<fab> Yeah, they probably smuggle in sugar

<BlackCats> hi cak

<cak> hi

<cak> sugar on brayers???

<scout> it's the pasta and probably the sauce.

<BlackCats> lol, cak

<fab> no, sugar in food

<BlackCats> we're talking food right now

<cak> lol, what else?

<scout> SAUCE WORKS ON BRAYERS!

<fab> After all, a brayer is just a small rolling pin

<scout> Just gives a little different texture. vbg

<Vyx> and you could prolly brayer pasta, too, lol

<BlackCats> lol

<cak> sounds like an experiment in the making

<BlackCats> hi regina!

<BlackCats> ltns, wb

<Regina> Hi everyone!

<Jambalaya> ok, found one url so far

<Jambalaya> http://www.stubbystampers.com/bopmystery.htm

<scout> I've seen the little bowtie pasta uncooked and colored with ink used as decoration on cards.

<fab> I saw a guy on CD use a brayer on duct tape. The metal kind of tape

<Jambalaya> the bottom left is the only card i've made with a brayer

<Vyx> Oooh, Fab, tell us more

<fab> Darn, I can't get the link to work

<BlackCats> very pretty card, jam

<fab> I want to see too

<Jambalaya> try it again fab

<Jambalaya> http://www.stubbystampers.com/bopmystery.htm

<BlackCats> brayers are great for laying down color and for the resist technique

<scout> I've got one on my computer...should I send it to you?

<Vyx> I've got a page somewhere if I can locate it.

<cak> Gazdina showed us a technique where you brayer some ink on a plate of glass (or other flat non-porous surface), then stamp into it, then put a piece of paper on it, brayer in the ink--monoprint!

<Vyx> Oooh yeah!

<BlackCats> scout, send it to blackcats@dm.net

<BlackCats> I'll try to pop it up on my PictureTrail for you

<scout> That sounds neat cak.ok

<Stampverb> are these all your designs, Jam?

<cak> Of course I haven't done it, but it sure sounds exciting

<Jambalaya> yes verb

<Stampverb> beautious!

<BlackCats> I use a brayer to press down the tissue paper when doing my PearlEx technique

<Jambalaya> here's another example of cool brayer work

<Jambalaya> http://www.cyberstampers.com/mystery102604.htm

<Stampverb> you should put yer name there as the artist

<Jambalaya> lol, i didn't realize i hadn't

<cak> that's something I didn't think of BC, I bet it flattens it without "ironing" all the fabulous texture out of the tissue paper

<Jambalaya> that was a quickie page i made cuz they wouldn't fit on the mystery class page that month

<scout> sent, but awfully big as I haven't gotten to downsizing that one yet.

<Stampverb> Fab, tell us about the guy on CD

<fab> Nothing will open tonight, darn

<Jambalaya> fab, maybe you need to reboot

<BlackCats> thanks, scout

<fab> On CD he glued down cardstock shapes to a wooden picture frame

<BlackCats> I'll see what I can do

<fab> Covered it with the silver tape used for duct work

<fab> brayered it down really well so you could see the shapes and lettering

<fab> Then used alcohol inks to color it

<fab> Droped the inks onto felt and dabbed it all over

<Vyx> (found it, my brayer class page)

<fab> Then rubbed the inks off the highlights

<scout> did he use ink on brayer?

<Stampverb> neat, fab

<Stampverb> how did it look?

<fab> No, dry brayer. Ink on felt piece

<BlackCats> oooh, that sounds interesting

<fab> It looked great. Check out the web site for last week

<Jambalaya> lets have it vyx!

<Vyx> Just used the brayer to bring out the shapes, eh?

<Vyx> http://members.cox.net/vyxxan/brayer/brayer

<fab> Yes

<Vyx> that would be faster, using a rubber brayer like that.

<Vyx> hmm, thought I had text in there, guess not.

<Regina> Vyx--you brayer good!

<BlackCats> really like that butterfly, vyx

<fab> Was the butterfly a resist ink

<BlackCats> way cool

<Vyx> Yeah, I mostly seem to do resists these days with my brayer.

<BlackCats> oops, scout I gave you the wrong addy

<fab> These are beautiful

<Stampverb> great pix, Vyx

<BlackCats> it should be blackcats@cyberstampers.net

<fab> I am getting them open by opening a new explorer windo and hand typing the addy

<Stampverb> poor fab

<Vyx> whatever works!

<fab> I have also used the brayer lately to help smooth the pages I glue together in altered books

<scout> resent, BC

<BlackCats> oh, good idea

<BlackCats> ty scout

<BlackCats> sorry about that

<BlackCats> brb

<cak> nice fab--even pressure and not a lot of odd pressures on the hands and wrists

<Jambalaya> thats what brayers were originally meant for, to smooth paper down

<fab> Worked pretty good

<scout> actually, I use the little wooden brayers they use for pies, to smooth down my creases like a bone folder.

<Jambalaya> i've had one since the early 70's when decoupage purses were the rage

<cak> in printmaking they're also used to soften and spread the rather stiff printing ink

<Regina> Ha! Scout, I used one of those little wood brayers a lot, too.

<Stampverb> pie brayers?

<fab> It is fun to brayer on sticker paper, then emboss a stamp, trim it out and adhere to a background

<Jambalaya> hmmmm i don't go in the kitchen much, do i need to go swipe this pie brayer??

<Vyx> hmm. I have one of those pampered chef wood brayers.. maybe it should migrate to the craft stuff.

<Regina> It's the brayer with the wood roller in the cake making section at the arts/crafts stores.

<cak> shouldn't everything Vyx?

<fab> I think for inks that rubber is better

<scout> The wooden brayer is really not used for ink, but it makes a nice crease.

<fab> I think the wood one is for sealing piecrusts

<Regina> Yeah...don't think ink would do well with wood.

<scout> Just image your next pie!

<fab> colorful crust

<Regina> call it an Easter egg pie!

<Jambalaya> brb

<cak> I used the Gaz technique (minus the stamping into the ink) to make the night background for this calendar page...

* Stampverb uses fingers to seal piecrusts

<BlackCats> lol

<fab> Question

<BlackCats> here's another example of resist and brayer technique

<cak> http://www.dm.net/~cak/miscicons/2003june.jpg

<BlackCats> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=6677782&uid=1026244&members=1

<Regina> I don't make pies (or cakes).

<fab> Anyone know a good ink for pastel backgrounds?

<Regina> That's great, Cak.

<scout> Love the first on BC

<cak> that resist technique is such a wonderful subtle one

<Stampverb> yikes, all these web pages--this is great!

<scout> Stubby stamp looks so great on the background, too

<BlackCats> ty

<BlackCats> hi joy, wb

<BlackCats> that stamp is so very versatile

<Jambalaya> back

<Jambalaya> wb joy

<BlackCats> it's supposed to be a halloween stamp but I use it as an element or background stamp

<Stampverb> cak, please recap the Gazdina technique?

<scout> I fell in love with it immediately, such lovely swirls.

<BlackCats> yes! that's what I like about it too

<BlackCats> hi pat

<cak> just drop inks on a flat non-porous surface, brayer, put paper face down on ink and brayer

<pmstamper> hi there!

<BlackCats> we're talking about brayers tonight

<cak> (Gaz suggests that you can stamp into the ink before laying the paper down to remove some of the ink)

<pmstamper> oh good, I love brayering.

<BlackCats> got any good ideas?

<BlackCats> any pictures you could show using brayers?

<cak> yeah--you sound like you could have some valuable information for us pm--spill!

<pmstamper> somebody probably already said you can wrap rubberbands around brayer to give a different texture?

<fab> Cak, was that done with dye or pigment ink

<BlackCats> no, that hasn't been mentioned pat

<BlackCats> tell

<Stampverb> thankls, cak

<pmstamper> : )

<cak> I used dye ink, but pigment would probably be easier (won't dry so fast)

<BlackCats> lol

<joy> have you tried chalk ink with a brayer?

<fab> I think you need to have a removeable brayer to use rubberbands

<cak> no, does it handle differently?

<BlackCats> no! does that work well?

<Jambalaya> regina, you haven't brayered with wonder wash?????

<pmstamper> That is true fab.

<BlackCats> pooh, lost her

<Regina> Not yet, Jam. I put it on my list Sun to spritz brayer w/WW.

<Jambalaya> good girl<g>

<BlackCats> you'll have to let us know how that turns out

<cak> you can brayer with WW?? what kind of effect does that give?

<pmstamper> Oh, I will have to try the WW thingy too.

<Jambalaya> well, we don't know yet, Regina will report on it<g>

<Stampverb> Jam do you have pix of WW brayering?

<Jambalaya> nooooo, i just thought of it

<fab> A true experimenter

<Regina> Also, want to smear some WW on plexiglass, run brayer over, then brayer onto bakcground paper that's colored with ink or water colors.

<cak> well, shoot! do you put a dollar bill on a string and pull it out of the reach of people too???

<Jambalaya> lol

<pmstamper> lol

<fab> lol

<Vyx> hehehe

<cak> how thick is WW?

* Jambalaya shows cak the big slab of cake she's eating

<cak> ooooo torture!!

<Regina> LOL

<BlackCats> lol

<fab> pull it away!

<cak> lol

<BlackCats> here's scout's cards:

<BlackCats> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=6677782&uid=1026244&members=1

<BlackCats> the first picture

<Vyx> oooh, nice

<BlackCats> really

<cak> OK, here's what I want to know--what's the secret to the seamless blending of colors??

<BlackCats> nice bright colors

<Regina> Those are great, Scout.

<BlackCats> one thing I do cak is to flip the brayer so that like colors touch like colors

<BlackCats> (if that makes any sense)

<Vyx> depends on the inkpad, CAK. With something like a BigNJuicy rainbow pad, you don' have seams.

<scout> Kaliadacolor can't remember the shade. Used art board to stamp Koko on and edged with gold. @nd one has little eyelet lizard on it.

<Vyx> And then flip the paper or the brayer so you can match up on the sides.

<Regina> Wonder Wash is about as thick as heavy cream. It's water soluable, so you can thin to whatever consistency you need.

<cak> it does make sense--thank you. (my brayer often look like crappy stripes)

<BlackCats> yw

<Stampverb> I don't get it Vyx

<Regina> Run the braye back and forth in the same place without reinking helps blend and spread the edges of the color.

<BlackCats> I use a brayer to do the 'caught in crystal' technique too

<BlackCats> to press down the tissue paper

<cak> ooo, I like that the WW isn't watery (unless you want it to be)

<scout> Also, gloss paper works better, matte seems to grab faster and you can't do the line quick enough

<BlackCats> right

<Regina> I stippled with WW straight from bottle. Perfect.

<cak> yeah, dye ink and I seem to be mortal enemies

<BlackCats> lol

<Regina> I love dye ink on everything.

<Vyx> Yeah, glossy paper is important with dye ink and brayer.

<Jambalaya> and didn't i read somewhere that misting the brayer with water helps blend the ink?

<fab> Anyone got an idea for pastel brayer backgrounds?

<Vyx> pastel inks, Fab?

<pmstamper> like chalk inks?

<Vyx> Or just not ink it heavy?

<Regina> I like to brayer dye ink onto semi-gloss paper, too.

<BlackCats> I always moisten my brayer before using as I've found it makes it easier to pick up the color from the inkpad

<fab> None of the rainbow pads seem to have light colors

<fab> I get very intense results

<BlackCats> uh, there's a kaleidacolor that is called baby powder that is pastels

<fab> Maybe I have to ink my own using the shadow stamp reinker

<Jambalaya> hmmmm, i think kaleidacolor might have a pastel set

<Regina> I think Kaleidacolor has some pastel pads. Look at www.marcopaper.com.

<Vyx> have you looked at the bignjuicys? I'm pretty sure they have a couple pastels, too.

<Jambalaya> lol, all at once now.....

<BlackCats> lol

<fab> I have used that baby powder one but i want even lighter

<pmstamper> if you roll the brayer off once onto scrap, you will get a lighter look, but it may just look faded to you rather than covering nicely.

<Jambalaya> ooo ooo ooo i got it fab

<fab> When you remove some ink it does not blen out as well

<Regina> Try sprinting your paper with water before brayering.

<fab> Yes, jam

<BlackCats> hi wpf

<Jambalaya> do the brayering in bright colors, but then put vellum on top

<Stampverb> fab, Bri;lliance makes some luscious 3-color pastel pads

<fab> I will have to try that

<Jambalaya> hi wpf

<pmstamper> good idea, jam.

<BlackCats> wpf, are you new here?

<fab> but those are pigment

<BlackCats> can be used a dyes tho, fab

<Jambalaya> brilliance will dry on glossy

<Stampverb> have you used the pigments?

<fab> The vellum just might get the results I want

<BlackCats> wpf, we're talking about using brayers tonight

<Jambalaya> wpf, this is a discussion class about brayers, just jump right in

<wpf> ok thank you

<BlackCats> is this your first time here?

<fab> I need to do 9 graduation cards this year. Maybe some will be brayered

<wpf> yes

<BlackCats> brayers are a great way to make a bunch of cards quickly

<Regina> My cousin Elaine makes beautiful plaid background papers with the brayer.

<BlackCats> welcome, wpf

<BlackCats> glad you found us

<wpf> thank you

<fab> You can do stripes with Marvy markers on the brayer for some cool looks too

<Jambalaya> that sounds like fun

<fab> You need really wet markers

<BlackCats> yes, turn you card on the diagonal and brayer again for a plaid look

<Regina> and have to huff on it.

<Jambalaya> or spritz it

<fab> I got my mystery package from Evo

<Regina> diagonal makes a nice argyle plaid.

<fab> This is gonna be fun

<cak> Dee G also puts multiple images of a stamp on a brayer and then transfers it to paper for a nice repeating background

<Jambalaya> thats prolly what gave the idea for the rollagraphs

<cak> after inking the brayer with markers, you could put a fine mist on it too couldn't you--different look though

<Regina> Elaine puts down strips of that repositionable cover-up take from office supply stores with spaces between,

<fab> Careful not to make it runny

<BlackCats> more of a watercolor look I would think, cak

<Jambalaya> hey we need to try this

<Jambalaya> sounds dreamy

<BlackCats> yep

<Regina> brayers with rainbow pad ink, then puts the tape in opposite direction, and brayers over it again.

<fab> Got to run now, nite all

<pmstamper> nite fab.

<BlackCats> nite fab

<cak> night fab

<Jambalaya> nite fab

<BlackCats> oooh, that sounds pretty regina

<cak> that sounds lovely

<Stampverb> Folks, don't forget the Show&Tell this Thursday--a great way to share some early brayer experiments!

<Regina> She's make some wonderful papers.

<Jambalaya> yes verb!

<Stampverb> get those scans emailed 12 hours before class, though

<Jambalaya> if any of y'all try any brayer tricks, send us scans at cyberstampers@dm.net

<BlackCats> wish laine had more time so she could visit with us here, regina

<BlackCats> she does do wonderful work

<Regina> Me, too. Maybe when school's out. She just jointed Stubby's yahoo group.

<Jambalaya> yay

<BlackCats> I know. that's great!

<Regina> I was hoping she'd talk about her brayered plaids over the weekend, but they were out visiting.

<Jambalaya> well the topic is for all week

<BlackCats> ah

<Regina> I'll give her a little nudge.

<Jambalaya> i prolly should put auto reminders up, huh?

<BlackCats> yep

<Regina> That's a good idea, Jam. Topic seems to dry up by mid week.

<BlackCats> yes, regina, if she can send scans maybe you could come and talk about them

<Vyx> gotta go, have to check on little dogs at Mom's before Bob goes to bed.

<Jambalaya> k, i'll do that from now on

<Vyx> G'ngiht y'all, take care

<BlackCats> nite vyx

<cak> Night Vyx

<Jambalaya> nite vyx, thanks

<Regina> Nite Vyx

<Stampverb> nite, Vyx

<pmstamper> nite vyx.

<scout> guess I'd better scoot also. Thanks for putting pics up, BC

<BlackCats> verb, what's the addy for sending scans for Thursday's show and tell?

<BlackCats> yw, scout

<Jambalaya> thanks for sharing scout

<BlackCats> glad to help

<Jambalaya> cyberstampers@dm.net for show and tell scans

<Stampverb> hold on, i'll get it

<Stampverb> ok, thanks Jam

<BlackCats> ty jam

<Jambalaya> and PLEASE resize

<cak> what's your prefered pixel size Jamba?

<scout> If I can find the one thing I made with the scratch pens, I'll send it, but my daughter was here, had to clean and only god knows where anything is.

<cak> lol

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> 300 pixels or less, or 75 kb or less

<scout> I will also send the pic of the scratch pen so you can see it.

<cak> that's a pretty strong nesting instinct--when you start cleaning others houses!

<scout> No, she came from Denver and I had to move all my boxes off the living room floor, all the stuff off the d. room table, etc.

<Stampverb> lol

* Jambalaya woulda made hotel reservations<g>

<cak> oh! I see

<scout> Can't give her too much of a shock. It's bad enough she'll have to clear all this house out when I pop off.

<cak> (sounds like my cleaning--dash and stash in flylady voacab)

<scout> I need more rooms so that I can stash stuff

<Jambalaya> don't we all

<Stampverb> time to go--see ya next time

<cak> Night SV

<Jambalaya> nite verb

<BlackCats> nite verb

<scout> bye all.

<Stampverb> bbye

<Jambalaya> nite scout

<Jambalaya> i'm curious now to play with brayer with markers, and maybe spritz it with ww

<cak> sounds like good show and tell material

<cak> don't forget the WW too

<cak> (iow, *you* do all the work)

<Jambalaya> for sure

<Jambalaya> lol

<BlackCats> yes, sounds like a good playtime for us all

<Jambalaya> prolly won't scan well though

<cak> yahm, but you can describe it for us

<pmstamper> That is the only problem with metallics.

<Jambalaya> ya

<cak> (yahm??? yeah)

<BlackCats> 'somebody' needs to come up with a scanner designed for stampers using metallic/irridescent mediums <G>

<Jambalaya> maybe if we all started bugging hp<g>

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> start an e-mail campaign

<cak> BC or Jamba--how big is that stamp that you used on the purple card? (I've got a small one of that image, but a big one would be cool)

<Jambalaya> what purple card?

<Jambalaya> the web one?

<BlackCats> I found that placing a clamp or such under the card helps with scans but still not enough

<cak> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=6677782&uid=1026244&members=1 the second one (now)

<cak> yeah, the web one

<BlackCats> uh, that's not a very big stamp

<cak> rats, I was hoping

<BlackCats> may 1 x 2" or so

<cak> mine is a little smaller, but this might be a good addition

<Jambalaya> 1.5" x 2.75"

<Jambalaya> is the mount size

<cak> the problem with irridescent media is that they change and sparkle. You'd never get that in any one scan

<cak> (sadly)

<Jambalaya> http://www.stubbystampers.com/shopping/stamps/celebrations/halloween.html

<Jambalaya> hi Jennifer

<cak> thanks Jamba!

<Jennifer> hi

<cak> mine is more like 1 x .5"

<cak> using the two sizes together might make a nice repeat

<cak> pattern

<Jambalaya> oh ya that would be cool

<BlackCats> yeah, that sounds really neat

<BlackCats> wish I had the little one too

<Jambalaya> stubby has a lot of images, that she's done in 2 sizes, i love to use them together

<cak> it was one of my first stamping purchases--

<BlackCats> oooooh, I'll have to ask her about that one then

<cak> it really can give a lot of interest without making chaos

<Jambalaya> no, not that one

<BlackCats> rats

<Jambalaya> she only has that one in the one size

<Regina> I better go. Still have groceries in the car to bring in.

<BlackCats> that's such a good element or background stamp that having both sizes would be great

<BlackCats> nite regina

<Jambalaya> sweet dreams Regina

<cak> lol--glad you have your priorities straight Regina

<BlackCats> good to see ya

<cak> Night Regina

<Regina> Nite all. Thanks for the pix and good info.

<BlackCats> yw

<Regina> Ya'll so funny!

<BlackCats> be sure to try to come for show and tell thursday

<BlackCats> even if you can't get laine to send anything

<Regina> Hmmm. prolly be out Thur & Fri nites.

<BlackCats> ok, well, see ya again soon

<BlackCats> oh, btw, guess you got your computer fixed?

<Jambalaya> lol

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> duh

<Regina> I'll try to send a scan of a little piece of Laine's plaid. what's the www again?

<BlackCats> uh huh

<pmstamper> nite y'all. I have to get going too.

<BlackCats> cyberstampers@dm.net

<Jambalaya> cyberstampers@dm.net

<BlackCats> nite pat

<Jambalaya> nite pat, see ya soon

<BlackCats> take care, sweet dreams

<cak> (we really want that scan)

<cak> Night pm
