<deb> ok - what are we recycling

<Jambalaya> HI Y'ALL

<Jambalaya> THIS IS A DISCUSSION CLASS, SO Y'ALL JUMP IN

<Jambalaya> I'LL JUST GET US STARTED

* Patywak needs a jump start

<Jambalaya> WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU DO WITH ALL THOSE RAKS, SWAP CARDS, TRADES, ETC????

<Patywak> eyes are dialted and can hardly see the screen

* Jambalaya PUTS SOME SUNGLASSES ON Patywak

<Patywak> doesn't help much

<Jambalaya> WB ejje

<Patywak> thanks tho

<ejje> Hi

<Jambalaya> WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU DO WITH ALL THOSE RAKS, SWAP CARDS, TRADES, ETC????

<Jambalaya> PERSONALLY, I TEND NOT TO JOIN SWAPS, MOSTLY FOR THIS REASON

<Jambalaya> WHAT DO YOU DO WITH EM??

<deb> I have an idea

<Jambalaya> SHARE IT DEB!

<deb> ok - I have some card fronts I really like

<deb> so I thought it would be a great idea to use them on the fronts of gift bags

<deb> and gussy up the gift bags

<Jambalaya> WOW, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!

<deb> or on the tops of pacakges

<deb> packages too

<deb> or

<deb> even to use for the fronts of journals

<Patywak> cut the card front down and mat it for another card

<deb> yes

<ejje> Now it's late here in Norway, so I have to say goodbye for now

<deb> good nite jje

<deb> ejje

<Jambalaya> NOW OF COURSE SOME OF THE RAKS I GET, I PUT UP ON A BULLETIN BOARD

<Jambalaya> NITE EJJE

<deb> they are great for inspiration to look at

<ejje> Bye

<deb> but occasionally you want to recycle them

<deb> and I can't bear to throw them away

<Jambalaya> NO, THAT WOULD BE WRONG

<deb> you can even

<Jambalaya> IF YOU GET STOREBOUGHT CARDS FROM NON STAMPERS, DO YOU EVER USE PARTS OF THEM TO PUT IN HANDMADE CARDS?

<deb> oh yeah

<deb> I often cut them apart and keep pieces

<deb> thinking - oh that would look SOOOO good matted

<deb> and add some beads

<deb> or glitter

<deb> or wire

<deb> or some sore of embellishment

<deb> of even a layer of vellum over the top

<deb> vellum can do wonders for changing the looks

<Jambalaya> I GOT A PACK OF REALLY CUTE ANIMAL XMAS CARDS FROM ONE OF THE CHARITIES, I THOUGHT I MIGHT CUT EM UP AND USE THE FACES

<deb> yes

<deb> on some safari paper!

<Jambalaya> HARD TO THROW EVEN THOSE AWAY<G>

<deb> I know

<Patywak> Do you ever think that a recipient thinks less of a hand made card than an expensive store bought one?

<deb> sometimes Patywak

<Patywak> Like....is that the best she can do?

<deb> like

<deb> my mother

<deb> she never says anything

<Patywak> rut roh

<Vyx> Some people do... they think "handmade" means cheap.

<deb> I never know if she likes them

<deb> or she doesn't

<Jambalaya> ya, but they're just ignorant, don't think about it

<deb> so I send her a store bought from now on

<Patywak> they don't realize what goes into making a card

<deb> and I don't worry about it

<deb> I only send homemade to people I know like them

<deb> to my friends : )

<Patywak> good idea

<Vyx> Yah, I don't mostly send cards to my family... not even the stampers, lol.

<deb> now my sister did say - how come I didn't get a made one

<deb> and I said - I didn't know you liked those

<Patywak> I don't get into many trades, swaps, etc. because I'm afriad my work will be inferior (or even theirs LOL)

<deb> that's how you learn Patywak

<deb> and you know what

<Patywak> I don't have the time to learn more than I already know! LOL I'm an old woman and have too much left to do in my life anyway.

<Jambalaya> if you think it looks good, that's all that matters

<deb> at first

<deb> I just hosted

<deb> then I got to SEE them

<deb> and I didn't participate

<deb> then I knew I could do it

<deb> and I participated too

<deb> so - Patywak host a swap

<deb> there are fun

<Patywak> no thank you...I don't have the time

<Jambalaya> lol

<deb> lol

<Patywak> I'm primarily a scrapbooker and have too many photos to scrap

<deb> oh ok

<Patywak> KWIM?

<deb> ?

<Patywak> I should be SBing now instead of here. LOL

<Patywak> know what I mean

<deb> I just started scrapping

<deb> but I stamp in my scraps

<Jambalaya> i only do a little scrapping, just enough to make samples for stubby<g>

<Patywak> i do a little stamping in my scrapping, too.

<deb> they aren't as separate arts as people like to make them

<Patywak> no inswws

<Jambalaya> so paty, did you scrap first, or stamp first?

<Patywak> inswws

<Patywak> scrap

<deb> I stamped first

<deb> so I always try to stamp in it

<Jambalaya> ya

<deb> well not ALWAYS

<Patywak> makes sense

<deb> but a lot

<deb> and the alphabets are great for titles

<deb> and backgrounds for the photos

<Jambalaya> stampers have a lot to teach the scrappers

<Patywak> I agree

<Jambalaya> we know how to make all those embellishments y'all pay a fortune for<g>

<deb> even cards fronts can be a piece on a scrap page

<Patywak> lol

* Patywak spends lots on embellishments

<Jambalaya> i get blown away when i go in a scrap store and see the prices on stuff

<Patywak> awful, huh?

<deb> it's awful

<Jambalaya> and i say, why don't they make those themselves???

<deb> and there is NO end in sight

<Patywak> Well, when you get to scrapping, sometimes you don't want to take out the time to make the embellishments. It's so much easier and quicker to use a ready made.

<Patywak> And sometimes I'm not very creative.

* Jambalaya the tightwad faints

<Patywak> lol

<Jambalaya> and, not to get on a soapbox or anything, the poor hands that makes all that premade stuff are working in sweatshops in some impoverished nation for a nickel a day

<Patywak> I'm sure they are.

<Patywak> Most of them are made in China.

<Jambalaya> ya

<deb> I'm amazed at the wire embellishments I've seen lately

<Jambalaya> yes!

* Patywak is wire challanged

<Jambalaya> and you can do that yourself too!

<deb> lol

<Patywak> Me and wire do not get along!

<deb> brb - phone

<Jambalaya> you just have to show it who's boss paty

<Patywak> lol

<Patywak> Wire is boss....it already showed me.

<Jambalaya> lol

<Patywak> About RAKS

<Jambalaya> yes?

<Patywak> Sometimes I get some really nice ones and other times it's hardly anything. Uusually I think those come from first timers.

<Jambalaya> well,

<Patywak> I like to send a nice RAK,,,plenty of whatever and something I think they can use.

<Jambalaya> there are many degrees of "talent"

<Patywak> that's for sure

<Jambalaya> i know a lot of stampers who have never done any more than very very simple cards

<Jambalaya> and thats what they enjoy making

<Jambalaya> hi KYCrafter

<Patywak> right

<Patywak> nothing wrong with that

<Patywak> well, I have a meeting at church and need to make myself presentable. Nice being here. Have a good evening.

<Patywak> bye

<Jambalaya> bye paty

<Jambalaya> KYCrafter, what do you do with raks and swap cards you get?

<KYCrafter> Hello all! Keep chatting so I can learn something!

<cak> cherish 'em!

<Jambalaya> lol

<cak> (whew--finally back) I always make pretty simple things, don't I deb?

<KYCrafter> I keep the ones that I'd like to copy in a plastic shoe box. I take apart some of them and incorporate them into my own creations!

<cak> (deb hosted my first and only swap)

<KYCrafter> I like simple ... but elegant ... or cute ... or artsy ...

<Jambalaya> i don't do much swapping either

<KYCrafter> somtimes I can get several things done from just one other RAK

<Jambalaya> i'm bad at mailing on a deadline<g>

<cak> you know, for some reason, I never thought of that--taking them apart. Good idea

<cak> (and I only mail *with* a deadline!)

<Jambalaya> lol, cak

<KYCrafter> I'm the one in stamping class that gets everyone's boo-boos and does something with them!

<deb> ok - sorry

<deb> mom was on the phone

<deb> and the phone next to the computer was dead

<Jambalaya> i've heard a lot of folks say swap deadlines keep them stamping

<KYCrafter> I them give them back to the person that "hated" them, and now they "love" them!

<deb> and had to go UP staairs to get the other one

<deb> sigh

<cak> you'll have to run a discussion on that talent KY

<KYCrafter> I am no teacher ... sorry ...

<Jambalaya> for me what get's my juices flowing is a deadline on a class<g>

<deb> didn't we have a person that did that one time

<KYCrafter> I'm one of those who can SHOW you how to do something, but I don't have the gift to teach

<deb> people sent intheir booboos

<deb> and we tried to work with them

<cak> (uh, KY, that *is* teaching)

<Jambalaya> ya, problem with that is that not everyone can really take the critism

<cak> it kind of looks like fun

<KYCrafter> but not really in my book ... I don't have the patience to keep up with helping everybody get to the same point ..

<Jambalaya> no, ky has a good point

<KYCrafter> I don't have the patience for the people (EXACTLY LIKE ME) who don't keep with the class ... I go off on my own and do my own thing with the teacher's ideas

<Jambalaya> sometimes it's really hard when it's more than one on one

<KYCrafter> AMEN!

<cak> for sure true!

<Jambalaya> and i'll tell you what

<KYCrafter> I think I could do one on one

<Jambalaya> teaching on line is wayyyyyy easier than in person

<Phyl> woo you can say that again

<Jambalaya> i do both

<KYCrafter> yeah? How's that?

<Phyl> you dont' have to look at all the faces with the blank look on them

<Jambalaya> because in here, folks usually aren't actually working along

<Phyl> then you know you are in trouble

<Jambalaya> so they can pay attention

<KYCrafter> ahhhhh

<Jambalaya> hi mary

<cak> hiya Mary

<Phyl> Hi Mary

<KYCrafter> hello from me too!

<Jambalaya> we're actually discussing what you do with raks and swap cards

<Mary> Hi Everyone. This is my first time on a class.

<Jambalaya> welcome!

<deb> welcome Mary

<cak> this is a good one--discussion and not too many people talking at once!

<Phyl> Did anyone mention redoing them and giving them to the ladies at nursing homes?

<deb> goood idea

<Jambalaya> good idea phyl

<cak> no! but what a good idea! For them to use or to just receive?

<Phyl> either if they don't have insides in them

<Phyl> then they can reuse, just add an evnie for them

<Phyl> sometime you can cut off the front of the card and layer it to another card

<deb> if they do have insides written - you can add some CS

<Phyl> yes that will work too

<KYCrafter> or, if it's just a simple stamped saying on the inside, you can put a piece of coordinating CS over it

<Phyl> and if you want to give them to the ladies as cards, you can sign them a friend and leave the envie blank and give them to the nurse to write the names on them

<KYCrafter> oops, typing too slow again, huh? LOL!

<Jambalaya> there are a few groups now collecting cards to send to the military personel

<Phyl> yes I have seen a few of those that is a good idea

<Mary> How about cutting off the front and using it decorate a gift box?

<Jambalaya> both as greetings to them, and blank ones for then to send to their own families

<Phyl> good one Mary

<KYCrafter> good thought Mary!

<cak> that would be lovely

<deb> and gift bags

<deb> add some ribbons

<Phyl> one of the girls on one of my groups does a swap just for the ladies

<Phyl> it is called a card challenge

<Phyl> she sends everyone stamped images and we have to make cards out of them

<Jambalaya> how does it work phyl?

<Phyl> then we vote on them and then they go to the nursing home

<Jambalaya> nice

<Phyl> yes i like that swap a lot

<cak> cool--you do, you learn and you serve

<Phyl> absolutely

<Jambalaya> also, occasionally someone will post on various stamping groups, asking for trading pins or other stuff, to use in schools for special kids as rewards

<Jambalaya> i'm a sucker for those<g>

<Phyl> or adults that are challenged in some way also

<Jambalaya> ya

<cak> besides being on lists, is there another way of finding out about these kinds of service "swaps"?

<Mary> A great way to reward folks and also let them see the possibilities in making something themselves.

<Phyl> so true Mary

<Phyl> not that I know of cak

<cak> (not that I can get to anything in my workroom)

<Jambalaya> cak, i've seen the requests a lot on places like the gingerwood board

<cak> so just keep lookin', eh?

<Jambalaya> i have a couple of addy's if anyone wants to send pins and such

<Jambalaya> just e-mail me at jambalaya@dm.net

<cak> cool, thanks

<Mary> Thanks

<cak> I still can't seem to part with things that someone sent to me though!

<deb> i just sent a bunch of pins to someone here ont he list for a school

<deb> and some stickers

<Jambalaya> OK, THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT DISCUSSION

<Jambalaya> LET'S MOVE OVER NOW TO #rubberclassroom

<KYCrafter> Thanks for sharing all! Gotta run for right now ... but I'll try to catch you all later!
