<stubby> Hi all

<Jambalaya> hi monica

<cak> Hi

<BlackCats> hi, all

<NiceProf> hi all!

<Jambalaya> hiya cak

<Jambalaya> ok, gang's all here but the teacher<g>

<Scout> Hi, Andy, got the winner grab bag, the freebies and my order yesterday. great stamps. Gonna have loads of fun with those. Thank you again.

<Jambalaya> yay janet!!!

<Judy> there she is

<cak> And here's teacher!

<Vyx> yay we got a Teacher!

<Janet> Big apologies. I'm late. Mike was trying to HELP me get my page done in time.

<stubby> you are welcome

<Janet> (can I kill him now or do I have to wait?)

<Vyx> lol

<cak> lol

<Judy> wait til after class

<Janet> LOL

<stubby> wait we need you here now

<cak> well, you could feel very virtuous by not procrastinating

* NiceProf Hurls apple at the teacher

<Janet> Needless to say, I have no page.<g> But I have some pics

<NiceProf> wait, that's GIVE apple

<Janet> YUM, apple! so considerate of you to bake it for me

<NiceProf> yeah... that's just the kinda' chick I am. ARguin' one day, tossing apples the next

<Scout> Does Mike have the skill to really help you on your page or is he just guessing?

<Janet> WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING LATELY IS COVERING GLASS ORNAMENTS WITH POLYMER CLAY

<Jambalaya> lol, mike can barely turn puter on<g>

<Janet> NO, HE DECIDED HE NEEDED TO TAKE PICS OF THE ORNAMENTS WITH HIS CELL PHONE.

<cak> (iow, play with his new toy?)

<Janet> BUT HE HAD TO BE TALKING TO ME THE WHOLE TIME, HENCE i COULDN'T EVEN TYPE A WHOLE WORD WITHOUT WHATEVER HE WAS SAYING CROPPING UP IN THERE

<Janet> (IOW, EXACTLY)

<Vyx> lol

<Scout> Oh, that sounds very familiar!

<Janet> SO FOR A COUPLE OF NOT SO GOOD PICS, LOOK AT http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/ornaments.jpg

<Janet> and (I think) http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/ornaments2.jpg

<Janet> and now you know how good (bad) a cell phone takes pics

<Janet> then again, they are both better than my attempt at scanning them

<Vyx> Nice ornaments, tho.

* Judy wasn't going to say it

<Janet> it's been too hot to turn on the oven, so they aren't even baked

<Jambalaya> ya, you can tell what they look like

<Janet> sorta kinda, I should upload my scan<g>

<Vyx> I did ornaments a couple years ago. It's a good way to use up all the old glass balls you have that the color is flaking out of.

<Janet> it sure is!

<Raven> aha! They look MUCH better when I remember to shut off my web acceleration! LOL!

<Janet> and the clay makes them pretty sturdy

<cak> they're beautiful, even with the crummy photography

<BlackCats> yes, they are

<Janet> that's what these look like! that we're looking at them with web acceleration

<Janet> ANYWAY, THE BIG AH HA OF THE CLASS IS COVER YOUR OLD GLASS ORNAMENTS (OR BUY NEW ONES TO COVER) WITH POLYMER CLAY

<Janet> AND TO FILL THE REST OF THE HOUR, I'LL TELL YOU HOW TO MAKE TWO OF THE CANES I WAS USING TO COVER THESE.<G>

<Raven> ya know... that really IS an AHA! since I've never given that a thought

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/canes.jpg

<Vyx> Aha! Janet learned how to make a feather cane!

<Janet> SOME OF Y'ALL WERE AROUND WHEN I WAS COVERING THE PENS, REMEMBER THE VAN GOGH PENS?

<Raven> and if I don't happen to have any old balls... (never mind that comment) I can make christmas balls outta the blown eggs I never got around to covering for Easter

<Judy> yep

<Janet> THE ORANGE SUNBURST LOOKING ONE IS THE SAME CANE, DONE IN RED AND COPPER AND YELLOW AND GOLG

<Janet> OH YEAH, RAVEN, THAT WORKS.<G>

<Judy> that's beautious, Janet

<Vyx> I think I =tossed= all the old glass balls I was saving. Dammit.

<Janet> IT IS PRETTY EASY, EXCEPT FOR THE ROLLING IT TOGETHER PART<G>

<NiceProf> Carol Duval says you should take the old glass balls and turn them into clear ornaments by soaking off the color from the inside. Carol Duvall apparently has a staff of assistants who do this for her, because I was NEVER able to get it to work. I recommend covering from the OUTSIDE, like Janet is doing.

<Janet> NO KIDDING, I NEVER COULD GET ALL THE OLD PAINT OFF EITHER.

<Vyx> lol

<Janet> FEATHER CANES AND A CANE i KNOW HAS A REAL NAME BUT I DON'T KNOW THE REAL NAME CANE

<Vyx> I need an ornament for stamp club later this month. They are only doing ONE swap item per person, so I'm gonna go.

<stampverb> Vyx will know

<Janet> SORT OF A MODIFIED IKAT

<Janet> VYX, WHAT'S THE NAME OF THIS STARRY NIGHT LOOKING CANE?

<Janet> (VYX AND VERB BOTH KNOW TONS MORE ABOUT POLYCLAY THAN I DO)

<Vyx> which one?

<stampverb> I can't see the details on my display

<Janet> THE COPPER, RED, YELLOW ONE, THE ONE ON THE LEFT

<Janet> ANYWAY, THIS IS NOT NOT NOT ORIGINAL WITH ME!

<Janet> BUT I STEAL IDEAS LIKE A CHAMP.<G>

<Vyx> I have no idea what that's called. It looks like my chrysanthemum cane before I make the petals.

<Janet> AT SOME POINT IN MY LIFE i SAW THIS SOMEWHERE, OKAY?

<cak> your originality is using old ideas in new ways (i.e., you're original)

<Janet> AND HOW YOU MAKE IT...

<stampverb> jelly roll with assorted ingredients

<Raven> okay! LOL!

<Janet> MAKE A SKINNER BLEND, EVERYBODY KNOWS ABOUT THAT?

<Janet> (OH PLEASE SAY YES)

<Raven> cinnamon raisin bun

<stampverb> yep

<Judy> yes

<Raven> yesh

<Janet> WHEW

<cak> I do (never done it though)

<Jambalaya> um

* Raven slaps a hand over Jams mouth

<Janet> GOOD. MAKE A SKINNER BLEND, AND YOU KNOW HOW YOU USUALLY MAKE THE PLUG OF IT (ROLL IT UP INTO A LOG) WITH THE LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE AND THE DARK ON THE OUTSIDE?

<BlackCats> never had it turn out the way it looks on CD

<Jambalaya> rofl

<Janet> THIS TIME ROLL IT SIDEWAYS, SO THE BOTTOM OF THE PLUG IS DARK AND THE TOP IS LIGHT AND IT'S A NICE GRADIENT PLUG

<Jambalaya> me either, only tried it once though

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/canes.jpg YAMA

<Janet> IF YA KEEP FOLDING AND ROLLING IT THROUGH, EVENTUALLY YOU'LL GET A BEAUTIFUL GRADIENT, I PROMISE YOU WILL CUZ I CAN

* yamamama sits next to raven and asks her if she made her a bowling ball thingy yet?

<yamamama> ty janet

<Janet> AND DECIDE WHAT COLOR YOU WANT FOR YOUR BASE COLOR. IN MY EXAMPLE I USED COPPER

* Raven sputters and blushes

<Janet> AND MY BLEND WAS YELLOW TO ORANGE TO MAGENTA CLAY

<Janet> SO FAR THIS IS LIKE A FEATHER CANE, SO REMEMBER THESE STEPS<G>

<cak> (we ain't gonna go over 'em again?)

<Judy> cak, will you post this soon, so we don't have to remember the steps?

<Janet> (NOT UNLESS I HAVE TO<G>)

<Janet> SKINNER BLEND, MAKE PLUG VERTICALLY GRADIENT

<cak> I'll do my best Judy!

<Judy> ty

<Janet> NOW YA SMASH THE PLUG ON ITS SIDE AND RUN IT THROUGH THE PASTA MAKER ON THICKEST SETTING SO YOU GET A LONG THIN LINGUINI OF CLAY

<Janet> ONLY NOT THAT THIN, PROBABLY 3-4"

<Janet> WIDE

<Janet> YOU ALSO RUN YOUR SOLID BASE COLOR THROUGH, ON A MID-SETTING.

<Janet> THEN LAY THE TWO ON TOP OF EACH OTHER...

<cak> does the gradient run from top to bottom or side to side on your linguini?

<Janet> (SO FAR THIS IS JUST LIKE FEATHER CANE)...

<Janet> BUT WE DEPART FROM THAT HERE... (GRADIENT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM OF THE LINGUINI)

<Janet> CALL IT A LASAGNA NOODLE

<Janet> IT'S MORE THAT SIZE

<cak> gotcha

<cak> (thanks)

<Janet> LAY THE BASE COLOR LASAGNA NOODLE (THAT IS PROBABLY 3' LONG) ON YOUR DESK, THEN AS YOU LAY THE GRADIENT DOWN ON TOP OF THE BASE COLOR...

<Janet> SLASH IT LIKE HALF WAY UP OR HALF WAY DOWN (THIS IS THE IKAT PART OF THE INSTRUCTIONS) SO YOU END UP WITH BASE COLOR STRIPES SHOWING THROUGH

<Janet> I THINK I HAVE A PIC OF THIS

<Janet> MAYBE

<Janet> NO. DON'T.

<Janet> WELL, VISUALIZE IT, EVERY CUT YOU MAKE IN YOUR GRADIENT LASAGNA, THIS LEAVES A GAP OF CLAY FOR THE BASE TO SHOW THROUGH.

<Vyx> Oh. I am getting what you are doing here, finally.

<Janet> SO MAKE A LOT OF CUTS SO THE SWIRL ENDS UP LOOKING RANDOM

<Janet> YEAH, I NEEDED PICS

<BlackCats> note me. which one of the 3 canes in pic best shows what you're doing?

<Janet> NEXT ONE I MAKE, I'LL TAKE PICS THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH AND POST THEM

<Vyx> You called this a Van Gogh cane before, didn't you?

<Janet> THE ONE ON THE LEFT

<Janet> YEAH. BECAUSE IN BLUES IT LOOKS LIKE THE SKY IN STARRY NIGHT

<Janet> OKAY... TO REMIND US WHAT WE'RE DOING? RIGHT NOW WE HAVE A LASAGNA NOODLE ON STEROIDS ON OUR DESK, THE BOTTOM OF IT IS ONE SOLID COLOR...

<Janet> AND THE TOP OF IT IS A RAGGED GRADIENT (TOP TO BOTTOM, SO THE WHOLE WAY DOWN YOU HAVE BOTH LIGHT AND DARK)

<Janet> RIGHT?

<Janet> NOW, USING ALL FIVE HANDS GOD GAVE YOU, FEED THIS NOODLE INTO THE PASTA MAKER ON A MEDIUM SETTING

<Jambalaya> i think i'm picturing it

<cak> lol

<Vyx> We cut the ragged one from both sides, sort of randomly?

<Vyx> like 2 cuts from this side, 3 from the other, 1 from the first, etc?

<Janet> YEAH. RANDOM.

<Vyx> and in different widths, right?

<Janet> AND SINCE YOU CUT THE RADIENT, AND RANDOMLY SO DIFFERENT WIDTHS, IT'S GAPING OPEN WHERE IT'S CUT

<Janet> GRADIENT I MEAN

<Vyx> It's hard to be really random, the brain likes order. :)

* Raven z brain is definately disorderly

<Jambalaya> lol, not janet's

<Vyx> Yeah, sort of gap it as you cut, so the base color shows thru.

<Janet> ANYWAYS, NOW YOU'RE GOING TO GET PROBABLY 10-15 FEET OF LASAGNA NOODLE, WITH THE BOTTOM OF IT A SOLID COLOR AND THE TOP A GRADIENT WITH STRIPES IN IT NOW

<Janet> GUESSTIMATE ABOUT HALF AND CUT IT IN HALF

<Janet> NOW YOU'RE GOING TO NEED TO FIND TWO EXTRA HANDS, YOU NEED ABOUT SEVEN HANDS TO DO THIS NEXT PART...

<Vyx> oh gawd, lol

<Janet> START ROLLING THE TWO HALVES INTO EACH OTHER. AND I DO! HAVE A PIC OF THIS

<Janet> (SOMEONE THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY)

<Raven> first I have to find fifteen feet of empty counter space as opposed to five inches

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/starry1.jpg

<cak> (mine'll have to look like that ribbon candy to get it that long)

<Janet> CLAY IS COOL, I DRAPED THIS ALL OVER AND AROUND ME

<Vyx> That isn't any 15 feet of clay in that pic, lol

<Raven> Mine would be full of cat and dog hairs by then

<Janet> NO, I CHEATED AND HAD STACKED LAYERS UP TO BE ONLY LIKE 3 FEET LONG AND THAT WAS THE LAST BIT

<Janet> WELL, MINE IS FULLA CAT HAIR

<Janet> THERE'S A REASON I MADE THE LAST ONE A GINGER COLOR THEME

<Janet> BUT THAT IS TEXTURE.

<Jambalaya> cat hair strengthens the clay, right?

<cak> *embellished* with cat hair

<Janet> IT DOES.

<Janet> ENHANCED EVEN

<Janet> IT LOOKS BETTER IF YOU ROLL IT SINGLE LAYER

<Janet> THE YELLOW ORANGE ONE I DID SINGLE LAYER, THIS ONE I DID STACKED

<Janet> THEN REDUCE IT TO HOWEVER BIG YOU WANT IT AND VOILA, YOU CAN MAKE STARRY NIGHTS (OR DAZE) ON EVERYTHING

<Janet> I USUALLY REDUCE THESE THINGS TO THREE OR FOUR DIFFERENT WIDTHS, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE A LITTLE BIT OF A CANE

<Janet> AND MY TUPPERWARE THINGIE I KEEP CANES IN IS LIMITED TO 8" LONG

<cak> it really gives you a nice collection to work with though

<Janet> ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT ONE? i REALLY WILL TAKE PICS THE NEXT ONE I MAKE SO YOU CAN SEE THE STEPS

<Janet> YEAH, MAKES IT EASY TO COVER STUFF BECAUSE ANY HOLE YOU'VE GOT THE RIGHT SIZE CANE TO SLICE

<Vyx> We need the steps I think.

<Janet> I STOLE PICS TO SHOW THE FEATHER CANE

<Vyx> And I'd love the "real" name of this cane, but I think Van Gogh or Starry Nights works fine for a name, lol.

<Janet> BUT THEN WAS TOO ASHAMED TO MAKE THEM INTO A PAGE. I'LL TAKE PICS OF MY OWN CANES NEXT ONE.

<Janet> FEATHER CANES ARE FUN.

<stubby> or Janet Gogh

<Janet> AND NOT NEARLY SO HARD

* yamamama hides her cookie recipe from tina

<Janet> JANET VAN GOGH

<Janet> JANET VAN GOGH REAL SLOGH

<Vyx> That's just you taking a ride with Mike in his cruiser, lol...

<stubby> lol

<Janet> SERENE, CANE PIECES ARE AT http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/canes.jpg

<Judy> might be dangerous to your ears, Janet

<Janet> LOL

<Janet> REMEMBER THE FIRST STEPS i TOLD YOU TO REMEMBER??

<Judy> Skinner blend?

<Janet> YES!

<cak> uh, kinda (why do you think I got started logging?)

<Vyx> Serene, tomorrow is final day to sign up? I'll go price color copies after work... and then sign up or not.

<Janet> ROLLED INTO A PLUG

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather1.jpg

<cak> before the lasagne making?

<Raven> THAT i remember

<Janet> IS A PIC OF THAT

<Janet> YES, BEFORE THE LASAGNA NOODLE MAKING

<Janet> SEE THE PLUG OR ROLL IS GRADIENT TOP TO BOTTOM INSTEAD OF INSIDE TO OUTSIDE

<Janet> THEN YOU SMASH DOWN THE PLUG TO A BLOCK OF GRADIENT

<Janet> THE ONLY REASON YOU SMASH IT DOWN IS SO YOU CAN FEED IT THROUGH THE PASTA MAKER

<Janet> PICK OUT A BASE COLOR AND GET A SOLID PIECE OF CLAY TO PUT ON ONE SIDE OF YOUR GRADIENT

<Janet> I HAVE A PIC

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather2.jpg

<Janet> SEE? READY TO BE FED TO THE PASTA MAKER

<Janet> WITH ME?

<cak> yep!

<Jambalaya> yes

<Judy> so far

<BlackCats> yes, now I see. thanks.

<Janet> FEED IT TO THE PASTA MAKER AND NOW, INSTEAD OF TRAILING LASAGNA NOODLE ALL OVER THE DESK...

<Janet> CUT IT AS IT COMES OUT INTO OH SEMI-SQUARE PIECES.

<Jambalaya> semi??

<Judy> rectangle?

<Raven> as in squarish?

<Janet> WELL, YOU CAN CUT INTO RECTANGLES, THAT PART ISN'T IMPORTANT, THE IMPORTANT PART IS TO MAKE THEM ALL THE SAME SIZE

<Janet> YEAH, AS IN SQUARISH. BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO MEASURE THE FIRST ONE OR ANYTHING.

<Janet> AND JUST KEEP THE FIRST TO MEASURE THE REST THE SAME SIZE

<Janet> BESIDES, YOU'LL NEED THAT FIRST ONE AT THE END

<Janet> NOW AS YOU ROLL AND CUT, MIGHT AS WELL STACK THESE THE WAY THEY SHOULD GO, RIGHT?

<Vyx> Yeah, that might help

<Janet> SO LAY THE SECOND PIECE YOU CUT DOWN ON YOUR DESK OR CUTTING BOARD OR WHATEVER YOU CLAY ON

<Janet> THEN THE THIRD PIECE YOU START WITH ITS END ON THE DESK AND IT DRAPED OVER THE FIRST PIECE

<Janet> I HAVE A PIC OF THIS!

<Vyx> (12 inch ceramic tiles)

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather3.jpg

<Janet> NOW MOSTLY YOU WANT YOUR FEATHER TO ALL BE RUNNING THE SAME LIGHT TO DARK OR DARK TO LIGHT DIRECTION

<Janet> SO DECIDE BEFORE YOU START IF YOU WANT THE TIPS DARK OR LIGHT

<Janet> THE DRAPING OVER PART IS GOING TO BE THE CENTER

<Janet> AND WE'RE BUILDING HALF THE FEATHER

<Janet> DOES THAT MAKE SENSE YET?

<Judy> yep

<Janet> (WHEW)

<cak> I think so (I wish I were doing this, I'd be more sure of what I was unsure of)

<Judy> lol, cak

<Janet> NOW HERE AND THERE YOU CAN TURN A PIECE THE OTHER DIRECTION, JUST FOR FUN

<Janet> YOU DON'T HAVE TO, BUT YOU CAN ALTERNATE THEM AT WHATEVER INTERVALS YOU WANT

<Janet> AND YOU CAN ADD SPOTS TO YOUR FEATHER TOO

<cak> 180 degree turn or 90 degree?

<Janet> I HAVE A PIC OF ADDING SPOTS

<Janet> 180 DEGREE TURN

<cak> gotcha, thanks

<Janet> OTHERWISE HALF YOUR CANE WILL BE SOLID LIGHT AND THE OTHER HALF SOLID DARK

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather4.jpg

<Janet> THE REASON MY SPOTS LOOKED SO COOL IN THE FIRST BLUE CANE WAS BECAUSE, UH, WELL, I DIDN'T SEE THE COLOR I WANTED IN NEW CLAY, BUT I HAD A LACE CANE IN PINK

<Janet> SO I REDUCED THE END OF THAT TO TINY AND USED IT

<Janet> I MAY DO THAT AGAIN ON PURPOSE, IT TURNED OUT REALLY COOL

<Vyx> Oh, that picture shows better the way the light to dark should go, too.

<Janet> YEAH. THAT PIC REALLY SHOWS HOW YOU'RE BUILDING THIS THING

<Janet> SO USE UP ALL BUT ONE OF YOUR SLICES AND YOU'LL END UP WITH A PRETTY FAT HALF A FEATHER

<cak> the lace can is very cellular looking (which I love)

<Janet> I LEFT MY MEASURING SLICE FOR LAST (IT WAS ALL WHOPPYJAWED BY THIS POINT ANYWAY)

<Janet> TAKE UP YOUR LUMP OF HALF FEATHER AND USE THAT LAST SLICE TO COVER ALL THE ENDS SHOWING AT THE BOTTOM OF IT

<Janet> DANG, DON'T HAVE A PIC OF THIS, BUT WHEN YOU PICK THIS UP, YOU'LL HAVE A NICE SOLID BASE COLOR ON THE FIRST SLICE YOU LAID DOWN FLAT...

<Janet> AND GRADIENT ENDS OF ALL THE REST OF THE SLICES

<Janet> SO TAKE THAT LAST SLICE, LAY IT BASE COLOR OUT AND COVER THE ENDS

<Janet> SO YOU HAVE NICE BASE COLOR ALL THE WAY UP THE BOTTOM

<Janet> OR NOW IT'S THE SIDE

<Janet> SOON IT WILL BE THE MIDDLE OF YOUR FEATHER

<Janet> I WONDER WHAT FEATHER5 IS OF

<Janet> LET'S SEE

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather5.jpg

<Janet> OH THE FINISHED ONE!

<cak> lol (adventures in web surfing)

<Janet> OKAY, SO WE'RE NOT QUITE THERE YET.

<Janet> PICK A COLOR FOR YOUR UH UH WHATEVER YOU'D CALL THE QUILL OF IT, THE MIDDLE PART

<Janet> IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CONTRASTING. NONE OF MINE ARE

<Janet> BUT THE NEXT ONE MAY BE<G>

<Janet> CUT YOUR LUMP OF PILED SLICES IN HALF AND PUT THE TWO HALVES TOGETHER, WITH THE QUILL PART IN THE MIDDLE

<Janet> AS YOU DO THAT PART, TRY TO GET THE COLORS LINED UP.

<Janet> SOME OF US NEVER HAVE EXACTLY EVEN CANES. I WON'T NAME JANET NAMES

<Janet> VOILA. A FEATHER

<Janet> YOU CAN USE IT LIKE FEATHERS, OR FIT THEM TOGETHER TO MAKE A SQUARE, OR FIT THEM UP AND DOWN OR LAP THEM OVER EACH OTHER OR WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT

<Vyx> reducing this and keeping the shape has to be a bear?

<Janet> IT'S A LOT EASIER TO REDUCE IT WITH BOTH HALVES TOGETHER.

<Janet> I TRIED TO REDUCE IT BEFORE CUTTING IT IN HALF ONCE.

<Janet> THAT was A BEAR

<Janet> IT'S NOT SO BAD, THE FEATHER SHAPE FITS THE SHAPE OF MY HANDS

<Janet> OR RATHER MY THUMBS ON THE BOTTOM AND FOREFINGER UP THE FEATHER PART

<Janet> IT COULD BE WORSE, IT WAS WORSE BEFORE I GOT IT REDUCED SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT MY HANDS

<cak> lol

<Jambalaya> so when cane is finished, how big is it measured acrosss?

<Vyx> heh

<Janet> MY HANDS ARE SMALL, BUT UH, WELL, I'VE MADE ENOUGH TO COVER THE LIVING ROOM SOFA

<Janet> AS BIG AS YOU WANT IT TO BE, VICKI. BEFORE I REDUCED THE LAST ONE, IT STARTED OUT LIKE 6" ACROSS AT THE WIDEST POINT

<Vyx> egads

<Janet> AND MOST OF THE CANE IS ABOUT AN INCH WIDE NOW

<Judy> whoa

<Janet> I TOLD YA. I WENT CANE MAD MAKING THIS.

<Janet> I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE A LITTLE BIT

<Jambalaya> ok, so it's like 3 ft long right?

<Janet> LOL NAW, ONLY ABOUT 18" LONG. BUT ABOUT 3" WIDE

<Raven> ohhh my gawwwwwwwwd! LOL!

<Janet> I LEFT SOME HUGE ONES TO COVER UP A WHOLE ALMOST SIDE OF AN ORNAMENT

<Janet> AND REDUCED ABOUT A FOOT OF IT TO AN INCH WIDE

<stubby> so how are you gonna bake your sofa in an oven, sounds like you are getting ready to cover it too

<Janet> AND ANOTHER FOOT OF IT TO AN INCH TALL, THAT'S ABOUT A HALF INCH WIDE

<Janet> I'VE GOT ENOUGH FEATHER CANE TO<G>

<Janet> I FIGURED I'D SEMI HEAT SET IT WITH MY HEAT TOOL FOR NOW, THEN THIS SUMMER SET IT OUT ON THE SIDEWALK AROUND THE FIRST OF AUGUST AND THAT SHOULD DO IT

<Vyx> Andy... bake all the slices in the oven, then glue them to the sofa. :)

<stubby> lol

* Raven is eyeballing the glass shade on her floor lamp now.... hmmmm

<Janet> OH THAT WOULD WORK, TOO, IF YOU'RE NOT IN A WARM CLIMATE

<stubby> sound have known you clay gals would figure it out

<Janet> SURE, RAVEN, LET ME SEND YOU A FOOT OR TWO OF CANE<G>

<Vyx> So, Janet... it won't get cold enough to bake your ornaments until like January if you are lucky...

<Janet> LET ME ALSO TELL YOU IN MY LAST FIVE MINUTES WHAT I'M GONNA DO WITH ALL THESE EXTRA CANES

<Janet> I'M PRAYING FOR WINTER SOON

<Vyx> you gonna give em away raw with baking instructions? LOL

<Janet> AT LEAST 40 DEGREES. IF IT COULD JUST GET DOWN TO 40 DEGREES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT I'D BAKE 'EM

<Janet> 65 DEGREES FOR THE LOW AIN'T COLD ENOUGH

<Janet> NOW THAT'S AN IDEA! SEND THEM WITH BAKING INSTRUCTIONS.<G>

<Janet> OKAY... LET ME THINK, WHAT DID I CALL THAT PIC

<stubby> you are gonna give how to attach to ornaments and baking instructons aren't you?

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather6.jpg

<Janet> LOL I MIGHT!

<Janet> ANYWAY, GET A BASE COLOR AND STACK ALL YOUR DISCARDED CANES ON IT

<Janet> SMASH IT ALL DOWN WITH A BRAYER OR A ROD

<Jambalaya> ooooo the strawberry is cool!

<Janet> THEN RUN IT THROUGH THE PASTA MAKER JUST LIKE IT WAS A GRADIENT

<Janet> YEAH BUT HOW MUCH STRAWBERRY DO YA NEED?

<stubby> telll her enough to cover your sofa,Jam

<Vyx> lol

<Raven> omg! Don't even tell me you smooshed that sweet strawberry cane?!

<Janet> ANYWAY, THIS FEATHER, SINCE NOT ALL OR EVEN MOST OF YOUR CANES "MATCH" IT IS A VERY COOL QUILT LOOKING PRIMITIVE LOOKING CANE

<Janet> LOL!

<Janet> IT'S A GONNER, RAVEN

* Raven goes into polymer arrest

* Judy follows her

<Vyx> I wanna see the feather you made from those.

<Janet> AND A BUNCH OF NATASHA CANES, TOO

<Janet> OKAY, TALK AMUNGST YERSELVES, I'LL SCAN IT

<Vyx> Natasha canes?

<Janet> SCRAPS MADE INTO BLOCKS, CUT AND TWISTED, ETC

<Janet> OOO I ALSO MADE A COOL CHRYS CANE USING THAT INSTEAD OF SOLID CLAY, I'LL SCAN THAT TOO

<stubby> how did she attach it to the ornament and how long did she bake it , for pete's sake!

<Vyx> Oh. Hmm. I know the term, but as slices used to cover something in mirror image slices.

<stubby> you still have some novice out here

<Janet> OH. i JUST STUCK THE SLICES OF THE CANE ON THE ORNAMENT, ROLLED IT DOWN FLAT AND BAKED IT WHATEVER THE CLAY PACKAGE SAID

<Vyx> Andy. You cut slices, mush em onto the glass and smooth em out.

<Janet> TAKE THE GOLD DEALIE OFF THE TOP FIRST. DON'T BAKE THAT PART

<Vyx> Then bake em for however thick the clay is... prolly about 1/2 an hour.

<stubby> did not use liquid clay or anything?

<Janet> YEAH, 30 MINUTES IS GOOD

<Janet> NOPE, JUST REGULAR CLAY

<Vyx> Don't need it.

<Judy> the glass won't break?

<Raven> the clay sticks on the glass by itself

<Janet> LET ME GO SCAN THE ONCE WUZ STRAWBERRY CANE

<Janet> DON'T PUSH THE SLICES DOWN REAL HARD

<Janet> TRUST ME ON THAT

<Vyx> The glass won't break. The clay sticks.

<Vyx> Yeah, you gotta be sorta gentle.

<Janet> YOU CAN EASILY PUT A THUMB THROUGH THE ORNAMENT IF YOU'RE OVERZEALOUS. DON'

<Raven> oh but wouldn't a few coats of transparent liquid clay over the top look loverly

<Janet> T ASK ME HOW I KNOW THAT

<Janet> OH IT WOULD!!

<Janet> I'M GONNA SCAN NOW

<Vyx> No, the tls wouldn't look good. It cures matte and you get brush strokes and on something round it would drip off as you were baking and make a puddle on the down side.

<Jambalaya> and andy, clean the glass down with alcohol first

<Vyx> (I've tried it, lol)

<cak> hmmmm, I'm wondering if a mica shift type of sheet would work with this? or how to do snowflakes

<Vyx> Cak, slices of mica shift work great on this.

<Judy> do they need a lot of sanding?

<Raven> you'd have to polish it... but I bet you could end up with a gem stone looking ornament

<Vyx> And you could make a snowflake cane, that wouldn't be too hard to do.

<Vyx> If you roll it up good before baking... couple 5 coats of FFF and not too much sanding.

<cak> you wouldn't have to completely cover the glass either, would you?

<Judy> ty, vyx

<BlackCats> vyx, i saw something on CD the other day where the tls was put on in small spots and heat set with a heat gun, then doing spots until done, then baking as usual

<stubby> i know that one Jam, clean everything non porous with alcohol first no matter what you gonna do with it

<Vyx> I used the really thick sculpey glaze on mine, still looked good.

<Raven> yea.... set the TLS witht he gun before the oven and you can put it on pretty thick

<Jambalaya> lol, ya

<Raven> thick glaze would look nice too

<Janet> OKAY SLICE IS AT http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/feather7.jpg

<Vyx> Oh, and leave the clay off the neck part, so you can put the little hanger thingie back on.

<Raven> oh I love it

<Janet> MICA SHIFT WORKS GREAT!!

<Jambalaya> that's gorgeous

<BlackCats> that is beautiful, janet

<Judy> lovely, Janet

<cak> beautiful!

<Vyx> That's a beautiful feather, Janet!

<Janet> MAKE A SLAB OF SHIFTED MICA, THEN ROLL IT SO YOU HAVE BRIGHT CLAY ON THE OUTSIDE AND DARK ON THE INSIDE AND DO SLICES OF THAT

<Janet> YOU CAN EVEN FIND THE WEE STRAWBERRY IN THERE IF YOU LOOK

<stubby> that is so pretty

<Janet> I LIKE THE "CLEAN THE DESK FEATHER" CANE BEST

<Vyx> Yep, looking like a dried strawberry now. :)

<Janet> LET ME SLICE THE CHRYS CANE AND SHOW THAT

<Janet> THIS TURNED OUT SERIOUSLY COOL

<Vyx> I tend to use my TLS more for clay glue than anything, lol... just because I dislike the matte finish it bakes with. If it baked up shiney I'd prolly use it all the time.

<Jambalaya> hey andy, i'm going to be playing with clay all next week, come on down

<Raven> I just like the depth the TLS gives to things, but I still use the FFF over it

<Raven> it does shine up if you polish it too

<Vyx> I'm lazy. :)

<stubby> OK! tell hank I want pralines and gumbo

<Raven> pralines!!!!

<Jambalaya> that could be arranged

<stubby> oooooooh Raven, he makes the best!

<Janet> http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/chrys.jpg

<Janet> BRB

<Judy> kewl

<Raven> oh yer right... seriously cool!

<Vyx> That is going to be an interesting cane when you bake it, Janet!

<stubby> that is neat

<cak> lovely! Is that translucent clay as base?

<BlackCats> very nice

<Vyx> Yeah, it is... that will look sooooo great on plain clear ornaments!

<Judy> I made a spiral cane with white and translucent that looked great on black

* Vyx is more stingy with the translucent...

<Raven> with a twinkle bulb stuck in the neck!

<stubby> when you slice these canes, do you just like them on the ornaments in layers like leaves or do you press them together to form solid cover

<Vyx> I love translucent clay. But NOT the kind you can get at the store. I found out the stuff with the bleaching agent works sooo much better.

<Raven> yes..... much clearer

* Vyx is still ticked off about her browned rose cane, lol

<Judy> you get that on line?

<Raven> I'm still working with the huge block I bought from Sparkle AGES ago

<Vyx> Judy, yes. Premo with bleach is what it's called. It doesn't really have "bleach" in it, but it doesn't turn brown as easy as the other translucents.

<Judy> Clay Factory should have it, then

<Raven> still have to be careful with baking temps tho... use a real oven instead of a toaster oven

<Vyx> I am OUT of Premo bleached. Well, maybe a tiny bit left, not enough for anything.

<Janet> BACK. i can barely do a whole hour class without having to go potty

<Jambalaya> tmi janet

<Janet> and it is translucent cane as a base

<Janet> and scrap cane as the flower part

<Vyx> Clay Factory or PolymerClayExpress

<Janet> vyx, get the kato kind. i really like it

<Jambalaya> andy asked if the slices have to completely cover the glass??

<stubby> someone answer my quesion pleas, do you slice the cane and make it like petals or do you mash it together to cover the entire ornament? do you understand my question

<Judy> Clay Factory is just 30 miles from me

<Janet> i think they probably do

<Vyx> That's really lovely, Janet, we wanna see that when it's all baked on something.

<Janet> or else they'll pop off

<Janet> there'

<Janet> s

<Vyx> You may have to go buy new clear balls for it.

<Janet> an ornament you can't see with it on there.

<Janet> let me see if I can't rescue my scan a tiny bit to show it

<cak> overlap or no overlap of the cane coins stubby? Is that what you mean?

<Vyx> Butt em up, Andy, or layer them, but cover the glass all the way.

<stubby> ty

<Raven> stubby, if you place them side by side like a mosaic, it'll be a smooth ornament, but I'm sure you could overlap like scales if you wanted that effect

<stubby> yes cak

<Vyx> YOu can do either. And you can smooth em out if you overlap.

<cak> ('cept not too hard)

<stubby> scales raven, that is the word I needed, thank you

<Vyx> Scales would be good. Hmm, that cries for a leaf cane done in fall colors.

<Jambalaya> but i did those candle cups leaving some space open, as long as some of the clay touches to keep it secure

<Raven> I think the leaf canes would look really nice overlapped like scales

<Vyx> gmta Raven

<Janet> i overlapped feather cane like that

<Raven> yea Vyx... what you just said

<cak> so kinda like netting Jamba? I think that would be lovely

<Janet> yeah, netting would work

<Vyx> And right, what Sis said... you can leave glass showing if you like.

<Janet> but not secured on, it will pop off

<Jambalaya> ya, they look really cool with a candle burning

<Vyx> Just make sure the clay all touches good.

<Raven> also after baking, a drop of super glue would hold any "floaters" tight to the glass so you could work more open if you like

<Judy> could Super Glue them on

* Vyx wants to see that, since I was there when you made em, lol

<Judy> sorry, Raven

<cak> hey gmta!

<Jambalaya> i scanned em, lemme see if i can find it

<Raven> LOL! we were typing at the same time

<Vyx> I gotta go. Way past my bedtime now.

<Vyx> Great class, Janet! Thanks!

<stubby> nite vyx

<BlackCats> nite, vyx

<Judy> nite, vyx

<Janet> wait!

<Vyx> g'night y'all!

<Raven> nite vyx

<Janet> i have one more pic uploading

<Vyx> I'm waiting

<stubby> i have all this stuff, all you inspire me. gotta try it

<Janet> okay, let me push it on thru

<Jambalaya> http://www.dm.net/~jambalaya/newcandlecup.jpg

<Judy> wow, must look really neat with a light in it, Jam!

<Vyx> oooh, thanks Sis!

<stubby> beautiful vicki

<Janet> i didn't optimize this one but look here http://www.cyberstampers.com/class/janet/clay/orns.jpg

<BlackCats> pretty, jamb

<Janet> the chrys cane is the middle of the top row

<Raven> oh wow... beautiful... I love the deep blue

<Janet> oh wow I love that

<Vyx> But still unbaked, yes?

<stubby> those are really pretty

<Raven> ooohhhh those look soo pretty

<Jambalaya> i love the ones that look kinda crackled

<BlackCats> very nice. i like the one with the pink flower

<Vyx> Those are all too lovely. If you don't give them away you are gonna have a heck of a tree this year.

<stubby> janet are youl gonna bke them in your toaster oven or our real oven

<Janet> that one with the flower i covered with translucent then put the flower on

<Janet> the real oven

<Janet> i put too much time into these

<Janet> uh someday i'll bake 'em

<Judy> before Christmas?

<Vyx> only if it gets cold, lol.

<Janet> if it gets down to 40 before christmas

<BlackCats> thanks for inspiring class, janet

<Raven> with the christmas cookies

<Vyx> G'night y'all.

<BlackCats> nite, all

<Janet> if not then the house stays heated all day

* Vyx send this north pole wind right to Dallas area, lol

<Janet> take care! thanks for being here!

<Judy> Thanks for class, Janet!

<Jambalaya> if y'all would get over your hatred of toaster ovens, you could bake year round

<Judy> nite all

<cak> so many of these have this fabulous metallic sheen, is that from the clay or a trick of the camera?

<Vyx> thanks again, Janet

<Vyx> bye....

<Janet> my toaster oven is evil

<Janet> i sort of went crazy with the metallic clays

<Janet> the gold that's just mica shift

<stubby> what is it with all of you, y'all don't turn your ovens on in the house during the 6 months of summer?

<Raven> the toaster ovens spike the heat... a no no with transparent clays

<Janet> stuck in pinches all over the ball

<cak> what better time for lotsa glitz than Christmas?

<Jambalaya> mine doesn't spike

<Janet> Andy? that is 11 months of summer.

<Raven> we only have 6 weeks of summer so no problemo

<Janet> see??

<Janet> our weather is just like Raven's in reverse

<Jambalaya> nah, we don't get 6 whole weeks of winter<g>

<Janet> except I don't think we get six weeks of winter

<Janet> LOL exactly

<stubby> well ours too, but I just turn the air up high and cook any way

<Raven> it's just the way most of the toaster ovens work, but I'm sure there are some more expensive models that have a more even heat

<cak> like a convection oven?

<Jambalaya> mine was around 25 bucks

<Janet> I'll cook clay that way. Not food. My cooking isn't worth AC in December.<g>

<Raven> yea.. the clay has to be baked even if it's 100 out... turn up the fans and crank on the AC

<Janet> anyway and I'm thinking about just baking these in the cardboard box too

<Janet> then sand off the shiny line

<cak> no batting?

<Raven> do the quilt batting thing

<Janet> well, yeah, but I don't have that much batting. or I have the batting but my pan isn't big enough

<Janet> and I sure don't want the oven on longer than 30 minutes

<cak> lol

<cak> (poor girl)

<Janet> i could put batting in the box around them and rest them on the batting in the box

<Janet> so only the necks would maybe touch the box edge

<Raven> that'd work

<cak> less sanding that way--a good thing

<stubby> get two of those big tin roasting pans, fill with batting and clothes pin one on top of the other one. It should hold all your ornaments

<Janet> yeah, I'm not crazy about sanding

<Janet> oh yeah. and I know I'll be wanting chex mix soon

<Janet> i make that in those big pans too

<Raven> I get those big chromed trays at the dollar store

<Jambalaya> what kind of sand paper do you use?

<Janet> go to Pep Boys and buy auto detailing sandpaper

<Janet> between 400 and 1600 grit

<Janet> lowe's don't have it

<Janet> or Napa may have it

<Janet> but Pep Boys for sure does

<Jambalaya> ok, so it's real fine grit??

<Janet> really fine grit. sit with a bowl of water between your knees and sand it wet

<Janet> so the dust won't make ya sick

<stubby> lol

<stubby> what a picture

<Janet> (yeah, it makes a lovely visual, doesn't it?_

<Jambalaya> um, i think i'd use my sink

<stubby> a bowl of water between your knees

<Janet> or do it outside with the dremel and the muslin wheel

<Janet> ya gotta stand up at the sink

<cak> all that clay dust won't be very good for your plumbing though, would it?

<Janet> forgit it. a bowl of water is the way to go

<Jambalaya> are we talking hours of sanding here or what??

<Janet> i don't know, it shouldn't reconsittute

<Jambalaya> cak, hank is a plumber, i don't care what goes down the drain<g>

<Janet> then again, what do I know? I got re-plumbed the week after Lisa flushed a tampon

<cak> lol

<Janet> I do know not to flush the "tulip design" tampons

<cak> (gotta keep that boy busy,eh?)

<Raven> okay... gotta go but this was FUN and I'm all inspired... hopefully that'll pass ;-)

<Jambalaya> besides he put extra wide drains in my craft room

<Janet> did I hear you say gumbo and pralines next week?

<Janet> LOL go make some ormanents, Rave

<cak> Guess Who's coming for dinner!

* Janet goes to check the southwest rates

<stubby> that is the menu if we come to NO

<Jambalaya> come on down!

<Janet> Tell me when.

<Janet> all I'm doing is somebody's site and waiting for my teeth to heal.

<Jambalaya> we actually don't make gumbo, but i'm sure we'd come up with something<g>

<Janet> and i can eat gumbo and pralines

<stubby> oh no! now y'all are gonna party without me!

<Janet> call and get us boats

<Janet> Andy, drive on over.

<Jambalaya> yeah!! shrimp boats!!

<Janet> shrimp boats! shrimp boats!
