<Jambalaya> ok, here we go

<Jambalaya> ##################################################################################

<Jambalaya> HI Y'ALL

<Jambalaya> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=2940501&uid=1171869

<BlackCats> ooooh, very pretty jam

<Jambalaya> TY

<Phyl> I love those gorgeous

<Jambalaya> IMAGE IS FROM STUBBY STAMPERS

<Julie> oh, I love those!

<Jambalaya> I USED MOSTLY BLACK KATO CLAY

<Jambalaya> BUT ANY BRAND WILL WORK

<Jambalaya> AND YOU COULD USE OTHER COLORS TOO, BUT THE MICA POWDERS SHOW UP BEST ON BLACK

<Jambalaya> STARTING WITH PICTURE 2

<Jambalaya> CONDITION CLAY

<Jambalaya> ROLL THRU PASTA MACHINE AT THICKEST SETTING

<Jambalaya> DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE SHEET YOU MAKE, AS LONG AS IT'S BIGGER THAN YOUR STAMP

<Jambalaya> LAY THE SHEET DOWN ON A CLEAN CERAMIC TILE

<Jambalaya> PIC 3

<Jambalaya> LAY THE UM FACE DOWN ON CLAY, AND ROLL IT INTO THE CLAY EVENLY

<Jambalaya> IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN ACRYLIC ROD, USE AN ACRYLIC BLOCK, OR BRAYER, ANYTHING SO THE STAMP GETS IMPRESSED EVENLY

<Jambalaya> GENTLY PEEL THE STAMP UP OFF THE CLAY

<Jambalaya> I DID NOT USE ANY RELEASE AGENTS

<Jambalaya> PIC 5

<Jambalaya> WITH A PLASTIC CLAY TOOL, JUST TRIM OFF THE EXCESS CLAY AROUND MEDALLION

<Jambalaya> AND SMOOTH OUT THE MEDALLION

<Jambalaya> ANY QUESTIONS SO FAR?

<Stampverb> no

<Phyl> plastic clay tool?

<Jambalaya> ANY CRAFT STORE THAT SELLS CLAY WILL HAVE SETS OF CLAY TOOLS

<Phyl> and this looks like a knife?

<Jambalaya> LIKE KNIVES, CURVED A BIT

<Phyl> k gotcha

<Jambalaya> LOOK AT PIC 6 TO SEE MY MOST USED TOOL

<Jambalaya> IN PICTURE 7

<Jambalaya> YOU CAN SEE THE IMAGE IN THIS PIC

<Jambalaya> 4 MEDALLIONS FIT ON ONE 4' TILE FOR BAKING

<Jambalaya> YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO MOVE THE CLAY AROUND, SO MAKE THE MEDALLIONS RIGHT ON THE TILE IN EACH CORNER

<Jambalaya> PIC 8 SHOWS THE VARIOUS COLORS OF MICA POWDERS

<Jambalaya> I USED SEVERAL BRANDS, THEY ALL WORK GREAT ON RAW CLAY

<Jambalaya> ANY QUESTIONS?

<Stampverb> n

<BlackCats> nope, very clea

<BlackCats> oops, clear

<Phyl> ah a southerner

<Jambalaya> OK, AT THIS POINT YOU BAKE THEM

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> FOLLOW PACKAGE DIRECTIONS FOR WHATEVER BRAND OF CLAY YOU'RE USING

<Jambalaya> USING THE TILE IS GREAT, YOU JUST BAKE THE WHOLE THING

<Jambalaya> AFTER IT'S COMPLETELY COOLED, YOU CAN JUST POP THE MEDALLIONS OFF THE TILE

<Jambalaya> YOU COULD USE THESE AS IS ON A CARD

<Stampverb> best to use a glazed tile, not an unfinished one

<Jambalaya> NEXT STEP FOR PIN IS PIC 9

<Jambalaya> RIGHT VERB

<Jambalaya> ROLL A SNAKE OF BLACK CLAY, SIZE DOESN'T MATTER TOO MUCH, HOWEVER YOU LIKE IT

<Jambalaya> AND WRAP IT AROUND MEDALLION ON A CLEAN TILE

<Jambalaya> THEN PRESS INTO SNAKE USING THE SAME UM STAMP

<Jambalaya> THIS STAMP CREATED A ROPELIKE EFFECT ON THE "BEZEL"

<cak> Jambalaya, do you have any trouble only stamping into the bezel and not the medallion?

<Jambalaya> WELL THE MEDALLION HAS BEEN BAKED AT THIS POINT

<cak> oh! of course--duh

<Jambalaya> SO YOU'RE NOT GOING TO MESS IT UP

<Jambalaya> AGAIN, SMOOTH EDGES WITH THE CLAY TOOL

<Jambalaya> THEN DUST MORE MICA POWDERS ON BEZEL

<Jambalaya> BTW, I'M USING A BIG FLUFFY BRUSH TO DUST THE MICA POWDERS ON

<Jambalaya> TAP OFF EXCESS ONTO ANOTHER CLEAN TILE IF YOU WANT IT LIGHT

<Jambalaya> OK, AFTER YOU GET 2 MEDALLIONS BEZELED AND DUSTED, BAKE AGAIN

<Jambalaya> IT NEVER HURTS THE ORIGINAL CLAY TO BE REBAKED

<Jambalaya> AGAIN, AFTER IT'S COMPLETELY COOL, IT WILL JUST POP OFF THE TILE

<Jambalaya> ANY QUESTIONS?

<Phyl> so when you are dusting with this big fluffy brush

<Stampverb> lookin' good

<Phyl> does some of it go in the cracks and crannies?

<Phyl> and not stay on top?

<Jambalaya> YES PHYL, IF YOU DON'T WANT IT TO, YOU NEED TO TAP OFF MOST OF THE POWDER BEFORE YOU TOUCH THE BRUSH TO THE CLAY

<Jambalaya> IF YOU WANT IT PRETTY WELL COVERED, JUST ADD MORE POWDER

<Phyl> ok and if it goes where it is not wanted how do you get it off with a wet something or other?

<Jambalaya> NOPE, ONCE IT'S THERE, IT'S THERE<G>

<Phyl> eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

<BlackCats> if you want more control over where the powder goes use a fine detail paintbrush just barely dipped into the powder

<Jambalaya> NOT TO WORRY, ONCE YOU START MAKING THESE, IT'S HARD TO STOP, THE NEXT ONE, YOU'LL GO LIGHTER<G>

<Phyl> I am a pearlex maniac

<BlackCats> me too

<Stampverb> if we have time later I can tell how to do reverse pearlex

<Jambalaya> I THINK I MADE ABOUT 100 OF THESE, AND USED THEM AS CONVENTION TRADING PINS

<Phyl> stuff has a mind of it's own

<Phyl> bet the ladies loved them

<Jambalaya> OK, AT THIS POINT, YOU COULD JUST GLUE A PINBACK ON IT AND CALL IT DONE, BUT

<Jambalaya> THAT WOULDN'T HAVE A FINISHED LOOK

<Jambalaya> JUMP DOWN TO PIC 13

<Phyl> jumping

<Jambalaya> I RAN MORE CLAY THROUGH PASTA MACHINE AT ALMOST THE THINNEST SETTING

<Jambalaya> NOT SO THIN THAT IT JUST PUCKERS

<Jambalaya> BUT THIN

<Jambalaya> JUST LAY THIS DOWN ON THE BACK OF MEDALLION, AND TRIM AROUND IT WITH A PLASTIC CLAY TOOL

<Jambalaya> PUSH IT DOWN WITH FINGERS AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO AIR BUBBLES

<Jambalaya> KEEP A PIN HANDY TO POP BUBBLES

<Jambalaya> DON'T WORRY ABOUT FINGERPRINTS

<Jambalaya> MARK WHERE YOU WANT YOUR PIN THEN PUSH IT DOWN INTO RAW CLAY

<Jambalaya> USE SOME OF THE SCRAP FROM THIN SHEET TO BURY THE PINBACK

<Jambalaya> USE TOOLS, FINGERS WHATEVER TO SMOOTH OUT THE CLAY AROUND THE PIN

<Jambalaya> THEN USING THAT SAME UM STAMP, PRESS INTO CLAY ALL OVER THE BACK

<Jambalaya> THIS HIDES FINGERPRINTS AND GIVES A NICE FINISHED SURFACE

<Jambalaya> YOU CAN DUST MORE MICA IF YOU WISH, BUT NOT NEEDED ON BACK

<Jambalaya> IF YOU HAVE A SMALL SIGNATURE STAMP, STAMP IT IN NOW

<cak> I like that. Makes things go so much faster if you don't have to be so careful when handling the clay

<BlackCats> right

<Jambalaya> NOW FOR THIS FINAL BAKING, THE PIN WILL BE FACE DOWN

<BlackCats> where did you get your small signature stamp?

<Jambalaya> SO YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMETHING UNDER IT SO CLAY DOESN'T GET MARRED ON THE FRONT

<Jambalaya> I USED AN AOL TIN FILLED WITH CORNSTARCH

<Jambalaya> FROM STUBBY STAMPERS<G>

<BlackCats> ah, of course, lol

<BlackCats> would quilt batting work for this?

<Stampverb> yep

<Jambalaya> SOME FOLKS PREFER TO USE BATTING OR POLYFIL TO BAKE ON, BUT THE FIRST TIME I TRIED THAT IT BURNED AND SCARED THE BEJEEBES OUTTA ME

<Jambalaya> SO I USE CORNSTARCH

<BlackCats> ah, good point

<Jambalaya> SAFETY IS ALWAYS MY FIRST CONCERN

<Stampverb> hmmmm, the fiberfill has never done that for me--is your oven temp. accurate?

<Jambalaya> CORNSTARCH CAN'T CATCH FIRE<G>

<Jambalaya> YES VERB IT IS

<Stampverb> ok, just thinking

<Jambalaya> I ALWAYS USE A THERMOMETER WHILE I BAKE

<Phyl> I hope it is an oral one

<Jambalaya> I'M NOT SAYING YOU CAN'T USE THE BATTING, JUST EXPLAINING WHY I DON'T

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> OK, THE PINS AT THE BOTTOM, ARE THE SAME BASIC PRINCIPLES

<cak> (all I can think of now is: "No one *expects* the Spanish Inquisition")

<Jambalaya> JUST TOOK IT ONE STEP FURTHER MAKING A LARGER BACKGROUND

<Phyl> you is in deep trouble cak

<Jambalaya> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=2940501&uid=1171869

<cak> hiya Joy

<BlackCats> hi joy

<Jambalaya> ON THESE, I LAID OUT A THICK SHEET OF CLAY

<joy> sorry to be late

<Jambalaya> IMPESSED THE STAMP JUST ENOUGH TO CUT OUT A HOLE

<Phyl> her pictures are greatJoy

<Jambalaya> THEN INSERTED A BAKED MEDALLION

<Jambalaya> PUT A BEZEL ON IT JUST LIKE ON THE SMALLER ONES

<Jambalaya> AND FINISHED THE BACK THE SAME WAY

<Jambalaya> I MADE THE HOLES BEFORE BAKING, BUT THEY COULD BE DRILLED LATER IF YOU FORGET

<Jambalaya> THE FRINGE IS JUST CRAFT WIRE WITH ASSORTED GLASS BEADS

<Jambalaya> OK, ANY QUESTIONS?

<joy> can you start again

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> UHHHHH

<Jambalaya> NO

<BlackCats> those last pins are just absolutely gorgeous

<joy> this looks so good I know you'll do this again

<Stampverb> the lastest one is my fave

<Stampverb> you have my addy, right Jam? <g>

<Phyl> The beads really fancy it up nice

<Jambalaya> I MADE SOME THAT WERE REALLY TOO BIG FOR PINS, BUT WOULD BE GREAT ON THE COVER OF A BOOK, OR AS A PURSE PIN

<Stampverb> purse pin? wazzat?

* Vyx is a lucky gal who has a big one and a small one.

<Jambalaya> JUST A DECORATIVE ORNAMENT ON A PURSE

<joy> they really are gorgeous!

<Phyl> sacre bleu Vyx

<Vyx> I put the large one on my purse, so... purse ornaments. :)

<Julie> these are great Jam!

<Jambalaya> YA THATS WHAT MADE ME THINK OF IT VYX<G>

<Stampverb> ah, I get it--y'all mean FABRIC purses?

<BlackCats> oooh, lucky vyx, I just have one of the small ones

<Jambalaya> I DON'T REALLY WEAR BIG PINS MYSELF, SO A PURSE ORNAMENT MADE LOTS OF SENSE TO ME<G>

<BlackCats> and it is one of my treasures

<cak> these pictures, as usual with mica powders, don't do justice to the pieces

<BlackCats> right

<Julie> these would make great necklaces too

* Phyl is going treasure hunting Monica

<BlackCats> lol

<Jambalaya> RIGHT, AND THAT WAS MY OLD CAMERA TOO

<Jambalaya> IF I MAKE THESE AGAIN, I'LL TAKE NEW PICS WITH BETTER CAMERA

<BlackCats> hmmm, sounds like another class to me <G>

<BlackCats> don't y'all think so?

<Jambalaya> JOY, THE STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS ARE ON EACH PIC WHEN YOU OPEN IT

<joy> yeah

<cak> I love the step-by-steps. they really help me

<Phyl> yes those are great

<Jambalaya> OK, I'M DONE<G> THANKS FOR COMIN Y'ALL

<Vyx> Sis does good instructions!

<BlackCats> thanks for another great class, jam

<Stampverb> thanks, Jam!

<Julie> hmmm...more stamp shopping I gotta do :)

<Phyl> thanks jam beautiful

<Vyx> thanks Sis!

<BlackCats> yep

<Jambalaya> look at 3827

<Jambalaya> on that page

<BlackCats> oooooh! great, just got that one

<cak> I saw that one earlier--love it

<Jambalaya> 3821 was also made with clay in mind

<Jambalaya> but it's a rectangle
