<jenmist> http://www.napruszewski.com/jenifer/class/tassel/instruction_page.htm
<AmyLPR> hi
<jenmist> URL for class
<jenmist> I really see these as a starting point for lots of other potential ideas
<jenmist> I saw this in a magazine and immediately tried to see a different way to do them and maybe simplify
<cak> they're lovely
<jenmist> shall we start?
<AmyLPR> beautiful
<AmyLPR> yes please
<cak> s'up to the teach!
<jenmist> THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE QUITE BASIC REALLY
<jenmist> Materials:
<jenmist> -mini/small papier-m‰chŽ boxes
<jenmist> -flat black acrylic paint
<jenmist> -Lumiere paints
<jenmist> -eyelets
<jenmist> -Stamps (all images from Just Jhone)
<jenmist> -Inks (Brilliance used in samples)
<jenmist> -Fibers
<jenmist> -Beads
<jenmist> -Charms (optional)
<jenmist> -Dominos (optional)
<jenmist> -White CS
<jenmist> -Glue
<jenmist> AS TO THE GLUE I USED BEAD GLUE OR YES GLUE
<jenmist> You can use the entire box or only the cover, it depends on the depth of the box, I felt mine were too thick so I used the cover only
<jenmist> THE COVER BECOMES THE PENDANT BASE OF YOUR NECKLACE
<cak> jenmist, the bead glue is cyanoacrylic stuff (like superglue)?
<jenmist> I GUESS - WAS AMY'S MAGIC BEAD GLUE
<cak> I'll have to check that one out (I love adhesives). thanks
<jenmist> YOU CAN FIND VERY TINY MACHE BOXES TOO
<jenmist> MAY NED TO SEARCH FOR THESE, I USED 1 1/2 INCH TO 2 INCH SIZES
<jenmist> IT DEPENDS IF THEY WILL ACTUALLY BE WORN AS A NECKLACE OR USED TO HANG AS A DECORATION
<jenmist> I PLAN TO MAKE SOME OF THESE AS XMAS ORNAMENTS THIS YEAR
<beanjean1> these are very cool Jen!
<jenmist> TY
<jenmist> First use a 1/4 inch punch and punch the spots for the eyelets and insert the eyelets, if you have trouble with the eyelets you can glue them in also. It is harder to do the eyelets after box is painted but you will not paint over the eyelets if you do them last.
<phyl> so, just the tops are used for rhese?
<phyl> these?
<kristi-working> I love adding tassels to my UTEE CD shards
<jenmist> I DID BUT YOU CAN USE THE WHOLE BOX IF YOU WANT- MY BOXES WERE TOO DEEP
<phyl> ty
<jenmist> CAN YOU SEE THE EYELETS IN THE PICTURES? - I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED
<AmyLPR> yes i can
<jenmist> THERE ARE 2 EYELETS IN THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF EACH TO RUN THE CORDING THRU
<phyl> My eyelets always schmoosh- and flatten and fall off- I,m eyelet challenged!
<jenmist> I DID THE EYELETS LAST AND HAD TO GLUE THEM IN AS I COULD NOT PUNCH A GOOD HOLE
<jenmist> CHEAT PHYL CHEAT
<phyl> How???
<jenmist> IT DID MAKE FOR A MUCH MORE FINISHED LOOK
<jenmist> I USED GLUE ON MINE THIS TIME
<jenmist> DO YOU USE AN WYWLET SETTER PHYL?
<cak> http://www.napruszewski.com/jenifer/class/tassel/instruction_page.htm
<jenmist> EYELET SETTER
<phyl> But dosen't it still have to go in the holes and bend and stay?
<phyl> I have one of those things you hammer
<jenmist> I USED GLUE IN THE HOLE AND SLIPPED IN THE EYELETS
<jenmist> WORKED ON THIS - WOULD NOT WORK ON A CARD
<jenmist> I THINK YOU ARE HAMMERING TOO MUCH
<phyl> sounds right. LOL
<jenmist> I MADE 45 FROG PINS LAST YEAR WITH 11 EYELETS EACH
<cak> would you mind addressing a question on setting eyelets? (I'm eyelet challenged also)
<jenmist> 1 TAP WITH SETTER AND A SECOND TAP ON BACK OF EYELET TO SMOOTH IT
<phyl> maybe we need a class for the eyelet challened!
<jenmist> BE SURE YOU HAVE A HARD SURFACE UNDER IT
<phyl> challenged
<jenmist> AND IT WILL LEAVE A MARK ON THAT SURFACE
<phyl> Guess not on my glass tabletop...
<jenmist> IS THAT WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING OR HAMMERING MORE TIMES?
<jenmist> ROFL
<phyl> Hammering is my middle name..
<jenmist> IF YOU HAMMER TOO MUCH THE EYELET WILL DIG RIGHT THRU YOUR CS
<phyl> good for aggression- like stippling
<jenmist> YES
<cak> I have an eyelet setter for sewing eyelets--larger than the ones we usually use I believe. Can it be used for the small eyelets (I just bought some). And is the setter for the small guys any different (except for size)?
<jenmist> I LEARNED THIS BY MY OWN OVER HAMMERING
<cak> lol--you had a good teacher then jenmist
<jenmist> THIS IS A SETTER YOU HAMMER ON - NOT LIKE A GROMMET ATTACHER
<phyl> thanks, from now on, will stipple for aggression and only hammer once (when I think of my ex MIL)
<AmyLPR> lol
<jenmist> YOU CAN EVEN DO IT WITHOUT A SETTER - HAMMER GENTLY ON THE BACK OF THE EYELET
<kat> so gentle is the key
<jenmist> IF YOU ARE STRAIGHT ON (STRAIGHT IS A PROBLEM FOR ME) YOU CAN DO IT WITHOUT THE SETTER
<cak> lol--uh, I suspect I'll be with you. Thanks for the info!
<jenmist> WELL - GENTLE FOR THOSE OF US THAT BELIEVE YOU REALLY NEED TO SWING THAT HAMMER
<jenmist> I WAS BAD AT TENNIS CAUSE MY PARTNER ALWAYS HAD TO CHASE THOSE BALLS I HIT 2 COURTS AWAY
<phyl> The Paul Bunyon School of hammering
<kat> lol
<RubberRabbit> Hi Mom sorry I'm late
<jenmist> HI RR
<RubberRabbit> thanks cak
<kaye> hello all
<jenmist> HELLO
<kaye> sorry im late
<jenmist> OK - ANY OTHER EYELET QUESTIONS?
<TheMadStamper> my eyelets won't bend they are TOO hard:o(
<jenmist> YOU NEED A HOLE TO BRING THE NECK CORDING THROUGH AND THE EYELETS FINISH OFF THE HOLE
<phyl> What about the shaped eyelets- do you apply those the same way?
<jenmist> YES PHYL
<phyl> thanks
<jenmist> I HAVE SOME (HEARTS, OVALS AND FLOWERS) i HAVE NOT TRIED YET
<jenmist> LOL
<RubberRabbit> the hard brass ones need a metal hammer and a block of wood
<jenmist> I HAVE A HUGE EYELET COLLECTION I GAZE UPON
<RubberRabbit> the colored ones are softer
<jenmist> I HAVE HEARD SOME ARE HARDER THAN OTHERS
<phyl> Does the paint chip off the softer ones?
<jenmist> THE COLORED ONES WERE MADE FOR CRAFTS WHILE THE BRASS ONES ARE MORE UTILITARIAN
<RubberRabbit> yes they do so go easier on them
<kaye> what kind of wood or does it matter
<phyl> hardwood
<RubberRabbit> not your coffeetable
<jenmist> LOL
<kaye> what is hard wood
<RubberRabbit> oak, ash, maple
<kaye> simple terms
<jenmist> YOU GET LITTLE CIRCLES ON WHATEVER YOU USE UNDERNEATH
<RubberRabbit> pine is soft
<kaye> thanks
<jenmist> OK, MOVING ON
<RubberRabbit> if you are desperate, use the edge of a stamp mount as the block of wood
<TheMadStamper> balsa is softer LOL!!!!
<jenmist> Paint the box in black. Then basecoat with your main lumiere color. Next sponge additional lumiere colors to accent the piece. Now stamp main image directly on the cover or stamp on white CS.
<jenmist> ON THE LUMIERE SPONGING I DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW (TO ME)
<jenmist> I USE THE WEDGE MAKEUP SPONGES
<jenmist> SHAKE THE BOTTLE OF PAINT AND THE USE THE PAINT IN THE CAP
<cak> no pallette needed, eh?
[the logger was dropped momentarily here]
<jenmist> I WAS VERY HESITANT ON THESE PAINTS AS I AM PAINT IMPAIRED
<rabbitsmom> I haven't yet
<beanjean1> BUT I do have them!
<jenmist> AND I THOUGHT THEM PRICEY
<phyl> They are GREAT!
<jenmist> BUT LAST YEAR I BOUGHT 3 COLORS TO START WITH AND I LOVE THEM
<RubberRabbit> oh the lumieres are lovely
<RubberRabbit> and the newest colors are gorgeous
<jenmist> I FELT SO ARTISTIC - I HAD RP'S AND NUMEROUS OTHER PAINTS THAT SEEMED TOO HARD TO GET A NICE RESULT
<phyl> Ust them on Everything except the cats
<jenmist> LOL
<beanjean1> rofl
<RubberRabbit> Drakedog doesn't seem to mind them
<jenmist> THESE REALLY ARE WONDERFUL TO WORK WITH
<beanjean1> oops
<beanjean1> dh just walked in time for dinner
<beanjean1> bye
<phyl> bye
<beanjean1> thanks jen!!!
<jenmist> BACK TO OUR NECKLACES
<jenmist> IF YOU STAMPED ON CS OR THE BOX DIRECTLY YOU WANT TO EMBOSS WITH CLEAR EP
<jenmist> THE EP WILL STICK TO THE PAINTED SURFACE ON THE DRIECT STAMPED ITEM SO YOU DO NEED TO USE CLEAR
<jenmist> ON THE CS ITEM COLOR YOUR ITEM AS DESIRED
<jenmist> ON THE BOX YOU CAN DAB PAINT TO ADD COLOR TO THE IMAGE DEPENDING ON HOW COLORFUL YOUR BACKGROUND IS
<jenmist> CUT YOUR IMAGE OUT OF THE CS
<jenmist> GLUE ON THE BOX
<jenmist> THEN USE CLEAR INK OR VERSAMARK AND DAB OVER THE TOP - APPLY 3 COATS OR MORE EP
<jenmist> UNTIL YOU ARE HAPY WITH THE EFFECT
<phyl> for a tile effect?
<jenmist> YES
<RubberRabbit> http://www.napruszewski.com/jenifer/class/tassel/instruction_page.htm
<jenmist> YOU CAN DAB MORE PAINT ON NOW TOO IF YOU WISH
<phyl> over the clear ep?
<jenmist> YES
<jenmist> USE A VERY FINE HAND FOR THIS
<jenmist> YOU ALSO ADD CHARMS OR BEADS TO ACCENT YOUR IMAGE
<jenmist> NOW FOR THE NECKLACE CORDING
<jenmist> Use about 3 feet of cording to run through your prepared eyelets. Adjust length to fit so it can go overhead easily. Tie a knot under each bottom eyelet so you the length is set.
<jenmist> HI MOM
<RubberRabbit> http://www.napruszewski.com/jenifer/class/tassel/instruction_page.htm
<jenmist> EXTRA WORD THERE I SEE
<jenmist> MAKE SENSE?
<deb> Jen - those are gorgeous
<jenmist> TY
<cak> Yes! perfect sense
<jenmist> Add a bead or 2 on each side, then about 1-1/2 inches below those beads join the 2 sides together through a few beads
<phyl> Did you use four eyelets- 2 on top and 2 on bottom of lid?
<jenmist> YES PHYL
<jenmist> Prepare the tassel by taking multiple 6 to 7 inch lengths of varied fibers and tying a piece around the middle of the fiber bunch to hold in place
<jenmist> THIS PART IS VERY FUN IF YOU HAVE A LARGE FIBER COLLECTION LIKE ME
<phyl> Does the cord go throught the top inside the cover to the bottom- or two separate pieces?
<jenmist> 1 PIECE OF CORDING
<phyl> ty
<jenmist> MAKES THAT PART EASY
<deb> jen - these are gorgeous
<jenmist> THEY ARE ALSO FUN
<jenmist> HAVE FUN MATCHING FIBERS AND THIS IS ONE WHERE YOU CAN FILL A LOT WITH FLOSS
<phyl> not dental
<jenmist> Next tie the ends of the neck cord around the middle of the fibers and then use glue to attach securely to the bottom bead. After the glue is dried you can trim
<cak> lol--unless you're doing a tooth-oriented image
<TheMadStamper> Embroidery floss?
<jenmist> YES
<TheMadStamper> ok ty
<jenmist> DD HAD LOTS OF FLOSS FROM FRIEDNSHIP BRACELETS
<jenmist> LOT OF NICE COLORS
<jenmist> USE THE GLUE TO MAKE THE TASSEL COLORS DISPLAY AS YOU WANT TOO
<phyl> can you explain that
<jenmist> OK - IF YOU ARE LIKE ME
<jenmist> YOU HAVE THIS BUNCH OF CUT PEICES THAT YOU TIE TOGETHER IN THE MIDDLE
<RubberRabbit> http://www.napruszewski.com/jenifer/class/tassel/instruction_page.htm
<jenmist> THEN WHEN YOU TIE TO THE NECKLACE CORD YOU SEE THAT YOU HAVE NOT ARRANGES THE PIECES IN THE BUNCH TO BEST DISPLAY THE VARIED FIBERS YOU USED
<phyl> ty
<jenmist> SO YOU CAN FORCE THE ARRANGEMENT
<cak> yep, at least *I'm* like you
<jenmist> I GET AHEAD OF MYSELF SOMETIMES AND TOO ANXIOUS TO FINISH
<jenmist> YOU CAN ALSO ATTACH BEADS/CHARMS TO THE FIBERS IN THE TASSEL
<jenmist> NOW - WASN'T THAT EASY
<cak> well, you make it sound easy
<jenmist> I also tried a domino idea where I used the inside of the box top to provide a shadow box look for a decorated domino, this also meant making a domino into a necklace without drilling.
<Copper> the samples are very nice Jenmist
<jenmist> TY
<cak> (we'll see when I actually attempt this)
<jenmist> OH AND ONE OTHER POINT
<jenmist> IF YOU STAMP DIRECTLY ON THE PAINTED BOX AND SMEAR - YOU CAN WIPE OFF GENTLY WITH A BABY WIPE AND STAQMP AGAIN
<phyl> Did you put the cording through a bead together before tying around the tassle?
<jenmist> YES
<phyl> And how did the domino become a necklace without drilling?
<RubberRabbit> beautiful jen
<jenmist> I FOUND A FLATTER LARGE BEAD WORKED WELL FOR THE GLUE TOO
<Marion> A tassel question. Is the tassel open on the top? All the ones I mke are folded over.
<jenmist> THE FIRST SAMPLE IS A DOMINO INSIDE THE BOX COVER
<jenmist> AS IS SAMPLE 5
<jenmist> I decorated the domino by sponging a basecoat of one of the lumiere gold colors. I next added other colors with a wedge makeup sponge - use the edge and dab lines on and then dab over the lines with a clean side of the sponge.
<jenmist> THE LAST SAMPLE IS AN UMOUNTED DOMINO
<phyl> I got it- I think- the cover was facing out and the domino glued inside. How clever!
<jenmist> YES
<jenmist> ONE OF MY CANT FALL ASLEEP AT 1 AM IDEAS
<RubberRabbit> yes jen is very clever
<cak> much easier than drilling the domino
<RubberRabbit> I'd not have thought to use just the lids
<phyl> definitely
<jenmist> Then I used Brilliance graphite black on faces of Just Jhone images and stamped on the dried dominos. Heat set the ink a little and then you can add additional color by sponging more lumiere colors over the top.
<jenmist> I NEEDED TO HEATSET EVEN THE BRILLIANCE ON THESE
<RubberRabbit> we'll see at the next convention what she decides to do with the rest of the box
<jenmist> LOL
<jenmist> I DID THE NECK CORD PART
<jenmist> AND THEN GLUED IN DECORATIVE PAPER FOLLOWED BY THE DOMINO
<phyl> Great ida- like a shadow box frame for the domino!
<jenmist> THE 5TH EXAMPLE IS A DOMINO AND I ADDED A CHARM THAT WENT OVER THE FLOWER IN THE IMAGE
<jenmist> TY
<jenmist> MY SCAN IS VERY POOR ON THAT ONE - I PAINTED THE CHARM TOO AND IT IS REALLY PRETTY
<RubberRabbit> when Jen develops the new ideas for the bottom of those boxes it will prolly something else we'd never consider doing
<jenmist> LOL
<jenmist> OH OH - A CHALLENGE
<jenmist> AFTER THE PMS CANDY BAR IDEA I AM TAPPED
<RubberRabbit> what about us menopause women?
<RubberRabbit> we need a candy bar to call our own too
<RubberRabbit> ROFL
<jenmist> YOU CAN HAVE CHOCOLATE ANYTIME
<jenmist> HORMONES RULE
<Marion> What did you use to color the women in sample 2
<RubberRabbit> yeah told my dh that it is chocolate that protects women from heart disease
<TheMadStamper> yours come with an ice pack LOL
<jenmist> LUMIERE PAINTS MARION
<jenmist> THE IMAGE WAS STAMPED AND EMBOSSED ON WHITE CS FIRST
<jenmist> OH AND I FOUND IT WAS BEST TO USE BLACK TO STAMP WITH\
<Marion> ty
<jenmist> I TRIED THE BLACK LIGHTNING BUT LIKE TOO MUCH METALLIC
<jenmist> DID NOT LOOK RIGHT
<TheMadStamper> is Brilliance the only pads that work on the lumieres?
<phyl> Thanks for a great class-so clear! and such beautiful examples.
<jenmist> OTHERS WORK TOO
<jenmist> TY PHYL
<phyl> ZIMINK works GREAT
<jenmist> YOU CAN USE ANY THING
<jenmist> MAY NEED TO EMBOSS OR HEATSET
<phyl> Thanks again, and goodnight!
<jenmist> NITE
<RubberRabbit> great ideas jen
<TheMadStamper> oh good!:o)
<jenmist> I AM THINKING THESE COULD NICE XMAS ORNAMENTS IDEAS
<RubberRabbit> hope you submit some of these to Somerset Studio for publication
<jenmist> TY RR
<cak> a dominio on each side of the lid?
<jenmist> I HAVE NEVER SUBMITTED ANYWHERE
<jenmist> I AM SHOCKED I TEACH THESE CLASSES
<jenmist> POSSIBLE CAK
<cak> bottom of the box as a diarama box?
<jenmist> OR I AM THINKING SCRAP THE BOX
<jenmist> OOOH - NEAT
<TheMadStamper> many boxes glued together!
<jenmist> I WAS FIGURING 2 HEAVY CS PIECES WITH THE CORD GLUED BETWEEN
<cak> yes!
<jenmist> COULD HAVE MANY SIDED ORNAMENTS TOO
<cak> that would be lovely too--it would twist and dangle so well
<TheMadStamper> yah!
<jenmist> MINE ARE CURRENTLY DECORATING MY COMPUTER STAND
<jenmist> THIS FINALLY GOT ME OVER MY DOMINO FEAR
<jenmist> THERE IS A GREAT DOMINO CLASS TONITE TOO - I SAW SOME OF THEM
<jenmist> GREAT IDEAS!
<cak> with a vengence
<jenmist> LOL
<TheMadStamper> maybe hanging from the rearview mirror? Or is that too tacky for your art?
<jenmist> I LIKE THAT TOO!
<jenmist> GOOD IDEA
<jenmist> DH SAYS FAN PULL
<cak> I do too--bringing blessings (and hopefully protection)
<jenmist> DD WANT TO ATTACH SOME TO HER BACKPACK
<TheMadStamper> pull gently LOL
<jenmist> REALLY - LOL
<cak> they'd be beautiful zipper pulls
<jenmist> THANKS FOR A GREAT CLASS YOU ALL GAVE ME MORE IDEAS TOO
<cak> you may have to use wire instead of cord though?
<jenmist> YES CAK
<jenmist> I THINK SO TOO
<TheMadStamper> kewl!
<jenmist> WIRE IS MY NEXT HURDLE
<cak> have you not worked with it much jenmist?
<TheMadStamper> Go Jen!!!
<jenmist> NO I HAVE NOT
<Froggie> you can do it!
<jenmist> THE FIRST WIRE I TRIED WAS THE PLASTIC COATED KIND AND WASN NOT VERY OBEDIENT
<cak> you can definitely do it. and you need to draft Janet to teach another wire class
<jenmist> good idea
<jenmist> I have better wire now
<cak> makes a big difference I bet
<jenmist> my next project will be memory boxes - project DD wants to work on
<cak> that should be lots of fun
<jenmist> I also need to do more vellum projects
<jenmist> I really have a lot of vellum
<TheMadStamper> I want a lot of vellum;o)
<jenmist> lol
<cak> I just got some and was thinking about cutting it into smaller squares and folding boxes out of 'em. It would keep my hands out fo trouble for a while
<jenmist> ooh - pretty boxes
<jenmist> good for party favors
<cak> that's what I was thinking (I can't resist origami paper either)
<TheMadStamper> oh cool!
<jenmist> lol
<kat> see you all in #wildfrog
<cak> well, thank you so much jenmist--lots of fab ideas
<jenmist> time to move on I think
<jenmist> YW
<Copper> thanks jen
<jenmist> Thanks for your help
<Copper> great class
<Froggie> beautiful work, as always Jen! Thanks
<jenmist> have fun the rest of convention
<cak> it was nothing
<cak> see you later tonight?
<jenmist> TY Froggie
