<LindaR> i finally found the tiles from last time at Home Depot, had to check about 4 before i found one which carried them

<Kim> i found something else neat at Home Depot

<Kim> little tiny rock shaped tiles made out of the same material

<Kim> they have a flat surface

<Kim> so you can stamp on them

<Kim> I used tiny words from some of my stamp sheets

<Kim> and gave a set to a friend for her birthday in a drawstring bag

<labelle> what is special about these tiles?

<Kim> they are unglazed so they stamp really well without smearing

<labelle> do they have to be made of anything special?

<LindaR> they're an unpolished stone, so you can stamp

<LindaR> i think they were a marble, weren't they?

<Kim> the fact that they are just tumbled and not glazed or polished is what makes them so nice IMHO

<labelle> ty

<Kim> yes, they are marble but not shiny and slick like wwhat you're used to

<LindaR> they're very organic, rough and irregular, so they look old and worn

<Kim> they make perfect coasters

<Kim> yes, and the colors are nice too

<Kim> i'll wait another couple of minutes and then i'll start

<LindaR> kim has some great pix and instructions. http://www.animadesigns.com/projects/stampingontileoutput/index.htm

<Seesa> Instructions are good!

<LindaR> those are for the tile stamping

<labelle> ty now I understand better

<Seesa> Wow those are amazing

<Kim> they're really easy too

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/projects/foodcoloringout/index.htm

<Kim> THIS IS THE URL FOR THIS CLASS

<Seesa> Ok who wants what to drink? I am only making ONE trip to the kitchen!

<Kim> ICED CHAMMOMILE FOR ME!

keribou passes salty snack- wanna bet Seesa?

<Sandy> Beautiful samples...

<Seesa> lol

<kristi-afk> lol

<keribou> Kim does the foodcoloring come off the paper and onto your hands when you tocuh these?

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/projects/foodcoloringout/index.htm

<Kim> THIS IS THE URL

<Kim> WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY DYEING THE PAPER, YOU MUST WEAR RUBBER GLOVES IF YOU DON'T WANT GREEN HANDS

<Kim> OR RED

<Kim> OR YELLOW

<Kim> OR BLUE

<Kim> BUT ONCE THE PAPER IS DRY, THE COLOR DOESN'T COME OFF

<keribou> thanks Kim

<LindaR> thanks for that tip, green hands are not good

<Kim> BEFORE WE GET STARTED, THESE INSTRUCTIONS ALONG WITH OTHER PROJECTS ARE ON THE ANIMA PROJECTS PAGE

<Sandy> I can't wait to try the walnut ink after your last class

<Kim> WALNUT INK IS FUN!

<Kim> I USUALLY USE LARGE PAPER THAT I CUT DOWN TO SIZE

<labelle> what weight paper?

<Kim> YOU CAN ALSO USE TAGS OR LIBRARY POCKETS, WHATEVER

<Kim> I'M USING MY FAVORITE RIVES BFK WHICH COMES ONLY IN ONE WEIGHT BUT SEVERAL COLORS

<Kim> THIS TECHNIQUE WILL WORK ON ANYTHING THOUGH, EVEN HANDS

<labelle> can u translate for us paper illiterates?

<Kim> RIVES BFK IS A FRENCH PRINTMAKING PAPER THAT YOU CAN GET IN AN ART SUPPLY STORE

<labelle> ty

<Kim> BUT YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE ANY KIND OF PAPER

<Kim> THIS DYE WILL PERMEATE JUST ABOUT ANYTHING

<Kim> I HAVEN'T TRIED IT ON THE TILES BUT I BET IT WOULD BE GREAT

<Kim> YOU SHOULD HAVE A SHALLOW CONTAINER THAT YOU ARE DOING THIS IN

<Kim> LARGE ENOUGH FOR YOUR PAPER

<Kim> ALWAYS DO A BUNCH OF SHEETS BECAUSE THERE IS PLENTY OF DYE

<Kim> THE BASIC PROCESS IS THAT YOU SQUIRT THE DYE DIRECTLY ONTO THE PAPER

<Kim> AND THEN LAY ANOTHER PIECE OF PAPER ON TOP

<Kim> ADD ANOTHER COLOR

<Kim> LAY ANOTHER PIECE OF PAPER ON TOP

<Kim> ADD ANOTHER COLOR, AND SO ON

<cak> Really squirt, not just drop color on the paper?

<Seesa> How many layers do you do?

<Kim> IT'S FAIRLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW THE COLOR WHEEL IN APPYING THE COLORS

<Kim> AS MANY LAYERS AS I HAVE PAPER--YOU CAN STACK IT UP PRETTY HIGH BUT

<Kim> YOU ARE GOING TO BE MANIPULATING IT SO MAKE IT SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN EASILY WORK WITH

<Kim> ONCE YOU GET TO THE LAST SHEET, I PICK THE WHOLE THING UP AND FLIP IT OVER

<Kim> BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU

<Kim> DO THIS OR

<Kim> THE DYE WILL FLY EVERYWHERE!

[the logger was dropped momentarily here]

<Kim> THAT IS, PICK UP THE SHEET ON THE TOP AND PLACE IT ON THE BOTTOM

<Kim> AND KEEP DOING THAT

<Kim> THE IDEA IS THAT YOU ARE MIXING THE COLORS AROUND SO THAT YOU GET MULTI-COLORED SHEETS

<Kim> YOU CAN ALSO FOLD THE PAPER IN HALF

<Kim> THIS HELPS TO MIX THE COLORS AS WELL. STACK THE FOLDED SHEETS.

<Kim> YOU CAN SEE A LINE DOWN THE CENTER OF SOME OF MY PAPERS WHERE I'VE DONE THIS

<Kim> GEE, YOU ARE ALL SO QUIET. ANY QUESTIONS SO FAR?

<cak> about how much dye do you use per squirt?

<MagiStmpr> This is a great technique.

<labelle> do you use the dye straight from the bottle?

<Kim> I'D SAY ABOUT 3 OR 4 DROPS BUT IT DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF YOUR PAPER

<keribou> you srat with dry paper?

<Kim> I AM TEARING A 22 X 30 SHEET INTO FOURS

<Kim> NO, THE PAPER SHOULD BE WET. I USUALLY RUN IT UNDER THE FAUCET, THEN LAY IT IN THE PAN.

<cak> Have you tried using dye reinkers?

<Kim> NO, FOOD COLORING IS CHEAP AND YOU GET IT AT THE GROCERY STORE

<cak> and probably as light fast as the dye reinkers anyway

<Kim> THIS PAPER IS PRETTY GOOD ALTHOUGH I HAVEN'T STORED IT IN A SUNNY WINDOW

<Kim> I LIKE THE FACT THAT IT IS NONTOXIC

<Kim> I WORK WITH SO MANY TOXIC THINGS, IT'S NICE NOT TO HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT FOR A CHANGE

<cak> that's always a plus in my book

<cak> Earlier you mentioned to be aware of the color wheel when you applied the colors--just to make sure you don't have complementary colors next to each other?

<Kim> SO YOU JUST BASICALLY MANIPULATE THE PAPERS UNTIL THE COLORS ARE MIXED TO YOUR SATISFACTION

<Kim> WELL IN THE FOOD DYE YOU GET THESE COLORS, YELLOW, RED, BLUE AND GREEN

<Kim> THE ONLY REAL NO NO IS RED AND GREEN WHICH MAKES A YUCKY BROWN

<Kim> I USUALLY START WITH YELLOW

<Kim> BUT JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON'T USE RED AFTER GREEN OR GREEN AFTER RED

<cak> gotcha, thanks

<Kim> YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS WHEN YOU ARE MANIPULATING THE PAPERS

<Kim> JUST WHEN YOU INITIALLY APPLY THE INK

<Kim> WHEN THEY'RE MIXED TO YOUR SATISFACTION, SET THEM ASIDE TO DRY

<cak> So the flipping of the stack and then you "shuffle" the papers? (I got dropped for a bit right there)

<Kim> YES

<cak> thanks

<Kim> BUT DON'T OVERDO IT OR THE COLORS WILL BE MUDDY

<Kim> YOU CAN DO SOME INTERESTING THINGS TO THE PAPERS AS THEY ARE DRYING

<cak> do you usually dry them in a stack or laid out unstacked?

<Kim> IF I PUT THEM IN THE OVEN, WHICH I USUALLY DO, YOU CAN STACK THEM

<Kim> OTHERWISE, LAY THEM OUT IN A SINGLE LAYER

<LindaR> does the color bleend through from sheet 1 to sheet 2? is that part of the process?

<Kim> YES, THE COLOR MIGHT BLEED BUT THAT'S USUALLY GOOD

<Kim> I STACK THEM IF I COME ACROSS A SHEET THAT ISN'T REALLY THAT MIXED

<Kim> SO IT CAN GET SOME MORE COLOR ON IT.

<Kim> THE COLOR STOPS MIGRATING WHEN THE PAPER IS DRY

<Kim> THIS WORKS GREAT FOR TAGS AND LIBRARY POCKETS TOO

<LindaR> is the front and back of the sheet colored?

<Kim> IF YOU DRY THIS ON A RACK, THE PAPER WILL PICK UP THE GRID FROM THE RACK

<Kim> YES, BOTH SIDES ARE COLORED MAKING THEM GREAT TO USE FOR BOOKS

<LindaR> great, that's what I was hopeing. i can see a journal made from this

<Kim> IF YOU ARE IMPATIENT LIKE ME, YOU CAN SET YOUR OVEN TO THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/projects/foodcoloringout/index.htm

<Kim> THEN EITHER LAY THE PAPER ON A COOKIE SHEET (THIS IS NONTOXIC)

<Kim> OR DIRECTLY ON YOUR OVEN RACKS

<Kim> MY OVEN'S LOWEST TEMPERATURE IS 175

<kristi> Can you sprinkle the large grain salt and get spots like with watercolors?

<Kim> I HAVEN'T TRIED IT YET

<kristi> ok

<Kim> YOU MIGHT WANT TO PUT THE SALT ON BEFORE THE DYE, THOUGH

<LindaR> interesting idea, i think i've got some of that large grain stuff

<Kim> DEPENDING ON THE PAPER THAT YOU USE, THE DYE SINKS IN PRETTY QUICKLY

<Vyx> argh... we are already drying it, I missed all the important stuff.

<Kim> WATERCOLOR IS STILL KIND OF ON THE SURFACE OF THE PAPER

<Kim> I HAVE COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS HERE

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/projects/foodcoloringout/index.htm

<Vyx> Oh, thank you Kim!

<Kim> YOU'RE WELCOME

<Kim> THIS PAPER AND TAGS, ETC. MAKES A GREAT BACKGROUND FOR STAMPING

<Kim> ANY QUESTIONS ON THE DRYING PROCESS?

<cak> you were saying you could do interesting things (intriguing phrase) with the papers while they dry--what kinds of things?

<keribou> do they buckle as they dry?

<Vyx> Would a wooden clothes dryer rack be any good? to hang the paper on? Or does it need to stay flat?

<Kim> LAYING THEM ON SOMETHING THAT HAS A TEXTURE AND THE TEXTURE WILL BE PICKED UP

<Kim> THE DRYER RACK WOULD BE OKAY.

<Kim> YOUR PAPER MAY HAVE LINES IN IT WHERE THE WOOD POLES ARE

<cak> So they usually aren't wet enough to encourage dye migration on the rack?

<kristi> would you need to protect the floor or would the dye no longer drip?

<C_Lion> i have a couple old window screens for paper drying

<Kim> MY RACK HAS A VARNISH ON IT BUT IF YOURS DOESN'T THE RACK WILL BE DYED

<Kim> WINDOW SCREENS ARE PERFECT

<Kim> A FRIEND DRIED HERS OUTSIDE ON A BRICK WALL AND THE TEXURE OF THE WALL WAS PICKED UP

<Kim> ON THE UNDERSIDE

<C_Lion> as long as they have the plastic screen not the metal]

<Kim> I WOULD USE METAL ALSO

<Kim> IN FACT, I HAVE THESE OLD RUSTY COOKIE SHEETS THAT ARE MY FAVORITE THING TO DRY STUFF IN

<C_Lion> do not pick up the rust?

<Kim> TAGS, ETC. PICK UP SOME OF THE RUST FROM THE SHEETS

<Vyx> Yeah, finally a use for those old icky rusty cookie sheets

<cak> can you encourage "texturizing" by pressing it down on the texture surface?

<Kim> YES, BUT THAT MAKES IT MORE INTERESTING

<Kim> I HAVEN'T TRIED THAT

<C_Lion> ahhh, i am usually marbling and do not want rust

<cak> (I was thinking the screen texture would be nice)

<Kim> I THINK IT WOULD WORK AS LONG AS THE TEXTURE ISN'T TOO FINE

<Kim> IF YOU HAD A REALLY FINE SCREEN, IT MAY NOT WORK

<cak> makes sense

<Kim> MY PAPER GETS THE GRID FROM THE OVEN RACKS AND I LIKE THE WAY IT LOOKS

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/projects/foodcoloringout/pages/fc9l.htm

<Kim> TAKE A LOOK AT THIS SAMPLE--THIS IS VERY SUBTLE THOUGH

<C_Lion> but those plastic grids for big florescent lights would be cool

<Kim> YES, THEY WOULD

<cak> you were saying you could do interesting things with the papers while they dry--what kinds of things so you like to do besides the adding of texture?

<Kim> THAT'S BASICALLY IT, ADDING TEXTURE

<cak> that's enough!

<Kim> ALL KINDS OF TEXTURES, LET YOUR IMAGINATION BE YOUR GUIDE

<Kim> IF YOU'RE READY TO MOVE ON, I CAN SHOW YOU A LIBRARY POCKET BOOK

<Kim> MADE WITH FOOD COLORING DYED LIBRARY POCKETS

<LindaR> can i ask a question?

<Kim> YES

<LindaR> in fc9a you say flip tha stack over. are you now going to add dye drops to the other side of the paper?

<Kim> YES, BECAUSE REMEMBER YOU JUST ADDED ONE COLOR PER SHEET THE FIRST TIME

<LindaR> so you put some colors on side a and some on side b

<Kim> ALTHOUGH I HAVE ALSO DONE IT WITH MORE THAN ONE COLOR AT A TIME

<Kim> YES

<LindaR> ok, ty

<Kim> AND THEN YOU MANIPULATE THEM TO MIX THE COLORS EVEN MORE

<Kim> THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE FINAL PAPER WILL DEPEND UPON THE PAPER THAT YOU USE

<cak> (no wonder you cut the parent sheets down!)

<Kim> RIVES LOOKS BRIGHT WHEN WET BUT IT REALLY IS MORE MUTED WHEN DRY

<Kim> YES, YOU WANT THE PAPER TO BE A SIZE THAT ISN'T UNWIELDY TO MANIPULATE

<Kim> I DON'T HAVE A PAN BIG ENOUGH FOR PARENT SHEETS!!!

<cak> (or arms either I suspect. I know I don't)

<Kim> AND I WOULD NEED A PARTNER TO HELP ME TURN THE SHEETS

<Kim> I DO HAVE ARMS

<cak> lol

<Kim> BUT THEY'RE NOT THAT LONG

<Kim> READY TO SEE THE BOOK?

<cak> yep

<stampink> can

<stampink> oops, can't wait

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/librarypocketbook/librarypocketbook.htm

<Kim> GO HERE

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/librarypocketbook/librarypocketbook.htm

<cak> tres cool Kim

<LindaR> ohhhhh, kewl

<Kim> FOR THE STEP BY STEP GO HERE

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/librarypocketbook/stepbystep.htm

<Kim> THERE ARE MORE PICTURES ON THIS ONE

<Kim> THE DYEING PROCESS IS THE SAME FOR THE POCKETS

<Kim> I USUALLY HAVE LITTLE STACKS OF THEM IN MY TRAY

<Kim> THAT I SHUFFLE AND FLIP AROUND

<Kim> DID YOU GET THE SECOND URL WITH THE PICTURES

<LindaR> yes, i'm there

<MagiStmpr> yep

<cak> yep, we're just engrossed in them

<Kim> IT WAS HARD TAKING THE PHOTOS WHILE HOLDING THE BOOK IN THE OTHER HAND, LOL

<cak> lol (and you said your arms weren't that long--)

<Vyx> Wow!

<cak> I love the fact that this is non-sewn *and* non-adhesive. Not too many bindings you can say that about

<Vyx> Can you actually buy those pocket thingies? Or do you have to know someone who works at the library? :)

<Kim> YES I SELL THEM.

<Kim> PACK OF 10 FOR $1.00

<Kim> THE GREAT THING IS THAT YOU CAN CUT HOLES IN THE POCKETS AND INSERT STUFF

<cak> very nice! with the computers you don't see very many of them

<Kim> EMBELLISH TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT

<LindaR> i use them in altered books, they're a great addition

<Kim> I'VE ADDED ONE OF THESE LITTLE LIBRARY POCKET BOOKS TO AN ALTERED BOOK

<Kim> THEY ARE SIMPLE TO MAKE

<Kim> YOU CAN ADD DECORATIVE FIBERS TO THEM ALSO

<cak> but very handy

<Kim> YES VERY

<LindaR> looks like your sample used 10 pockets, so they are a good value too.

<Kim> YOU CAN MAKE THEM ANY SIZE YOU WANT TO.

<Kim> I'VE MADE THEM WITH FAR FEWER POCKETS SOMETIMES

<Kim> YOU COULD ALSO SEW A LITTLE BOOK IN THE FOLD

<Kim> AND USE THESE AS THE "COVERS"

<Kim> THEY COME PLAIN AND WITH THE LINES

<Kim> YOU COULD ALSO ADD POPUPS TO THE FOLDS

<cak> I was just pondering that Kim--pop-ups

<Kim> THEY MAKE A REALLY CUTE BOOK

<Kim> YOU CAN TUCK ALL SORTS OF THINGS INTO THE POCKETS, TOO

<Kim> FORTUNES, LITTLE NOTES, ETC.

<Kim> ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?

<Seesa> Nope it looks great!

<Vyx> Is it better to oven dry the paper, for heat setting the dye?

<cak> I could see telling the story of a relationship with this, tucking in ephemera and writing on the pages you bind in betweenthe pockets

<Kim> OVEN DRYING IS NOT REQUIRED. ONCE THE PAPER DRIES, THE DYE IS "IN THERE"

<Kim> YOU MAY WANT TO IRON IT IF THE PAPER ISN'T FLAT ENOUGH FOR YOUR TASTE

<Kim> AFTER IT'S DRY

<Kim> I HAVE ONE MORE THING TO SHOW YOU

<LindaR> i've got a new box of dye and just found some old watercolor paper, i'm ready to give this a try

<Kim> GO FOR IT!

<Kim> LET ME KNOW HOW IT TURNS OUT!

<LindaR> will do!

<Kim> THE FINAL THING IS A PROJECT I'M WORKING ON -- IT'S NOT FINISHED

<LindaR> ohhh, a sneak peak

<cak brightens with anticipation

<Kim> BUT IT WILL SHOW YOU A FOOD COLORING DYED TAG THAT I'VE STAMPED ON WITH DUOTONES

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/faith.jpg

<Kim> GO HERE

<Kim> http://www.animadesigns.com/faith.jpg

<Kim> HI LUNI, WE'RE JUST FINISHING UP

<LuniLadi> Hi Kim!...

<LuniLadi> drat...just got home from work :(

<cak> Very cool Kim! Thanks for letting us sneak a peek!

<Kim> COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ON MY WEBSITE

<LuniLadi> ty

<Kim> AND I'D BE HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS

<labelle> Wow, that faith is simply awesome -

<Kim> THANKS

<Seesa> Ohh yeah thats beautiful

<Kim> THANKS!

<labelle> what is the container?

<LindaR> finally came up. vrey nice kim, can't wait to see the completed piece

<Kim> FOR $1.00

<labelle> It is perfect!

<Kim> IT'S JUST A TAD DEEPER THAN A FRAME

<LindaR> thanks kim, great class and fantastic instructions

<Kim> DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT PAPER DYEING OR THE POCKET BOOK?

<Kim> THANKS, LINDA

<Seesa> Nope it looks fairly easy and something even i can try

<cak> I might after I actually do this! Will you be teaching this again sometime?

<labelle> I'm sure I will, but can't think of them now, but will email you if I run into a "snag"

<Kim> FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME

<Kim> BUT I'M SURE YOU WON'T HAVE PROBLEMS

<labelle> ha ha

<Kim> NO PLAN TO TEACH THIS AGAIN SOON

<Kim> BUT THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ON MY WEBSITE

<Kim> WWW.ANIMADESIGNS.COM

<Kim> FOLLOW THE LINKS FOR PROJECTS

<Kim> THERE ARE OTHER PROJECTS THERE TOO!

<Vyx> Thanks for a great class, Kim! Sorry I was so late!

<cak> I guess we'll just have to bug you individually then! (but it does seem nice and straightforward)

<Kim> THANK YOU ALL, YOU'VE BEEN GREAT BUT SO QUIET!

<labelle> awed

<Seesa> Thanks Kim I learned something Cool to try (and somewhat messy which is always fun)

<Kim> MORE LIKE BEATEN INTO SUBMISSION

<Kim> IT CAN BE MESSY

<Sandy> Love your classes
