<MsProfAFK> I already have a big order in for Redstick.. .is she giving away stuff? lol
<CindyC> ty
<CindyC> hey red
<Redstick> Hey ya'll!
<deb> hi candace
<MsProfAFK> Hey Red!
<Redstick> Sorry bout that.....teenager on the phone!
<stubby> hey red
<deb> heh
<Redstick> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> How you all are?
<Scout> anticipating fun
* Redstick IS GONNA WAIT TIL FOLKS FILTER IN BEFORE GETTING STARTED GOOD
<Redstick> HOW MANY OF YOU USE COLORED PENCILS WITH YOUR STAMPED IMAGES?
<MsProfAFK> I'm good, Red... LOVE the class pics! I use them.
* deb raises hand
<Jambalaya> if anyone left their bodies in rubberclassroom, please go back and close out of there
<Ritz> me too
<Redstick> GREAT!!
<cak> not me, I kinda scared of 'em
* MsProfAFK raises hand and yells "OOOH OOOH Me Mistah Kottah!"
<Judy> use them occasionally
<Redstick> ALOT OF PEOPLE GET INTIMIDATED BY THEM, CAK
<Judy> not good at it
<MsProfAFK> red... since we're waiting to start, may I share ane xperience about choosing the pencils?
<Redstick> BECAUSE THEY TAKE A LITTLE WORK...YOU CAN'T JUST "COLOR" WWITH THEM
<MsProfAFK> buying them, I mean?
<Redstick> SURE MSpROF
<MsProfAFK> I went to HObby Lobby when they had 50% off pencil sets, and I got the Prismacolor. Well, they were fun, but...... the points kept breaking. I would sharpen, they would break. I bought new sharpener, they would break.
<MomCat> I uwe colored pencils
<MsProfAFK> No matter what I did, they broke. And, I never got very pleasing results.
<MsProfAFK> I finally wandered into an art store near campus, and talked to the salesman. He said that Prisma color was recently (in the last few years) bougth out or changed ownership or something
<tj> Never tried 'em
<Kriztina> i just stick with crayolas
<MsProfAFK> And, he had seen the quality go down substantially. He said they frequently found sets where all the leads in them were broken. They were dropped
<Scout> I can't sharpen mine well either.
<MsProfAFK> He let me play with different brands, until I found one that felt "right." So, the point of this story is that if at first you don't succeed, first buy a new sharpener, if that doesn't work, you might need to upgrade your pencils
<Scout> But I've had them for 5 years already.
<MsProfAFK> The set I got was about $40, and had 1/2 as many colors, but the results are great, and so I get MORE out of fewer pencils
<MsProfAFK> thanks Red.. <end of story>
<stampverb> is there a url tonight?
<Redstick> tHAT'S TRUE MSPROF...AND IT ALSO DEPENDS ON WHO YOU ARE TALKING TO
<deb> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<stampverb> ty
<MsProfAFK> Crayola has better sets than they used to, with a reasonable color palette.
<Redstick> SOME PEOPLE LIKE A HARDER PENCIL
<MsProfAFK> Roseart does, too. Good places to start experimenting with them.
<cak> I'd heard that MsProf--disappointing isn't it? which brand did you end up with?
<MsProfAFK> Uh... dang... hang on.... lemme go look
<Redstick> OTHER PEOPLE LIKE A SOFTER PENCIL
<Redstick> PRISMACOLORS DON'T HOLD A POINT WORTH A DANG....BUT
<cindycbrb> that's for sure
<Redstick> YOU DON'T ALWAYS WANT A POINTED PENCIL
* cindycbrb loves her prisma though
<Redstick> I RARELY USE A PENCIL WITH A FINE POINT
<MsProfAFK> Faber Castell Polychromos.... set of 60 was about $35, actually, now that I think about it. BUt that was some kind of special deal at a campus art store. If anybody wanted a set like that, I would be glad to pick them up for you and you could reimburse me. If they still carry them.
<lynne> I love my Prismas too
<MsProfAFK> Well, they are in all the stores, so they MUST be pretty popular. lol BUt, I had no luck with them
<Jambalaya> ok y'all lets settle down and let Red teach
<cak> what is your preference now Redstick?
<Redstick> WHEN I ***HAVE** TO SHARPEN THEM, I ALWAYS GO AHEAD AND BREAK THE POINT OFF...THEN SCRIBBLE ABIT UNTIL IT GETS ABIT ROUNDER
<cak> lol--honing of your tool!
<Redstick> I STILL USE PRISMACOLORS, BUT I'VE HAD THIS SET FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS
<Redstick> I REPLACE COLORS AS THEY GO
<Redstick> OK.....
<Redstick> THE THINGS I RECOMMEND HAVING AROUND WHEN YOU WORK WITH COLORED PENCIL ARE
<Redstick> PENCILS, OBVIOUSLY
<Redstick> A TORTILLION ( OR PAPER STUB)
<Redstick> A SOFT BRUSH LIKE A MAKEUP BRUSH
<Redstick> AND A LITTLE SQUARE OF WAX PAPER
<Redstick> YOU WANT TO STAMP WITH A NON SMUDGE/WATERPROOF INK
<Redstick> AND MAKE SURE TO LET IT DRY REAL GOOD BEFORE YOU START COLORING
<MsProfAFK> Red.. can you make your own tortillion's? I think you can, but I am not sure if there's a special kind of paper you use. do you buy or make your's?
* deb has never figured out how to use a stub
<Redstick> I BUT THEM PROF...THEY AREN'T MUCH
<MsProfAFK> k, thanks
<labelle> do you always stamp in black?
<MsProfAFK> never priced them
<Redstick> BUT YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE A Q TIP THAT YOU KINDA SMOOSH DOWN
<Redstick> NOT ALWAYS LABELLE....THAT'S ONE OF THE PROJECTS IN TOMORROW'S CLASS...PART TWO
<labelle> aha, have to come back to learn about that, huh?
<LindaR> thisis a 2 day class?
<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> I'VE USED THE SAME IMAGE FOR ALL THE SAMPLES TONIGHT
<deb> today is Part 1
<Redstick> THE FIRST ONE STAMPED ON WHITE PAPER
<Redstick> PEOPLE ARE EASY, CAUSE YOU START WITH SKIN
<Redstick> OTHERWISE, START WITH THE LIGHTEST AREAS FIRST
<Redstick> THE PRIMARY TRICK TO COLORED PENCIL IS BUILDING UP LIGHT LAYERS OF COLOR
<Redstick> SO INB THE FIRST ILLUSTRATION, YOU SEE A VERY FAINT LAYER OF FLESHTONE ON HER SKIN AREAS
<Redstick> I LIKE TO USE A SLIGHTLY BLUNT POINT AN WORK IN LITTLE CIRCLES AT FIRST
<Redstick> THAT WAY THERE ARE NO PENCIL LINES
<Redstick> IF YOU ARE USING A HARDER PENCIL, COLOR WITH THE SIDE INSTEAD OF THE POINT
<Redstick> AFTER YOU LAY DOWN THE FIRST FAINT LAYER, THEN COME BACK WITH HIGHIGHTS AND CONTOURS
<Redstick> AGAIN, COLORING VERY LIGHTLY
<Redstick> NOW...ALOT OF PEOPLE GET CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE TO HIGHLIGHT AND WHERE TO CONTOUR
<Redstick> CONTOUR ON THE AREAS THAT WOULD BE IN SHADOW (DARKER TONES) AND HIGHLIGHT AREAS THAT WOULD BE IN THE LIGHT (CLOSER TO YOU)
<Redstick> KEEP WORKING WITH LIGHT LAYERS...GOING BACK OVER WITH THE ORIGINAL COLOR (FLESH) AND THEN A LAYER OF HIGHLIGHT AND CONTOUR
<Redstick> YOU CAN USE THE TORTILLION TO BLEND THE COLORS AFTER THEY START TO BUILD UP
<Redstick> ALSO, YOU WILL WANT TO USE THE SOFT BRUSH TO BRUSH AWAY THE FLAKES OF COLOR THAT WILL OCCUR AFTER YOU'VE STARTED TO GET SEVERAL LAYERS
<Redstick> DON
<Redstick> DON'T USE YOUR HAND....THAT MIGHT SMEAR
<MomCat> Red, Prisma has a colorless blender pencil, have you tried it?
<cak> you mean that advise about add a little at a time 'cause it's hard to take it back is true?
<Redstick> YES, MOMCAT...IT WORKS, BUT I STILL USE MY TORTILLION MORE
<Redstick> EXACTLY CAK
<MomCat> k, thanks
<Redstick> SO...ONCE YOU HAVE THE SKIN LIKE YOU WANT, THEN MOVE ONTO THE HAIR..
<Redstick> YOU CAN USE MORE THAN TWO COLORS, BUT TWO VALUES OF A SIMILAR COLOR ARE REALLY ENOUGH
<Redstick> THE HAIR IS PRETTY EASY....PREDOMINANT COLOR AND A HIGHLIGHT COLOR
<Redstick> JUST LIKE REAL HAIR
<Redstick> AGAIN, LIGHT LAYERS BUILDING UP
<Redstick> THE WINGS ON THE WHITE SAMPLE WERE FUN
<Redstick> THE COLORS ARE LAYERED OVER EACH OTHER WHERE THEY MEET
<cak> they're beautiful. The coloring is so subtle
<Redstick> THIS NEXT BIT IS ABOUT COLOR PALETTES
<Redstick> SOMETIMES, WE WANT TO USE EVERY COLOR THAT WE HAVE
<cak> lol
<Redstick> AND IT WINDS UP LOOKING ACKWARD...
<Redstick> IF YOU STICK WITH A SIMPLE PALETTE YOU WILL USUALLY HAVE MUCH PRETTIER RESULTS
* MsProfAFK nods head and says "Uhuh... threw a lot of images in the trash before I learned that lesson"
<Redstick> JUST REMEMBER AS YOU MOVE FROM ONE PART TO THE NEXT...ONE COLOR, PLUS A LIGHTER OR DARKER VALUE OF THE SAME OR SIMILAR COLOR
<Redstick> ON THE FIRST ONE, I ACTUALLY USED THE BLUE AND THE LILAC FROM HER WINGS IN THE FABRIC
<Redstick> PRETTY MUCH THE SAME VALUE (DARKNESS/LIGHTNESS)
<Redstick> IT DOESN'T *ALL* HAVE TO BE CONTOURED
<Redstick> THE BUTTERFLIES ARE THE SAME COLORS TOO
<stubby> red this is probably a dumb question, but do you mix pencil colors from different companies to get the effect you want or are they not compatible
<Redstick> THE LAST THING IS SDPMETHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY
<Redstick> YOU CERTAINLY CAN STUBBY!
<stubby> ty
<Redstick> IN FACT, I USE THREE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF PENCILS
<Redstick> SOME ARE SOFTER, SOME ARE HARDER WHICH GIVES YOU DARKER COLOR
<stubby> we think pencil colors are just pencil colors but you are proving that not to be true
<Redstick> THE LAST THING I DID TO THIS IMAGE ON WHITE WAS TO LIGHTLY OUTLINE IT IN A SOFT GRAY
<cak> that gives it such dimension!
<Redstick> IT GIVES IT ABIT MORE DEPTH
<Redstick> ONCE YOU GET SOME CONTROL OVER USING PENCIL ON WHITE PAPER
<cak> how did you get the soft edge to that gray?
<Redstick> THEN YOU NEED TO TRY IT ON OTHER COLORS!
<Redstick> THAT'S PRISMACOLOR CAK....THEY ARE VERY SOFT
<cak> so soft pencil, light touch will do it?
<Redstick> EXACTLY
<Redstick> NOW...ON THE TAN C/S I USED THE SAME INK
<Redstick> BUT I USED ALOT MORE HIGHLIGHT (WHITE) AND CONTOUR (PINIKISH)
<Redstick> FOR HER SKIN
<Redstick> SINCE SKIN IS KINDA TAN...YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S WELL DEFINED FROM THE BACKGROUND COLOR
<Redstick> AND DARK COLORS FOR THE REST WORK VERY NICELY
<Redstick> EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT COLORS OF C/S
<Redstick> YOU CAN GET SOME REALLY NEAT EFFECTS
<Redstick> LAST YEAR I DID MY CHRISTMAS CARDS ON RED AND GREEN
<Redstick> WITH COLORED PENCIL
<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<cak> so the color of the cardstock will influence the color of the penciling?
<Redstick> THE HEAVY LAYERS OF PENCIL SHOW UP REALLY NICE ON THE DARKER COLORS!
<Redstick> IT CERTAINLY WILL CAK..
<cak> I always think of them as really opaque--this is good to know
<Redstick> BUT YOU CAN DO SOME REALLY UNUSUAL THINGS BY LAYERING PENCIL OVER COLORED C/S
<Redstick> THE LAST SAMPLE WAS THE MOST FUN FOR ME AND THE MOST CHALLENGE
<Redstick> LET ME STOP A MINUTE HERE THOUGH AND DISCUSS TEXTURE
<Redstick> FOR STRAIGHT PENCIL WORK, I PREFER A BRISTOL VELLUM
<Redstick> IT'S NOT HIGHLY TEXTURED, BUT HAS A GOOD "TOOTH"
<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> COATED PAPERS HAVE NO TOOTH WHATSOEVER
<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> THAT'S WHY IT'S HARD TO USE COLORED PENCIL ON GLOSSY PAPER
<Redstick> NOW...YOU *CAN* USE PENCIL ON LINEN AND LAID TEXTURED PAPERS
<Redstick> DOES EVERYONE UNDERSTAND PAPER TEXTURE OR HAVE I LOST YOU?
<cak> (talk about tooth)
<Judy> still with you
<Redstick> TOOTH IS THE LITTLE INVISIBLE BUMPS THAT HELP HOLD THE COLORED PENCIL
<Redstick> YOU CAN'T ALWAYS SEE THEM, BUT YOU CAN USUALLY FEEL THEM
<Redstick> A LAID OR LINEN TEXTURE HAS A VERY PROMINENT TOOTH THAT IS VISIBLE AND HAS A PATTERN
<cak> you can always try a swipe of pencil to check it out too
<Redstick> BRISTOL VELLUM HAS AN EVENLY DITRIBUTED TOOTH....NO PATTERN AND ALMOST SMOOTH TO THE TOUCH
<Redstick> SO...
<Redstick> THIS BRINGS ME TO THE MARBLED PAPER
<MomCat> Red, Birstol Vellum
<MomCat> is not what we usually think of as Vellum is it?
<Redstick> NO, IT'S NOT MOMCAT...THANKS FOR BRINGING THAT UP
<Judy> or Bristol board?
<Redstick> VELLUM WAS ORIGINALLY MADE FROM ANIMAL SKIN
<Redstick> AND WAS RATHER TRANSLUCENT LIKE WHAT WE CALL TODAY "VELLUM"
<Redstick> BUT THE ACTUAL CONTEXT OF THE WORD VELLUM WAS THE FINISH THAT ALLOWED INKS AND PAINTS TO STICK
<Redstick> BRISTOL BOARD COMES IN DIFFERENT FINISHES JUDY
<Redstick> SMOOTH, ROUGH AND VELLUM
<Judy> oh - ok, ty
<Redstick> WHEN I STARTED STAMPING, THERE WEREN'T ALOT OF CARDSTOCKS AROUND
<Redstick> SO I BOUGHT BIG PADS OF BRISTOL VELLUM FROM THE ART STORE AND CUT THEM INTO CARD SIZE
<Redstick> AND I'VE ALWAYS PREFERRED THAT SURFACE TO STAMP AND COLOR ON
<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> NOW CARDSTOCK COMES IN A VELLUM FINISH TOO AND IT'S EXCELLENT FOR COLORED PENCIL
<Redstick> THE MARBLED PAPER IN THE THIRD SAMPLE IS ACTUALLY MADE FROM CONSTRUCTION PAPER
<Redstick> SO IT HAS A ROUGHER TEXTURE THAN VELLUM
<Redstick> BUT SINCE THE MARBLING ITSELF ISN'T RAISED, IT WORKED NICELY WITH PENCIL
<Redstick> OTHER THAN PAINT, PENCIL IS ABOUT THE OONLY THING THAT WILL COVER A VAREIGATED COLOR BACKGROUND
<Redstick> AND THIS PARTICULAR MARBLED PATTERN WORKED VERY WELL
<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/class1030/class1030.htm
<Redstick> I WAS EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS
<Jambalaya> i would have never guessed that was construction paper
<cak> it has a really strong coloring. I'm surprised it didn't have more of an effect on the penciling
<Redstick> EVEN THOUGH THE PENCIL DIDN'T COVER THE BACKGROUND COLORS COMPLETELY, IT STILL HAS A NICE ORGANIC FEEL TO IT
<Redstick> SO...FOLKS....THE SECRET IS LAYERS.....BUILDING UP LIGHT LAYERS UNTIL YOU HAVE THE COLOR DEPTH THAT YOU WANT
<cak> it sounds so easy, but, but...
<Redstick> BUT?
* Redstick GRINS
<Judy> would never have even tried to color that paper!
<cak> I have my doubts about how well I can carry this off!
<Redstick> STICK WITH A SIMPLE COLOR PALETTE
<cak> I guess it's like drawing--practice, practice, practice
<Redstick> START WITH THE LIGHTEST AREAS FIRST
<Redstick> TOMORROW (IF I GET A CHANCE TO PLAY DURING THE DAY)
<cak> I may need to borrow someone's idea of putting a ball where the sun/light is as a reminder of where the lights and darks go
<labelle> that is where a good artist's eye is essential - I can't tell what is supposed to be close to me and what is to be far sway
<Redstick> WE'LL GET INTO SOME OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH COLORED PENCILS
<cak> cool. I may have to find mine!
<Redstick> PERSPECTIVE IS ABIT TRICKY
<labelle> ty, i sure find it is
<Redstick> BUT IF YOU PRETEND TO BE THE SUN
<Scout> Anyone have a recommendation as to what brand sharpener works best?
<Redstick> THEN IT IS EASIER TO TELL WHAT SHOULD BE IN SHADOW AND WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE LIGHT
<deb> excellent class Candace
<Redstick> AN ELECTRIC SHARPENER IS BEST
<labelle> ty again. I'll have to try that
<deb> I need t omake an announcement
<Redstick> BUT BESIDES THAT USE ONE WITH A STEEL CUTTING BLADE
<Scout> Those always scare me as it goes so fast I always think it will take my finger with it.
<Redstick> THANKS, DEB!
<deb> We have an unscheduled social hour next in #bearrubber room
<deb> so hopefully you can all hang around for it
<labelle> oh my, its too late for me
<stubby> red that was excellent
<Judy> great class, red!
<cak> Yes, thank you Redstick. Your coloring is fabulous. thanks for sharing with us (I have my hopes for my own coloring now)
<Redstick> TYTY
<Jambalaya> a wonderful class red
<stubby> you are so good with those pencils
<MomCat> Great class, thanks
<Scout> if my bottom doesn't completely go to sleep sitting this long.
<Scout> Thanks, Red, that was a terrific class.
<Redstick> THE IMAGE, BTW IS FROM THE NEW SHEETS BY LEE SEED
<Judy> it's beautiful!
<labelle> thanks again. I hope I can make it back tomorrow for the second part - have a lot to learn
<cak> when is your next class Redstick? Tomorrow?
<Redstick> TOMORROW....SAME TIME, SAME STATION
<cak> cool, I'll be here
<Judy> will be here!
<Jambalaya> tomorrow night same time time same place
<MomCat> Yay!
<deb> next event #bearrubber
<Redstick> YA'LL GO SOCIALIZE!
<tj> Thank you Red and for your pretty samples too!
<Redstick> See ya'll tomorrow
<CindyC> darn i missed her!
