janet> MOST OF OUR PRINTERS ARE EITHER 300 DPI OR 600 DPI (MY NEW ONE IS 1200 DPI, NEENER)
<brenda> k
<vicki> how do i know what printer is set for?
<beanjean1> oh janet
<beanjean1> lucky you!
<Janet> AND THIS SETTING IS IN YOUR SCANNER SOFTWARE SOMEWHERE. IT MAY BE SOMEWHERE OBVIOUS LIKE ON THE PAGE WITH THE PREVIEW AND SCAN BUTTONS...
<Janet> OR IT MAY BE HIDDEN (SOMEWHAT) UNDER AN OPTIONS MENU CHOICE
Rusty head is spinning
<brenda> k
<Janet> OR I KNOW MY SCANNER DRIVER IT IS UNDER "ADJUST SCAN QUALITY"
<brenda> so we get to play with clicking to find this out
<Janet> YES, CLICK AROUND YOUR SCANNER SOFTWARE TO FIND WHERE TO CHANGE YOUR DPI SETTING
<Janet> YOU MIGHT EVEN HAVE TO (SHUDDER) READ THE HELP FILE
<Janet> BUT IT IS IN THERE AND YOU CAN FIND IT.
<Janet> BY SCANNING THE SAME DPI AS YOUR PRINTER (LOOK UP THE PRINTER DPI EITHER ON THE PRINTER, OR IN THE MANUAL OR LOOK ON THE MANUFACTURER'S WEBSITE IN THE ABOUT PAGE ABOUT YOUR PRINTER)
<Janet> ...
<Janet> YOU GET YOUR ABSOLUTE BEST QUALITY PRINT OUT OF YOUR PRINTER AND!
<Janet> AND!
<Janet> THE PICTURE DOESN'T RUN OFF THE SIDES OF THE PAPER
<Janet> (THAT IS ALWAYS SO IRRITATING)
<Janet> EVERYBODY WITH ME SO FAR?
<MomCat> yes
<kat> yes
<AmyLPR> yup
<Janet> NOW IF YOU'RE SCANNING SOMETHING FOR A WEB PAGE?
<Janet> MOST PEOPLE'S MONITORS ARE SET AT (AROUND) 72 DPI
<Janet> OF COURSE DIFFERENT MONITOR SETTINGS MAKE THIS DIFFERENT, BUT AS A GENERAL RULE, IF YOU HAVE A 72 DPI SCAN, IT WILL BE ABOUT LIFE-SIZE ON THE MONITOR SCREEN
<Janet> MAKE SENSE?
<kat> Janet, would this be the resolution
<Janet> (THIS IS WHY SOME SCANS ARE JUST HUGE, AND SOME ARE TINY, THEY'VE BEEN SCANNED AT DIFFERENT DPI SETTINGS)
<Janet> WELL, SORTA KINDA, KAT. LIKE I HAVE MINE SET AT 1280 PIXELS ACROSS MY SCREEN, SO IF I DIVIDED 1280 BY 17 I'D GET WHAT MY ACTUAL DPI SETTING IS
<Janet> I'M TOO LAZY, SO I'LL JUST SAY IT'S 72 LIKE MOST OTHER FOLKS' MONITORS
<Rusty> oh great math!!
<vicki> whut's a pixel???
<Janet> JANETS DON'T DO MATH. JANETS JUST SAY 72 DPI FOR WEB PAGES AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT
<Rusty> yah
<Janet> OR 75 DPI
<Janet> I ACTUALLY DO IT AT 75 DPI BECAUSE I SCAN AT 150, PLAY WITH MY SCAN, THEN REDUCE IT IN HALF AND CALL IT DONE
<Janet> 50 PERCENT IS AS MUCH MATH AS I EVER WANT TO DO
<Janet> PERIOD AMEN
<April> cool
<beanjean1> hey I've been doing that and it really works
<Janet> AND 150 DPI IS ONE OF MY STANDARD SCANNER SETTINGS. USUALLY YOU'LL HAVE A CHOICE OF 72 OR 75, MAYBE 100, 150, 300, 400, 600 ETC
<Janet> THEY REALLY DO END UP ABOUT LIFE SIZE ON THE WEB THIS WAY
<die_cut_de> i scan in with my imaging program...save to my document...the use Kodak Picture Easy to size and save to disk....
<cak> What if you have something you'd like a close-up of (like something detailed or tiny)?
<die_cut_de> and so far no problems
<Janet> WITH DIGITAL PHOTOS IT'S NOT QUITE AS STRAIGHT FORWARD, YOU TAKES YOUR PHOTO THEN YOU HAVE TO THINK "THAT CARD IS 5" TALL SO 5 X 75 IS HOW TALL I WANT TO SIZE IT"
<MomCat> Janet, can you explain what a pixel is, please?
<Janet> THEN SCAN IT AT A HIGHER DPI AND CROP IN CLOSE TO WHAT YOU WANT ENLARGED
<die_cut_de> its the dots of space on the computer i think
<Janet> AND OKAY... PIXEL...
<Janet> YEAH, IT'S ALL THE DOTS THAT MAKE UP THE PICTURE.
<vicki> how is that different than dpi??
<Janet> TVS ARE DONE IN LINES, I DON'T KNOW WHY, BUT COMPUTER MONITORS ARE DONE IN DOTS. AND THE DOTS ARE CALLED PIXELS
<Janet> DOTS PER INCH AND PIXELS ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE SAME FOR ME :)
<Rusty> kinda like willie wonka and the chocolate factory
<Rusty> mike and the tv
<Janet> PIXELS PER INCH. DOTS PER INCH IS MORE PRINTER I THINK AND PIXELS PER INCH MORE MONITOR, BUT IT'S ALL THE SAME TO ME
<Janet> I HAVE FINITE BRAIN CELLS<G>
<Janet> SO IS EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDING SO FAR?
<MomCat> Yes
<brenda> yep
<cak> basically the smallest unit you can use to make a picture (or text or...). So monitors do the Seurat thing--pointillistism?
<vicki> a little
<kat> yes
<Susan> yes
<stubby> some
<vicki> we may have to do this again, lol
<Janet> YEAH! THEY DO EXACTLY, CAK.
<MomCat> so do printers
<Janet> (AND I LOVE SEURAT, THE BATHERS. SIGH)
<Janet> I THINK I NEED TO GO VISIT THAT PAINTING AGAIN.
<Janet> BUT I DIGRESS (TRAVEL WILL DO THAT TO ME)
<MomCat> Is it in the Lourvre?
<MomCat> oops, too many r's
<Janet> BASICALLY, IF YOU'RE PRINTING (NOPE, AT ORSEY I'M THINKING)
<kat> we knew what you meant mc
<Janet> SCAN AT THE SAME DPI AS YOUR PRINTER
<Janet> FOR WEB PAGES, FINISH AT 75 DPI
<Janet> I PERSONALLY LIKE TO SCAN AT 150 DPI, ENHANCE MY SCAN TO MAKE IT TRUER COLOR, THEN CUT IT IN HALF (RESIZE TO 50 PERCENT) AND CALL IT DONE
<Janet> THAT'S YOUR RECAP ON SIZE.
<Janet> NOBODY'S CONFUSED YET?
<cak> no (I think)
<MomCat> I have a question about scanning photos
<Janet> (I CAN TAKE CARE OF THAT WITH THIS NEXT PART. HEH HEH)
<Janet> YES?
<MomCat> I found that they scanned dark and indistinct on the screen
<MomCat> but when I printed on photo paper they looked more like the original
<Janet> I CAN HELP YOU WITH THAT, CALL THE NEXT SECTION OF CLASS "YOUR TRUE COLORS"
<MomCat> if I played with the colors so it looked good on screen it printed "faded"
<Janet> THAT'S PARTLY YOUR MONITOR SETTING, DIANE, IF YOU'RE GETTING THAT BIG A DIFFERENCE IN WHAT YOU'RE SEEING AND WHAT YOU'RE PRINTING
<MomCat> so adjust the brightness and contrast on the monitor
<MomCat> not the file?
<Janet> IN MOST GOOD GRAPHICS PROGRAMS, YOU'VE GOT A FUNCTION ON CALIBRATING YOUR MONITOR.
<Janet> YES! IF IT'S PRINTING GOOD, THEN YOU NEED TO ADJUST YOUR MONITOR
<kat> what if it looks good on the screen but prints with too much red
<Janet> BUT IF YOUR SCAN IS LOOKING GRAY AND SORT OF FLAT?
<Janet> THEN YOU STILL NEED TO ADJUST YOUR MONITOR, KAT. WHAT YOU SEE SHOULD BE CLOSE TO WHAT YOU PRINT.
<kat> ty
<Janet> IF YOU'RE NOT SEEING WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE PRINTING, WELL, YOU NEED TO SEE IT AS IT'S GOING TO PRINT SO YOU KNOW HOW TO ADJUST IT
<Janet> THE CLASS PAGE IS MOSTLY ABOUT "YOUR TRUE COLORS"
<Janet> YOUR CONCEPT IS THIS...
<kat> so if it comes out red I should adjust the monitor to show that on the screen
<Janet> YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE YOUR MONITOR SET TO JUST SEE 256 COLORS, BUT THAT'S ABOUT HOW MANY COLORS YOU CAN DISTINGUISH, SO TO SIMPLIFY THIS IN OUR HEADS, LET'S JUST SAY WE HAVE 256 COLORS TO WORK WITH, OKAY?
<MomCat> Kat, are you talking computer graphics or scanned images?
<kat> scanned
<Janet> YEP, KAT, PRINT SOMETHING AND THEN WORK WITH YOUR MONITOR SO WHAT YOU SEE LOOKS LIKE WHAT YOU PRINTED
<Janet> OKAY, WITH ME ON THE 256 COLOR CONCEPT?
<kat> yes
<cak> yep
<MomCat> yes
<vickiconfu> ok
<Susan> yes
<Janet> THAT'S NOT PRECISELY TRUE, BUT RATHER THAN BOG DOWN INTO BEING PRECISE, LET'S JUST TAKE THAT AS "FACT"
<Janet> NOW YOUR SCANNER IS GOING TO SCAN STUFF IN MILLIONS OF COLORS...
<Janet> AND SO A GOOD SCAN WITH LOTS OF COLORS IS GOING TO LOOK SORT OF GRAY AND FADED
<Janet> BECAUSE YOU HAVE LOTS OF EXTRA COLORS IN THE WHITE END AND BLACK END OF THE RANGE
<Janet> IF YOU CAN VISUALIZE ALL THE COLORS IN YOUR SCAN LIKE IN A CHART, IT WILL LOOK LIKE A BELL CURVE, SORT OF...
<Janet> AND IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF TRAILING SMALL AMOUNTS OF COLORS ON THE ENDS OF THE BELL CURVE...
<Janet> (AND MOSTLY YOU WILL IF YOUR SCANNER IS DOING A GOOD JOB)...
<Janet> THE SCAN LOOKS GRAYED OUT. FADED. THE COLORS DON'T POP AT YOU, AND DON'T LOOK AS TRUE AS THEY DO IN REAL LIFE
<Janet> SOOOOOO....
<die_cut_de> ladies...I must go...have to get up at 4:00 am to go to work...and need my energy sleep...
<kat> nite debbie
<Janet> WE CAN ADJUST FOR THIS BY TRIMMING THOSE TRAILING ENDS OFF, GET OUR 256 VISIBLE COLORS IN THE MID RANGE WHERE THEY'LL DO US THE MOST GOOD
<stubby> bye debbie
<cak> night debbie
<die_cut_de> see y'all later...thanks Janet...
<beanjean1> nite deb
<Janet> AM I MAKING ANY SENSE?
<Janet> SEE YA, DEBBIE
<kat> yes
<cak> yep (course I've had sensitometry which is related)
<Janet> I DON'T KNOW WHAT GRAPHIC SOFTWARE YOU ALL ARE USING, AND SOME WON'T HAVE THIS OPTION FOR YOU (PICTURE PERFECT i DON'T THINK DOES, BUT PHOTOSHOP LE DOES AND ADOBE ELEMENTS? DOES)...
<Janet> CAK, IS THERE A BETTER WAY TO EXPLAIN IT?
<Lory> elements does
<cak> I'm not sure...
<Janet> I'VE FOUND IT IN ADOBE ELEMENTS
<Janet> AND IN MICROGRAFIX PICTURE PUBLISHER
<Janet> AND PHOTO SHOP AND COREL'S PHOTO PAINT.
<cak> Is it fair to say that when you only have 256 colors showing, lots of colors are going to "drop out", so won't look so intense?
<Janet> EVERYBODY CALLS THIS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
<Janet> YEAH! THAT MAKES SENSE TO ME.
<Janet> AND YOU WANT TO PICK THE MOST INTENSE ONES
<Janet> BECAUSE YOUR EYES DO. YOUR EYES/BRAIN FILTER OUT THE DROPPING OFF ONES
<beanjean1> Is this in Corel Photo house?
<Janet> IN REAL LIFE, THE EYES DO. SO WE WANT TO DO IT MECHANICALLY WITH A SCAN OR A PHOTO SO IT MATCHES WHAT YOUR BRAIN THINKS YOUR EYES ARE SEEING.
<Janet> I THINK IT IS, JEAN
<Janet> SOMETIMES IT'S CALLED TONE BALANCE
<beanjean1> ok, I'll look
<Janet> HISTOGRAM
<Janet> AND WHAT WE'RE WANTING TO DO TO OUR SCANS OR PHOTOS IS TRIM UP THE HISTOGRAM
<Janet> YOU MAY HAVE TO (SHUDDER AGAIN) SEARCH THAT HELP FILE
<Janet> FOR HISTOGRAM
<Janet> THE CLASS PAGE SHOWS THIS, SHOWS THE BELL CURVE THAT IS THE HISTOGRAM FOR MY SAMPLE SCAN
<cak> uh, Janet? What is the difference between a Histogram and Levels (in Photoshop)?
<Janet> AND HOW I TRIMMED IT UP
<Janet> I THINK MAINLY JUST VOCABULARY, CAK
<Janet> LEVELS IS WHAT PHOTO SHOP CALLS THIS, i'M THINKING
<cak> OK, that's what I was hoping
<Janet> (I USE TOO MANY GRAPHICS PROGRAMS, I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT EACH ONE CALLS THIS, BUT I CAN FIND IT IN EACH ONE)
<cak> lol
<Janet> AND EVERY TIME I THINK I'M GOING TO TAKE NOTES SO I CAN TELL YOU BUT I FORGET TO DO IT
<Janet> SO LOOK AT THE EXAMPLE PAGE AT http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/scannertricks/class.html AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT
<Janet> IT MAY MAKE MORE SENSE IF YOU CAN SEE IT
<Janet> IT WILL =REALLY= MAKE SENSE TO YOU ONCE YOU DO IT THE FIRST TIME
<kat> in Corel Photo House it is called Color Mode
<Janet> THANK YOU, KAT!
<beanjean1> I'm getting really tired
<beanjean1> I'll have to check out the og I guess
<beanjean1> oops LOG
<Janet> SO IT PROBABLY IS CALLED COLOR MODE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN COREL'S PHOTO PAINT PROGRAM
<beanjean1> thanks janet
<Janet> LOOK AT THE CLASS PAGE, JEAN, THAT WILL MAKE SENSE OF IT
<Janet> AND THEN TRY IT
<beanjean1> ok thanks I will
<beanjean1> thanks again, have fun!!!
<Janet> HAVE I CONFUSED EVERYBODY HERE? OR ARE YOU LOOKING AT THE EXAMPLE?
<Janet> (OR ARE YOU READING EMAIL OR GOSSIPING WITH SOMEONE IN PRIVATE?<G>)
<Susan> i'm with you
<Janet> LOL GOOD DEAL, SUSAN. SO IT'S MAKING SENSE TO YOU?
<Lory> gossiping
<vickiconfu> were your ears burning, janet?
<cak> so far, so good
<MomCat> if you trimmed the Histogram, how come it has more lines?
<Janet> LOL LONG AS YOU REPEAT IT ALL FOR ME LATER
<Susan> i do this at work alot
<Susan> i mean a lot
<Janet> AM I EXPLAINING IT WHERE IT MAKES SENSE THEN?
<vickiconfu> a little
<cak> it is to me
<Janet> DIANE, IT'S TRIMMED SO THE SPIKES SHOW UP MORE. THE TRAILING DROPPING OFF COLORS ARE NOW TRIMMED OFF AND GONE
<stubby> i am here and trying to learn, a bit massive for this small brain
<Janet> SO YOUR BELL CURVE IS COVERING YOUR WHOLE HISTOGRAM, INSTEAD OF JUST THE MIDDLE (OR ONE END) OF IT
<MomCat> O K thanks
<Janet> ANDY, IT'S EASIER ONCE YOU DO IT. IT JUST SOUNDS HARD, IT'S A LOT EASIER TO DO THAN TO TALK ABOUT
<cak> yeah, just play with the endpoints and the midpoint and see what they do--very instructive
<stubby> you are doing great. keep going
<MomCat> and the reset button is your friend?
<Susan> trimming the histogram is like cutting out all the noisy, uneeded information and allowing you to focus on your big peak, which is the colors you want
<Janet> MY PERSONAL PROCESS FOR TRIMMING IS TO MOVE EITHER END TO THE BULK OF THE ENDPOINTS AND THEN SORT OF EXPERIMENT WITH THE MIDPOINT ONE. THAT'S THE ONE THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR SHADES OF COLORS TO BE MORE TRUE
<Janet> OOOO YES SUSAN! THAT'S PERFECT!!!
<cak> lol--I have a long and abiding aquaintance with Reset
<Janet> OH YES AND ALWAYS REMEMBER AND NEVER FORGET.... UNDO IS YOUR FRIEND.
<vickiconfu> sticker remover???
<Janet> LOL ALMOST AS GOOD, VICKI
<cak> lol
<stubby> wish there was an undo button on life sometimes
<Janet> YOU CAN'T "BREAK" YOUR GRAPHIC. SAVE IT RIGHT AFTER YOU SCAN IT, BEFORE YOU TOUCH IT
<Janet> THEN "SAVE AS" A DIFFERENT NAME AND PLAY WITH IT
<Susan> yeah, undo, undo, undo
<Janet> NO KIDDING, ANDY. WHERE YOU CAN SEE LATER THAT LIFE DECISION WASN'T THE BEST ONE, TO CLICK AND GO BACK TO THAT POINT AND TRY THAT PIECE OF LIFE AGAIN
<stubby> wow what a concept!
<Susan> where can i buy that function?
<Janet> AND IF I DON'T TELL YOU ANYTHING ELSE, I'LL HOPE YOU GO AWAY WITH THIS INSTRUCTION... PLAY! PLAY WITH YOUR SOFTWARE! YOU CAN'T BREAK IT, SO PUSH THE BUTTONS, PLAY WITH THE FILTERS, HAVE FUN AND SEE WHERE YOU GO
<Janet> AND MY PERSONAL SUGGESTION, DO THE "SAVE AS" THE DIFFERENT NAME BEFORE YOU PLAY, BECAUSE SOME OF US FORGET AND DO THE CONTROL-S... AND OVERWRITING YOUR ORIGINAL WITH SOMETHING YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE ISN'T A GOOD IDEA
<Janet> IF YOU'VE SAVED AND STASHED YOUR ORIGINAL, YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK
<Janet> LET ME RUN FETCH A DRINK REFILL AND THEN TAKE QUESTIONS, SO IF YOU DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE EXAMPLE, LOOK NOW http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/scannertricks/class.html
<Janet> AHHHH FULL COFFEE CUP. I'M GOOD FOR A WHILE YET. :)
<stubby> vicki, i amalways fussing at stampers for not playing with their products. just as guilty with all this computer stuff we own
<Janet> ANY QUESTIONS?
<Janet> AND YES! PLAY!
<vickiconfu> good point andy
<Janet> PUSH THE BUTTONS.
<Janet> FILTERS ARE WAY COOL. PLAY WITH 'EM.
<cak> Janet, what about that Sharpen filter (I'm afraid of it)?
<Janet> I LIVE TO SHARPEN<G>
<cak> like Why does Unsharp mask seems to sharpen the image?
<Janet> IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES, ESPECIALLY AFTER I'VE TAKEN MY 150 DPI SCAN DOWN TO 75 DPI, I ALWAYS LIKE TO RUN IT THROUGH THE SHARPEN FILTER
<MomCat> I feel like I know a lot more about the scanner, but am still scared of the digital camera and I have a wedding to photograph in August
<Janet> DIANE, JUST TAKE THE PHOTOS LIKE YOU ALWAYS DO, ONLY TAKE A LOT MORE OF 'EM BECAUSE THE "FILM" IS FREE!
<cak> sounds like another class! (Sign her up brenda!)
<Janet> THEN WORK WITH THE FILES JUST LIKE THEY WERE SCANS
<vickiconfu> janet, i have a really cheap scanner, therefore prolly dinky software, so can i do this stuff on it?
<Janet> VICKI YOU SURE CAN
<brenda> k
<Janet> YOUR REAL WORKING PARTS ARE YOUR GRAPHICS SOFTWARE RATHER THAN YOUR SCANNING SOFTWARE
<MomCat> thanks, Janet
<vickiconfu> what's my graphics software??
<Janet> REALLY, DIANE, IF YOU'LL THINK OF THE PICTURES YOU TAKE AS "SCANS" YOU'LL BE MORE COMFORTABLE, YOU FEEL PRETTY COMPETENT WORKING WITH YOUR SCANS
<Janet> UHHHH WHATEVER SOFTWARE YOU USE TO RESIZE YOUR SCANS, PROBABLY, VICKI. ADOBE ELEMENTS? PHOTOSHOP LE? THOSE COME WITH SCANNERS LOTS OF TIMES.
<vickiconfu> scanner software??
<cak> What about Photo Paint, isn't that the paint program that comes with Windows?
<Janet> IF YOU DON'T HAVE SEPARATE GRAPHICS SOFTWARE, i'D TELL YOU TO GO BUY A GRAPHICS/PHOTO EDITING PROGRAM. MAINLY BECAUSE YOU'LL HAVE LOTS OF FUN PLAYING WITH IT
<Janet> MICROSOFT PAINT.
<Janet> PHOTO PAINT COMES WITH COREL DRAW (AND IS VERY SLICK FOR A LOWER COST PROGRAM)
<cak> Ah! thanks
<Janet> MICROSOFT PAINTBRUSH. THAT'S THE NAME OF IT.
<kat> Got to go. Nite all.
<MomCat> Paintbrush was with W3.x
<Janet> IT'S ICKY, IN MY NOT HUMBLE OPINION, OF COURSE. I LIKE ALL THE ADOBE ONES, THE COREL ONES AND THE MICROGRAFX ONES
<stubby> night Kat
<MomCat> I think the new versions are different
<cak> night kat
<Janet> ADOBE ELEMENTS IS LIKE $99, VERY NICE SOFTWARE FOR THE PRICE
<MomCat> and Paintbursh is great fun!
<MomCat> you can do things pixel by pixel in it
<Janet> MICROGRAFX (JUST BOUGHT BY COREL) HAS A NEW PICTURE PUBLISHER EDITION OUT THAT IS LESS THAN THAT AND IT DOES A LOT FOR THE PRICE
<Janet> YEP, WE'RE JUST TALKING GRAPHICS NOW.
<Janet> LORY, WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?
<Janet> IF YOU HAVE LOTS OF MONEY? BUY ADOBE PHOTO SHOP. IT'S MY FAVORITE.
<MomCat> YOu can look around for one of the older, remaindered versions of Corel
<Janet> SUSAN? WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?
<Lory> did i hear my name?
<Susan> i love photoshop
<Susan> we use that at work for our microscope images
<Janet> OR GO ON EBAY AND BUY NOT THE LATEST VERSION OF COREL. I JUST BOUGHT COREL 8 FOR A FRIEND FOR $15 ON EBAY LAST WEEK
<Lory> photoshop of course
<Janet> LOL, THEN IT'S UNANIMOUS. PHOTO SHOP WINS.
<Janet> IT'S ALSO WHAT? $500 NEW?
<Lory> :X
<Susan> i'm not sure. work pays for it.
<vickiconfu> that's not going to happen
<cak> Ebay has some for cheap though (older)
<MomCat> Vicki, these are pros!
<Janet> LOL. I BOUGHT IT FOR ONLY $200. VERSION 2 I THINK. I WON'T DISCUSS HOW MUCH I'VE PAID FOR ALL THE UPGRADES OVER THE YEARS.<G>
<MomCat> You can get an older version much cheaper.
<Susan> i love ebay! and half.com to puchase things for a great price!
<Janet> YEAH, EBAY YOU CAN FIND LIKE VERSION 5 FOR LESS THAN $100.
<AFKraven> I still like Corel better than Photoshop for most routine things!
<Janet> (VERSION 6 FOR ME WAS THE VERSION FROM HELL, I HOPE 7 IS KINDER TO ME, I JUST BOUGHT THE UPGRADE LAST NIGHT)
<Lory> v5 is not a bad pgm
<Lory> 6 evil evil evil
<Lory> 6.01 good
<Susan> :-)
<cak> I can't wait to try the healing brush (great for your tiling technique Janet). Not that I've bought it yet
<stubby> v8 is a real good juice LOL
<Janet> AND I STILL LOVE MICROGRAFX PICTURE PUBLISHER, I WAS A BETA TESTER FOR IT LOTSA YEARS AGO AND THOSE ARE THE KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS I KNOW IN MY SLEEP
<Janet> SORTA LIKE WORD STAR<G>
<Susan> haven't heard that name for years - word star
<Janet> LOL. THE THINGS THAT REMAIN DEAR TO OUR HEARTS. I WONDER WHATEVER HAPPENED TO WORD STAR? BACK WHEN I SWORE I'D NEVER USE WORD PERFECT.
<Lory> janet, check the user forums before you load 7
<Janet> (WHICH WAS BEFORE I SWORE I'D NEVER USE MS WORD)
<Janet> ARE THERE PATCHES ALREADY?
<Janet> AMAZON HAD THE 7 UPGRADE FOR $99 OVER THE WEEKEND. I COULDN'T RESIST.
<Lory> i dont know, but they will know (thats how adobe puts out the info now)
<cak> are the forums on the adobe website Lory?
<Lory> yes
<vicki> janet, when i scan a pic and save it to floppy in jpg format from scanner, i get a pop up box that says saving to a lossey file may cause damage to image data
<Janet> I'm taking off my caps now. we've disintegrated into my personal very biased opinions<g>
<vicki> what does this mean????
<Lory> and you dont have to register to look at them
<Janet> Vicki, when you save to a jpg, it's a compression scheme...
<Susan> you are throwing away some of your data
<Janet> uhhh sorta like a road map that doesn't show you Oklahoma City between Dallas and St. Louis. You know it's there, it's like you can practically see it on the map. but it's dropped out to save space.
<Janet> so save it as a tif or bmp or a not-compressed image first. then you can always go back to the original
<Susan> (i grew up in oklahoma)
<vicki> but when i open floppy, picture looks fine
<Janet> but on web pages, you do want the smallest possible file that will look good
<Janet> (me too. Bartlesville)
<Susan> (Norman)
<cak> (Oklahoma City)
<Lory> janet, my password doesnt work anymore to get to employee docs on web so i cant see what the real scoop on 7 is
<Janet> well, dang, Lory, so gossip with former co-workers and get me the dirt on 7
<cak> vicki, I think it'll be fine for looking on the monitor, but if you tried to print it out, you might be in trouble. And every time you save a jpg more info drops out, so that's a concern (correct me if I'm wrong, y'all)
<Janet> so before we start mourning the demise of Munchies Sandwiches, are there any other questions?
<cak> how much can you compress before getting some butt ugly pics?
<vicki> cak, you should not sit on your scanner
<cak> if you're doing work for the web
<vicki> sorry, couldn't resist
<cak> lol--that'd compress it alright!
<MomCat> rofl, Vicki
<Janet> well, cak, keep compressing and saving until you get that butt ugly version, then throw that one away and go back to the one saved right before then
<keribou> thanks for class janet
<MomCat> Nite, Keri
<Susan> i know a great way to decompress
vicki gets silly when brain is overloaded
<MomCat> Good class, Janet, thanks
<April> lol
<Lory> janet, use the new number on the cd rom to install
<Janet> thank you all for coming. hope it was somewhat helpful
<Lory> even though an upgrade
<MomCat> Very
<cak> it was!
<Janet> ohhh okay
<Lory> most issues seem to be on the mac
<Janet> so not too far. worked at the sooner superette
<vicki> janet, believe it or not, i think i may have absorbed a little of this
<Janet> whoa vicki. now go use it and play with your stuff and it will cement in
<cak> that's why we make her do this over and over--we get a little more in the head each time
<vicki> yes, i can see it will take time
<vicki> and many lessons
<Lory> they are saying actually a good release
<AFKraven> nite all!
<Susan> thanks for the class. i learn something all the time!
<Janet> excellent news. since I already bought it.
Lory smooches rave
<cak> Lory, so you say I should hold off for a while before upgrading?
<cak> (I use a Mac)
<Janet> Thank you for being here. Your explaination of trimming the histogram was most excellent, I'll retain that one.
<stubby> i think i lost a little fear of it all just by the confidence you show, thanks janet
<Janet> Andy, save then play. you can't break anything. For real.
<Lory> what os cak?
<vicki> andy, i told you so
<cak> um, just a sec while I check (although DR is thinking about getting a new one so we'll have OS X too)
<Janet> I have confidence, because if anybody could break it, I already'd have it done broke
<MomCat> lol
<cak> v9.0.4
<Lory> i think it only runs on X
<Janet> and if I remember to save first, I can't break it bad enough not to get back to where I started from
<cak> so not in the classic mode?
<stubby> When they make a mistakein stamping, i tell them to put a flower or butterfly on it. guess i will have to learn how to put a save on it
<Janet> That's it! there's always a way to recover. And a lot easier on the computer, we don't use permanent ink in here.
<Janet> Andy, stick with us. We'll take ya places you didn't know your computer could go.
<cak> thanks Lory--got side-tracked there
<stubby> that won't be hard to do, haven't been many places
<Lory> cak, web says 9.1 lowest it runs on...9.1 9.2 10.1.3
<Janet> it will, scout. just play with your stuff
<Susan> nite Scout
<brenda> nite everyone
<stubby> nite Scout
<cak> gotcha! thanks--now I have a good excuse to ask for a new one too! (and this one is only about a 1 1/2 years old)
<MomCat> the important thing about playing with graphics software is to pay attention to what you are doing
<MomCat> so if a mistake turns out cool you can do it again on purpose
<MomCat> that is how I learned Corel draw
<Janet> that's one thing i don't do, Diane, I don't really pay attention. I just push buttons until I like it
<Susan> undo
<Janet> undo is my friend
<Lory> that is the one thing i did teach, if you like it you wont be able to recreate it if you dont keep up, and if you hate it you will keep doing it
MomCat is learning some =very= basic hardware stuff
<Lory> but i dont actually DO that
