<Janet> i'm in trouble y'all
<Janet> we did
<brenda> you are?????????
<cak> uh oh--how come?
<Janet> i am. big time. just found out yesterday tonight is ribbon embroidery class and I thought that was for during convention
<brenda> hey keri
<brenda> uh oh
<Janet> hey Heather
<cak> ooops! How about a discussion class of some sort instead?
<keribou> hi
<brenda> sure
<Janet> sounds good to me
<brenda> i love discussion classes
<brenda> i always learn a lot with them
<Janet> LOL
<keribou> how about what classes people want as part of the discussion?
<keribou> please
<Janet> oh yeah, that's a great idea, Heather
<keribou> I need class ideas for gg for after convnetion
<cak> that's a good idea keri
<Janet> I have zero ideas.
<cak> how about how to teach an on-line class--there's plenty of talent here right now
<Janet> That's a good class idea, CAK.
<Janet> hey Vicki
<vicki> hey janet!
<Janet> howdy Debbie
<cak> here's vicki and debbie
<Vyx> hi Janet, hiya all
<cak> hiya
<Janet> hey Vyx and Scout
<Scout> any class tonite or can I eat?
<Janet> Eat, Scout, and share dessert with me
<Janet> Rosem!
<cak> and here's Rosem too
<Rosem> hiya
<Janet> (when is wheat available again?)
<Scout> You mean when is it harvested?
<Rosem> oh...the wheat
<Rosem> chris did some checking
<brenda> hey rosem
<brenda> got the stamps
<Rosem> the kind you are getting is a long-stalk
<brenda> thanks
<Rosem> yeah brenda!
<brenda> ty
<Rosem> we grow a dwarf variety
<Rosem> which doesn't have long enough stalks for much weaving
<Janet> so there's not enough stalk for weaving?
<Scout> What is the wheat for? Going to grind your own diabetic bread?
<Janet> dang. it was such a good idea too
<Janet> LOL gonna teach a wheat weaving class
<cak> I already made arrangements with my boss--she grows wheat and she's gonna try to get me about a dozen stalks with heads. Is that correct janet?
<brenda> hey lea
<Janet> sounds great, CAK, that'll work for weaving
<Janet> hey Lea
<Legs> hey Brenda
<cak> Yay!
<Scout> Would the wheaty looking grass that is drying now in San Diego work? I usually pull them out when they dry and use them in dried arrangements and on cards.
Janet is a tract home gal
<Legs> so, what IS the class toniught?
<Janet> those would work great.
<debbies_di> i just can't right now...too much going on...they are working me full time at Hobby Lobby,...wanting classes and store resets too...
<Janet> Lea? Eat wheat and die.
<cak> (I think we're specializing in milling about Lea)
<Janet> Raven?
<Raven> hello
<Janet> milling about? wheat? do I detect a theme here?
<beanjean1> hi raven
<beanjean1> thanks brenda
<brenda> yw
<cak> lol! I'm ashamed to admit, it wasn't intentional (I mill about mindlessly a lot)
<Scout> all the sharks are milling about here, waiting to see the word "class" appear
<vicki> lol, vyx
<cak> and here's Charmaine
[the logger was dropped momentarily here]
<Raven> so what IS class and where do I peek at a web page
<Janet> the milling around is my fault. I'm supposed to be teaching and I didn't know until yesterday and I am unprepared
<Charmaine> Janet will be winging it tonight
<Raven> aha! an unprepped teacher! LOL!
<Legs> so, Janet...we give you permission to teach us more scanning tricks instead
<cak> lol
Raven ducks as a wing wings by
<Legs> or cak can teach
<Janet> Yeah, I can TELL you how to do ribbon embroidery embellishments on cards, but some diagrams and samples woulda been nice.
<Legs> no, we just don't care
<cak> oh yeah (she says sarcastically)
<Janet> Yeah, CAK can teach.
<Legs> we don't neeed no steenkin ribbon embroidery class
<Janet> LOL
<cak> about the only thing I've been specializing in procrastination
<Legs> cos we know all that already, right?
<Raven> procrastination?
<Janet> oh right. we do. :)
<Raven> I can teach procrastination
<vicki> how about a class on procrastination, cak?
<Vyx> me too... lol, I can teach milling about, too.... rotf
<Legs> surely there are some ribbon embrodiery sites out there somewhere
<beanjean1> hey I can teach one on that TOO
<Janet> my real problem is that my sister was doing and scanning the samples for me because while I can teach this, my creations are only barely adequate and hers are beautiful
<cak> lol--do you really want to learn my bad habits? (believe me, you don't)
<beanjean1> the procrastination
<beanjean1> :(
<Janet> ribbon embroidery is real easy to do. Not so easy to do WELL
<brenda> i already know how to procrastinate
<Janet> that and I'm allergic to threading needles
<Legs> and your sister decised to do, what??????? crack cocaine?
<Rosem> I can teach a class on procrastination.....tomorrow
<cak> how about at least telling the tiling technique for web page backgrounds? (not really embroidery though)
<cak> lol Rosem!
<brenda> lol rosem
<Janet> Oh, how to make web backgrounds?
<Vyx> heh
<Raven> as soon as it takes a needle and something I can get tangled up in... I'm lost
<Janet> that tile instead of be checkerboards?
<AmyLPR> hi
<cak> yep! that's always a best-seller
<Vyx> g'night y'all, have a good class
<cak> night Vyx
<vicki> nite vyx
<beanjean1> nite vyx
<Janet> it's not as bad as most embroidery, because you only use like 12" of ribbon at a time and it doesn't tangle like floss does
<Janet> and even I can thread a chenille needle most of the time
<Charmaine> Janet, do you embroider on cardstock or on fabric and theninsert in cardstock?
<Janet> but my sister's stuff is gorgeous and mine is just adequate
<Janet> charmaine, both. I actually did better on cardstock
<Janet> vellum worked out great
<Janet> hey angel
AmyLPR asks what is class tonight?
<Charmaine> I am interested now...
<Janet> how about I wing ribbon embroidery, then teach it with graphics and samples and stuff during convention week (when I thought I was gonna teach it)
<AmyLPR> oh ok
<AmyLPR> bye bye
<April> that would be good!
<Charmaine> sort of a convention teaser
<beanjean1> you know if you did it on a fabric POCKET, then someone could actually USE it
<cak> sounds good to me!
<Legs> sounds good, Janet
<beanjean1> and then insert it in a card....
<Janet> you can use any kind of fabric that appeals to you. but if it is real light, you'll want to put some stablizing stuff on it
<Legs> like iron on stuf?
<Janet> yeah, like iron on stuff. there's stuff you can buy that you iron on, then when you're done with the embroidery you just wet it and it disappears
<cak> do you use a permanent stablizer or one of the dissolvable ones or does it matter?
<Janet> or if you're doing a fabric insert in a card, you can iron interfacing on the back and leave it, cuz nobody's gonna wear it as a collar or anything
<cak> (oops, sorry, I should learn to read)
<Janet> but I was making ribbon roses on cardstock and those worked just fine. vellum looked gorgeous (like a creamy batiste) and was easier to pierce with the needle for me
<Janet> I got wimpo hands
<Janet> and I was using the quarter inch organza ribbon from The Pampered Stamper in the mall (hence why I was even doing it to begin with, so I'd do a convention class for her) and they looked pretty good
<cak> have you ever punched first before embroidering on cardstock? (kinda like those "first embroidery" cards)
<Janet> but my sister's stuff was drop dead gorgeous
<Janet> oh! that would be a great idea. and I could punch out my pattern and not forget what I was doing in the middle of doing it
<beanjean1> so, you going to scan your sister's stuff for class?
<Janet> I am! or rather she is.
<debbies_di> i just did a hand die cut from shrink plastic...this thing is just too cute...
<Janet> (I called her last night when I realized this was tonight and not in three weeks, she just laughed at scanning last night)
<beanjean1> lol debbie
<cak> I bet you could punch that, then shrink it, then embroider it?
<Janet> I was using evo oval templates to make the holes.
<debbies_di> shoot yeah I could
<Janet> i mean, the ovals for the inserts.
<cak> lol! I was wondering what size ribbon you were using for template holes!
<Janet> not the needle holes, I was using the chenille needle for that. which is just a real skinny sharp needle with a BIG hole
<Janet> hey trill
<trillback> Hi
<Janet> So you thread the needle with your ribbon, only there's a trick to this, too, cuz you don't wanna tie a knot in your ribbon
<Janet> thread it, then stick your needle in the other end of the ribbon, about an inch from the end, then pull it through, so it's sorta sewn onto your needle
<Janet> so it doesn't slip out on ya
<brenda> can you do this like crossstitch and take the two ends thru the eye to start?
<Janet> (a diagram of this would be very helpful, wouldn't it?)
<April> yes it would!lol
<Janet> i didn't try that, brenda, I just did the catch the end trick
beanjean1 has done ribbon embroidery before....
<brenda> k ty
<cak> so far, so good for me Janet
keribou is lost... I'll retake this class in convention summer school
<Janet> Jean, tell 'em what I really mean then, when I had that caught on the other end from what I threaded
<debbies_di> debbie has done ribbon embroidery for years
<Janet> I want scans from you all too then
<Janet> this is beautiful stuff
<Janet> and I just did the roses and the buds and freesia blooms and leaves
<beanjean1> janet, I thought you explained it fine
<Janet> whew<g>
<debbies_di> yeah...me too...I understood
<beanjean1> well, I've never done a card
<cak> do you still have your collar (Chico-blessed) on the server?
<Janet> Try it on vellum, Jean. it works great
<beanjean1> hmmm
<Janet> I do somewhere.
<Janet> and Gay made this awesome card, she used the evo oval to cut a hole for her insert, then dry embossed around the edges of that
<Janet> (gay is my sister)
<cak> cool--
<beanjean1> well can't wait to SEE
<Janet> I was just doing floral watercolors for the inset pieces and a ribbon rose on the corner
<April> sounds nice!
<Janet> and I had better luck doing the leaves first, then the rose last
<cak> that sounds lovely--very elegant
<Janet> Leaves are really easy...
<beanjean1> leaves are pretty simple
<Janet> You pull the ribbon up where you want one of the edges of your leaf...
<Janet> then sort of hold the ribbon across with your finger and put the needle back through where you want the other end of the leaf....
<Janet> except you pierce through the ribbon, too!
<Janet> so that other end ends up with a curled up look to it
<Janet> did that make sense? (diagram again would be awfully helpful)
<cak> I think so--the leaf is a single strand of ribbon?
<Janet> yes, the leaf is a single strand, just straight up through the card on one end, but sort of curled and doubled back on itself on the other end
<Janet> and that's the same way you make freesia blossoms
<Janet> (but you use pink or magenta ribbon for those)
<debbies_di> you can do the chain, lazy daisy, and french knot...and make some very simple but elegant looking flowers and leaves
<beanjean1> well, depending on how tight you pull the ribbon then look different
<cak> how tight do you pull your stitches Janet? or does it depend on what you're making?
<beanjean1> (the leaves)
<Janet> Debbie, explain what I'm trying to say with the leaf, it's sort of a modified chain, but only one stitch
<Janet> stitches very loose.
<vicki> lazy daisy stitch
<debbies_di> well depends on what look you want tight or loose
<debbies_di> either is fine
<Janet> or not VERY loose, very loose is roses, leaves are sorta loose
<debbies_di> didn't y'all learn to embroider with floss when you were kids
<Janet> (and for the record, organza looks very different than silk, I liked the silk on fabric best, but the organza on cardstock best)
<debbies_di> you just use the same stitches...except with 1/8 or 1/4 inch ribbon
<Janet> yeah, French knots you do just the same as with floss, only with ribbon it looks way cooler
<debbies_di> i have used 1/8 inch craft ribbon and did flowers and leaves
<debbies_di> remember, you are only limited by your imagination
<cak> (nope, knitting, crochet, sewing, some photo, some pattern design, some piano, but no embroidery)
<Janet> exactly!
<Janet> this is easier than floss embroidery to me, because you can tweak on the ribbon and it looks cool
<Janet> you don't have to get it exactly straight or taut
<debbies_di> well...go to the embroidery section in your local store...and just look at the books on ribbon embroidery
<debbies_di> very easy to do
<Janet> my sister was doing other details on her flowers with floss after she put in the ribbon. I didn't get that fancy
<Janet> other than little bunches of French knots for centers
<cak> from what I've seen of ribbon embroidery, you don't have to. the ribbon is just beautiful
<debbies_di> yeah, cak you are right
<Janet> my sister taught me two different kinds of roses. both were pretty easy and they look completely different
<Janet> one you start with a floss the same color as your cardstock or cloth and make a five-legged spider
<debbies_di> i stick to the very simple flowers and leaves...but thats is only because I am a simple person
<Janet> then take your ribbon needle and weave it in and out of the spider legs, starting at the center and moving out until it is as large as you like
<vicki> janet, that's called spider stitch
<Janet> and you let the ribbon twist however it does and stay loose to cover the spider legs
<Janet> LOL the wrong person is teaching this class!! (but if I can understand it, anybody can)
<Janet> Vicki, it makes gorgeous roses!
<debbies_di> you can do rings of the lazy daisy stitch to create what looks like star flowers...etc...
<Janet> I was impressed as hell with myself
<debbies_di> and rings of chain stitches can look like mums
<Janet> ooooo mums! I gotta try that now!!
<Janet> I was so impressed with my freesias
<debbies_di> i relate to the way I paint...and make flower petals...then just do that with ribbon
<Janet> and that I just did with the leaf stitch (the one you double back on yourself at the end)
<Janet> I don't know what the stitch is called where you bring the ribbon up in the center, then back down at the same spot but don't pull it tight, just pull it until you have a loop the size you want your petal
<Janet> then do that like five times and you have a flower
<debbies_di> thats the lazy daisy stitch
<cak> so a lot of it is looking at stuff and finding a stitch to imitate it?
<Janet> french knot in the middle and wow, it looks way cool
<debbies_di> yes, cak
<Janet> it was for me. I'm needle-ignorant
<Charmaine> Janet, have you embellished a rubber stamped image with ribbon emb.?
<Janet> Charmaine, that's what I was mainly doing, putting little ribbon flowers in the corners of my cards
<debbies_di> everyone interprets are differently...there is no wrong or right...just personal interpretation
<debbies_di> art
<Charmaine> I'm thinking of some of my blah stamps - this would give them new life
<Janet> but I did learn that if I did the leaves before I did the flowers, it looked more natural
<Janet> it would!
<Janet> a little ribbon knot in the center of flowers, or whatever. I had a great time doing this.
<cak> because you're working back to front (and covering the right stuff)?
<debbies_di> see Janet thats how nature grows them...leaves first then the flowers bloom
<Charmaine> lol debbie
<Janet> LOL that's why, CAK. back to front and covering up one of the leaf ends with the flowrs
<MomCat> not always
<beanjean1> hey, I just scanned a ribbon embroidery picture frame that I did a few years ago....
<MomCat> lots of trees flower first then leaf
<beanjean1> and put it on yahoo
<Janet> but that's how it worked out best with ribbon embroidery for me every time
<Janet> give us a url, jean?
<debbies_di> yeah...but not the kind we were emb.
<beanjean1> http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/jeanjohnson2002/vwp?.dir=/Vest+Card&.src=ph&.dnm=Ribbon+embroidery.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/jeanjohnson2002/lst%3f%26.dir=/Vest%2bCard%26.src=ph%26.view=t
<beanjean1> OH DEAR
<beanjean1> sorry
<beanjean1> uhhh
<Janet> that's BEAUTIFUL!
<beanjean1> you could click on THAT?????
<Janet> I have frame stamps from AAS, too. I could embellish those with ribbon embroidery
<beanjean1> it wasn't too long?
<Janet> I did and it came up. I was surprised
<beanjean1> thanks
<beanjean1> I only did a couple of things, and that was one of them
<Janet> I see the leaves like I made and the daisy flowers too
<brenda> gorgeous bj
<beanjean1> cool, wonder if it'll help everyone understand...
<Janet> Oh and you can use little seed pearls for centers or embellishments, too, just tack 'em on with floss
<beanjean1> thanks brenda
<Janet> My sister did a piece with dragonflies
<debbies_di> Oh Jean...that is beautimuss
<beanjean1> the smaller cream flowers have a french knot at the end
<beanjean1> thanks debbie
<Charmaine> very pretty, bean
<beanjean1> it's been so long since I did it!
<Janet> she made a line of pearls for the body, then used that irridescent organza ribbon for the wings, like that daisy stitch but long ones.
<beanjean1> thanks charmaine
<Janet> those were awesome
<beanjean1> oh janet that sounds COOL
<cak> those sound beautiful too
<Janet> then antennae outta floss, just straight stitches
<beanjean1> like usual, I HAVE all of the stuff, just need to get it out and do
<Janet> it was really impressive, I was gonna copy it but didn't yet
<beanjean1> would be nice to use that ink that fades, and use floral stamps and fill in the pattern
<Janet> organza ribbon really has a sparkle to it. the silk ribbon was a softer (and more natural) looking flower
<Janet> oh that would be very cool!
<Charmaine> I have old X-stitch kits I could cannibalize for the silk ribbons...
<Janet> organza was perfect for dragonfly wings
<beanjean1> or is it wash out ink....can't remember
<Janet> there ya go, charmaine!
<Janet> well, if you used an ink color close to the color of your cardstock, once you did the ribbon embroidery on top of it, the ink wouldn't show much anyway
<beanjean1> hey great idea janet...
<Janet> great idea Charmaine!
<cak> Comotion had a line of fancy LARGE initials just for ribbon embroidery (and the fading ink too)
<beanjean1> but I'm still in the mode to use fabric, and make like a sachet bag....and insert it in a cutout on the card
<beanjean1> oh that's right cak
<beanjean1> that was on CD
<brenda> hey lory
<Janet> evo templates are great for fabric inserts. and when gay did that dry embossing with the brass stencil thingies around the edge of the oval, that was drop dead gorgeous
<beanjean1> hi lory
<Janet> hey Lory
<Lory> hey
<Janet> Lory, look at this>
<Janet> http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/jeanjohnson2002/vwp?.dir=/Vest+Card&.src=ph&.dnm=Ribbon+embroidery.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/jeanjohnson2002/lst%3f%26.dir=/Vest%2bCard%26.src=ph%26.view=t
<Janet> that's Jean's ribbon embroidery.
<Janet> (It's so nice to have samples when I don't)
<beanjean1> well, I was trying to think, I MUST have something....
<Janet> okay, Jean, Vicki, Debbie... what should I have told that I didn't?
<beanjean1> but when it's hung around FOREVER you forget
<vicki> try not to stick the needle in your finger
<debbies_di> LOL
<beanjean1> did you talk about french knots....
<beanjean1> so very cool
<Janet> I did really like the card I made with white french knots as flowers and white leaves, on white cardstock. very elegant
<beanjean1> the burgundy flowers are french knots
<Charmaine> how do you end a stitch? ape it to card or?
<Janet> love making French knots
<Charmaine> tape not ape
<debbies_di> I been doing shrink plastic die cuts...and listening to y'all
<beanjean1> rofl charmaine
<beanjean1> lol
<beanjean1> I think you could embroider on those debbie
<Janet> I just ran it under the other stitches on the back
<Janet> I think shrink plastic would make excellent embroidery bases
<debbies_di> my hand is just cute...
<debbies_di> i just put a coat of deminsional magic on it...
<Janet> I'm sure there's a more secure way to do it, but I did just run the end of the ribbon under the other stitches on the back.
<beanjean1> janet that's what I did
<Lory> i got some shrink keys cut and they did purdy good
<Janet> I figured nobody was gonna wear my cards so that was good enough
<cak> I always thought you shouldn't knot ribbon embroidery (or any embroidery for that matter)
<vicki> on a card knots would not be necessary
<beanjean1> well, you COULD cover the whole back with two way tape
<Janet> yeah, sandwich the back with another piece of cardstock
<beanjean1> then noone could look at the back
<beanjean1> :)
<Janet> (that way my messy back wouldn't show either)
<vicki> cak, that's when there used to be rules
<beanjean1> that's what I was thinking too janet
<Janet> we don't need no steeenkin rules
<debbies_di> no rules...just imagination
<Janet> my sister was doing this on a real thin batiste (that thin cotton cloth) and she had put that melt away stablizer stuff on it before she embroidered it, then melted away the stablizer stuff
<Janet> but she was making a collar
<Janet> I did do some on a denim workshirt, that was fun!
<beanjean1> heck I have that melt awau stuff too
<beanjean1> SIGH
<Janet> and it made me remember high school where we all embroidered our workshirts to go under our overalls
<debbies_di> well heck...we got shirts on sale at Hobby Lobby...wonder if I can find all my ribbon emb. stuff...
<Janet> make stuff! then scan it and let me use it as samples during this class during convention!
<vicki> lol
<Janet> (this will be a much better class during convention, I should be prepared. LOL)
<debbies_di> like I need something else to do right now...like I can even find anything in this mess I have here
<Charmaine> Thanks for a great class, Janet. You did great. Just what I need - another hobby...
<Janet> You're selling die cuts fast as you can cut 'em lately. This is a good thing :)
<debbies_di> y'all I got 6 boxes of paints in my storage...and have no idea if I have colors I need for bible school...
<debbies_di> yeah...a really good thing
<Janet> and wouldn't embroidery look great on die cut boxes??
<cak> oooo, yes!
<debbies_di> and an even better thing would be having the other stuff in the store to selll too...LOL
<debbies_di> book kits...
<debbies_di> chipboard and mat board die cuts
<Janet> LOL so scan 'em and send me all the info and I'll do it. Except if you tried I know you could do it.
<debbies_di> shrink plastic die cuts
<Janet> I think those dragonflies as shrinky dinks would be very cool
<debbies_di> and Sheer heaven die cuts
<Janet> to hang off my pearl and organza embroidered dragonfly!
<cak> perfect
<Janet> so okay, I did an okay job if I got y'all searching your stashed stuff to make this embroidery :)
<debbies_di> and guess what else I discovered
<cak> lol
<Janet> and pampered stamper does have the quarter inch organza real cheap
<Janet> whut?
<brenda> nite everyone
<cak> (as usual Janet)
<MomCat> nite
<Janet> take care, Brenda
<debbies_di> that you can color the sanded shrink with Ranger archival ink...and then stamp on it...with same ink and when it melts its permanent
<brenda> you all too
<debbies_di> nite brenda
<brenda> byeeeeeeeee
<Charmaine> Nite all.
<MomCat> nite
<Janet> you can even color shrink plastic with pigment ink that will never dry, then dip it in utee (a la suze) and it seals it and is awesome looking
<debbies_di> yeah...I saw her do that
<Janet> it shrinks and seals and makes it cool, all at the same time
<debbies_di> in atlanta...that was cool
<cak> Thank you Janet--you've inspired a lot of folks tonight!
<beanjean1> yes thanks, janet
<debbies_di> wonderful class janet...just marvelous
<Janet> LOL, just don't tell my sister. I've got her convinced she's humiliated me by not having samples scanned for me tonight.
<beanjean1> will look forward to seeing your sis's stuff!
<cak> lol
<Janet> Thank you needleartists for bailing me out too!!
<beanjean1> rofl NP!
<debbies_di> you didn't need bailing...
<cak> will Gay be "attending" the convention class too?
<beanjean1> night all!
<debbies_di> we were just sharing our versions
<Janet> I hope she will be.
<Janet> I'm hoping she'll get her act together and give me needleart kits to sell for convention. She's got a smocking supply store
<Janet> (theory is that I do this then she'll NEED a mall store and I'll charge her full rate)
<vicki> lol
<MomCat> lol
<cak> lol--such a subtle trap
<debbies_di> LOL
Janet is a big sister with an Agenda
