<TarotMama> i got a newsletter that said "Punches are out, die cutting is in"

<scout> now that you've said that, let's hope they don't or you will get all this blame mail.

<BC-away> eh, I think the personal die cutting machines are a fad that will pass

<BC-away> they are just way too expensive for most

<cak> I don't see them as having that much overlap--it's a matter of size (or am I really uneducated?)

<TarotMama> depends

<TarotMama> hi

<Janet> Isis! depends?

<TarotMama> yep

<Janet> (just makes me think of that question, does Bob Dole wear boxers or briefs?)

<BC-away> so, isis, talk about difference of die cutting machines and punches please

<pmstamper> hi fab.

<Janet> oh yes, please do!

<Jambalaya> wait

<BC-away> elaborate on your response of 'depends'

<TarotMama> price is a big consideration

<Janet> (I lust for a machine, but I'm not sure why)

<BC-away> prolly cuz it's the latest toy being raved about janet

<TarotMama> do we do the caps thang?

<Janet> yes, please

* Jambalaya tosses the caps to TarotMama

<TarotMama> PUNCHES CAN EASILY BECOME DULL

<BC-away> most seem to come dull

<TarotMama> AND THEY NEED TO BE TAKNE CARE OF MORE THAN THE MANUFACTOERS ARE WILLING TO ADMIT

<Jambalaya> especially big ones

<Janet> lol what I was thinking, I buy 'em dull

<fab> And some seem to want to bend the paper

<Janet> cuz they're dull

<TarotMama> THE PLASTIC HOUSINGS OFTEN CAN CRACK

<TarotMama> SO

<fab> But the results can be such fun

<TarotMama> IF YOU GET ONE THAT'S DULL, WHAT DO YOU DO?

<fab> Punch on foil?

<Janet> uhhh i go buy another different kind<g>

<Jambalaya> we can't repeat that language in here

<BC-away> I know, I know <G>

<TarotMama> OK

<TarotMama> LOL MONICA

<TarotMama> SPEAK

<BC-away> TM taught me to make a sandwich of wax paper, foil, wax paper

<BC-away> and to use that before using a new punch

<TarotMama> YES

<Janet> ooo to punch into?

<TarotMama> YES JANET

<BC-away> and use that whenever I go to use the punch again

<Janet> cool!

<BC-away> works like a charm!

<Jambalaya> every time??

<TarotMama> BEFORE YOU PUNCH ANYTHING, EACH TIME USE THE SANDWICH

<fab> Hmmm, I had heard about using those separately, but not together

<Janet> oh and leave a big sammich inside the punches box(es)

<TarotMama> IT'S LIKE USING A REALLY GOOD KNIFE

<TarotMama> YOU HONE IT BEFORE USE, EACH TIME LIKE A GOOD CHEF DOES

<Jambalaya> ahhhh

<BlackCats> makes sense

<TarotMama> FAB, THE ROBLEM WITH THE PUNCH IS BOT A NEED FOR LUBRICATION, AND A NEED FOR HONING

<Janet> I keep my whetstone hanging in the kitchen (above the non-working oven), so should keep the punch sammich inside the punches boxes

<fab> How many times do I need to punch the sammich

<TarotMama> THE WAX PAPER LUBES THE PUNCH, THE FOIL HONES IT AND THE NEXT WAX Paper lubes it agin

<joy> do the sammich

<BlackCats> just once fab unless the punch is giving you trouble

<fab> ty

<BlackCats> then do it a couple of times til it punches easily

<TarotMama> fab, do it til the punch feels slick and there are no places where it sticks or drags thru the sammich

<Jambalaya> and if you're punching a ton of stuff, do you need to punch the sammich occasionally inbetween?

<fab> ty

<BlackCats> caps please isis

<TarotMama> YES JAM

<TarotMama> GOT IT BC

<BlackCats> ty

<fab> This is news I can use!

<BlackCats> if you are using a geometric shape like a circle, square, etc

<BlackCats> save the foil if it is a good punch and use it as an embellishment

<Jambalaya> and the waxed paper too

<BlackCats> right, those are good as masks

<fab> I think that could be fun with non geometrics too

<fab> foil flowers and such

<BlackCats> true, if it isn't too detailed that it gets distorted

<Jambalaya> oh ya especially with the alcohol inks getting so popular

<Janet> ooo cuz i could bend up the foil and make it a 3-d deal

<BlackCats> yep

* Jambalaya tosses the caps to TarotMa_l

<BlackCats> haven't tried this idea but you could prolly stamp on the foil shapes using something like stazon

<BlackCats> stamp a background pattern on them

<BlackCats> rats, we lost TM

<Janet> that's one of my questions, what to do with these punches. I buy them cuz they look neato, but I don't use them

<Jambalaya> it's storming where isis is, she'll be back if she can

<BlackCats> she is having a bad storm tonight and keeps getting dropped

<Janet> I wish it would rain here.

<Jambalaya> me too janet

<BlackCats> wb TM

<TarotMa_l> THIS IS FRUSTRATING

<Janet> yay! Isis is back! (nice front, too.)

<BlackCats> yeah, I know

<joy> Janet, have you seen those books "Punch you Art out"?

<Jambalaya> i've punched tons of punchies out of scrap, but then i don't seem to get around to using them

<TarotMa_l> WRE YOU DISCUSSING SUING THE FOIL?

<TarotMa_l> USING

<Janet> I haven't looked, are they good to browse through?

<BlackCats> yes, and now talking about ways to use punches too

<TarotMa_l> THEY HAVE GREAT IDEAS JANET

<fab> Yeah, some neat ideas

<Janet> I feed them to the dog sometimes.

<TarotMa_l> I HAVE ALL FOUR OF THEM

<Janet> not the book, the punched pieces of waxed paper

<TarotMa_l> DID YOU COME UP WITH THE OTHER TWO STEPS FOR GETTING YOUR PUNCH SHARPENED?

<Janet> (he's an art lover)

<Jambalaya> nope

<TarotMa_l> OK

<BlackCats> no, waited to see if you'd be right back

<Jambalaya> what other 2 steps?

<BlackCats> yes, do tell

<TarotMa_l> NEXT STEP IS TO FLATTEN A METAL SOFTDRINK CAN

<fab> please

<TarotMa_l> AND PUNCH THRU THAT

<Jambalaya> ooooo

<BlackCats> ooooh, that would be cool

<TarotMa_l> THE HEAVIER ALUMINUM IS GREAT FOR THE PUNCH

<fab> you can tool on those

<Jambalaya> now those punchies i'd be sure to use<g>

<TarotMa_l> EXACTLY FAB

<TarotMa_l> THOSE MAKE MARVELOUS DOO DADS

<joy> so flattened = 2 sides right?

<TarotMa_l> THEY ARE TOOLABLE, AND THEY ARE PAINTABLE

<fab> I did copper tooling as a child

<Janet> surely I can figure out how to use those

<BlackCats> hmmmm, need to go diving into the recycling bag <G>

<TarotMa_l> LAST, IF THAT DOESN'T FIX YOUR PROBLEM IS

<TarotMa_l> SANDPAPER

<Janet> heh or just wait an hour and rinse out the one that's on your desk you're drinking from

<fab> fine or rough?

<TarotMa_l> FAB, START MEDIUM GRIT

<BlackCats> drink?! sodas?! yuck!

<Janet> okay, wait for mine then<g>

<TarotMa_l> BE SURE, AND i MEAN SURE TO LUBE THE PUNCH A LOT BEOFE YOU START THE SANDPAPER

<fab> I prefer herb tea

<TarotMa_l> BEER CANS WORK GREAT

<TarotMa_l> AND ARE BIG

<BlackCats> like a dozen times or more?

<TarotMa_l> FIND A GUY WITH A BIG GUT AND FOLLOW HIM TO HIS GARBAGE

<Janet> well and I prefer fine wine, but we're talking reality here. I drink several diet cokes a day

<TarotMa_l> OK

<TarotMa_l> SO YOU START WITH MEDIUM GRIT

<TarotMa_l> TRY PUNCHING A COULD OF TIMES

<TarotMa_l> THEN GET FINER AND FINER WITH THE GRIT

<TarotMa_l> THE ONLY REASON IT WILL NOT WORK IS IF THE PUNCH IS BROKEN

<TarotMa_l> AND THE TWO SIDES ARE NOT LINED UP

<TarotMa_l> OR

<TarotMa_l> THERE IS SOMETHING STUCK IN THE PUNCH

<fab> Do you finish off with wax paper?

<TarotMa_l> IF THERE IS THEN YOU GOTTA MOVE TO PHASE 4

<scout> Gee, does a 2 liter Diet Pepsi bottle work? I drink a lot of those.

<TarotMa_l> WHICH IS TAKING THE PUNCH APART

<Janet> yikes! I've been too scared to do that.

<BlackCats> be sure to watch the order you take it apart so you can reverse it

<scout> me, too

<Jambalaya> i've taken punches apart, but not on purpose<g>

<fab> Some of them fall apart

<joy> woll we end up with more pieces to it when we are done?

<TarotMa_l> I DON'T SUGGEST DOING THIS, ALTHO I HAVE BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL WITH A COUPLE OF PUNCHES BEING TAKEN APRT AND PUT BACK TOGHER

<Janet> LOL well me too on that. and then alla the pieces fall on the floor and I don't have a prayer of putting them back in order

<TarotMa_l> THERE ARE A COUPLE OF PLACES ONLINE THAT CAN TALK YOU THRU IT

<fab> I have assemebled a few that fell apart

<BlackCats> I had a punch jam and just couldn't get the paper out without taking it apart

<scout> Well, I'd have to set up the video camera, cause with my memory, I'd never get it back in order.

<TarotMa_l> SCOUT THAT IS A GREAT IDEA

<Janet> it really is!

<TarotMa_l> OR TAKE STILL PICS

<Janet> I've lined them up in order, but at least twice an animal has jumped on my line-up and then it's trash

<BlackCats> once I got the jammed paper out and reassembled, I did TM's trick with the sammich several times and it's been fine ever since

<TarotMa_l> GOOD BC!!

<Janet> BC I stand in awe of you

<BlackCats> lol

<scout> you could have hubby take progressive pics with the digital camera, but if he's like mine, he would spend the whole time

<BlackCats> big punches aren't cheap <G>

<fab> How do you start to take it apart?

<scout> telling you it wasn't going to work, I shouldn't be doing it, etc.

<TarotMa_l> EVEN IF YOU HAVE A PUNCH THAT HAS PUNCED WELL FOR YEARS, i SUGGEST DOING THE SANDWICH OCCASIONALLY

<BlackCats> right

<Janet> mine just goes off on his why do you have this what does it do why do you never use these etc etc etc

<joy> I gotta go buy stock in wax paper and aluminum foil fast

<TarotMa_l> OK, DHS ASIDE..

<BlackCats> even if it is punching ok, using the sammich will make it easier to punch

<TarotMa_l> YES BC

<TarotMa_l> AND WILL KEEP YOUR PUNCH ALIVE FOR A LONG TIME

<Jambalaya> they're.....alive??

<Janet> (dead punch pieces make cool collage elements)

<fab> Not for me

<TarotMa_l> BY THE WAY, ALMOST ANYTHING THAT FITS INSIDE THE MOUTH OF THE PUNCH WILL WORK WITH THE PUNCHES

<BlackCats> lol jam

<Janet> alive, neglected and abused, Jam<g>

<fab> So where do you begin to take one apart

<TarotMa_l> I HAVE LEARNED HOW TO PUNCH TISSUE PAPER

<TarotMa_l> AND CLOTH

<Janet> HOW?? (after you answer fab)

<joy> i'm in awe now

<Jambalaya> wow

<Janet> me too

<cak> I've punched that smooth rubber between um stamps on plates

<scout> So I guess this isn't the old...."don't use my good sewing scissors to cut paper or I'll ......"

<TarotMa_l> TISSUE HAS TO BE SANDWICHED BETWEEN TWO PAGES OF TEXT WEIGHT PAPER

<Janet> (scout, that's still a good threat to keep 'em in line<g>)

<BlackCats> really cak? and you got a good image?

<cak> well, DR did

<BlackCats> hmmmm

<TarotMa_l> DR?

<cak> I've done leaf punches and round ones

<TarotMa_l> DOCTOR?

<BlackCats> dh

<TarotMa_l> O

<cak> my husband--he's the strong one on fthe family

<Janet> more like bookmaker extraordinaire

<cak> (he is)

<TarotMa_l> THE TRICK IS TO MAKE THE PUNCH HAPPEN FAST

<BlackCats> I use that technique to punch enchanted ink's tissue papers

<Janet> oh and having a good sharp and lubed punch

<TarotMa_l> i OFTEN STAND ON MY PUNCHES

<Janet> (Fab, that's the answer, have me stand on your punch and it will fall apart<g>)

<TarotMa_l> THAT GETS A LOT OF POER INTO THE ACTUAL STAMPING

<TarotMa_l> POWER IS THE TRICK

<BlackCats> right, works great for big stamps

<Jambalaya> i got an arbor press, that helps me a lot

<fab> What about using one of those lever tools to assist you?

<TarotMa_l> WITH CLOTH, i SPRAY A PIECE OF PAPER WITH NON PERMANENT SPRAY GLUE

<TarotMa_l> I HAVE ALL THRE KINDS OF TOOLS FOR STAMPING

<Jambalaya> that doesn't gum up the punch??

<joy> never heard of that spray

<BlackCats> repositionable spray glue, joy

<TarotMa_l> JAM, I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH GUMMING

<TarotMa_l> IF i HAD ONE, i WOULD USE ONE OF THE PRODUCTS THAT DESOLVES GLUES

<Janet> my mind is spinning. fast and easy applique cutting out

<TarotMa_l> YES JANET

<BlackCats> yep

<joy> I use a little un du on a q tip when I do get it sticky and walla

<TarotMa_l> ALSO YOU CAN GET UP TO 3 INCH SQUARES FOR QUILTING

<Janet> I hate cutting out applique pieces

<BlackCats> or WD40

<TarotMa_l> NO

<TarotMa_l> NEVER WD 40

<BlackCats> ah?

<Janet> oooooo yes! quilt pieces the easy way!

<TarotMa_l> AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE

<BlackCats> why?

<Janet> but I live and die by WD40

<joy> i gotta look for some spray now

<TarotMa_l> WD 40 LEAVES A PERMANENT SILICONE LAYER THAT IS HARD TO REMOVE

<BlackCats> ooooohhhh

<TarotMa_l> SOME THINGS LOVE TO STICK TO THE SILICONE

<fab> good to know

<TarotMa_l> IT'S LIKE YOU NEFVER USE IT IN A LOCK

<TarotMa_l> ONLY GRAPHITE

<Jambalaya> cux wd40 will hide in the punch and won't come out till you think it's clean and go to stamp on good paper?

<joy> bet that would mess up vellum

<pmstamper> i would think it would leave residue on paper too?

<BlackCats> yep, didn't know that and now I know why I sometimes have problems with it

<Janet> I'm glad I was here tonight

<TarotMa_l> YOU ALLHAVE IT RIGHT

<TarotMa_l> I HAVE TRIED GRAPHIE ALSO

<TarotMa_l> NOT A GOOD IDEA

<BlackCats> hmmmm

<TarotMa_l> THINK PENCIL LEAD

<BlackCats> good to know

<TarotMa_l> AND PAPER

<BlackCats> ah, yeah, makes sense

<TarotMa_l> IT WAS A "DUH" MOMENT

<BlackCats> lol

<TarotMa_l> I AM HOPING THAT YOU PUNCH UPSIDE SOWN WHEN POSSIOBLE

<TarotMa_l> YES?

<BlackCats> yes

<Jambalaya> yes

<fab> I often do that to save paper

<joy> yes, but it's harder on my hand

<Janet> uhhh

<TarotMa_l> SO YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE PUNCH IS GOING TO DO IT'S THING?

<BlackCats> yep

<fab> You can punch closer together

<TarotMa_l> SO IF IT'S HARD ON YR HAND

<Janet> oh. that. yeah for placement. but then I've always flipped it back over to punch. it's good to punch it upside down?

<TarotMa_l> PUT DOTS OF PNCIL AROUND TH OUTSIDE OF THE TOP OF THE PUNCH, ONCE YOU HAVE T WHERE YOU WANT IT,

<TarotMa_l> TURN IT OVER AND REALLIGN THE PUNCH AND THEN GO POW

<BlackCats> you can make crescent moons using a circle punch when you use it upside down

<joy> wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

<TarotMa_l> I TEND TO PUNCH UPSIDE DOWN ALL THE TIME

<TarotMa_l> THAT WAY i CAN SEE WHAN THE PUNCH IS JUST BEGINNING TO STICK

<Jambalaya> or, to save your hands, use an acrylic block, or block of wood between your hand and the punch

<TarotMa_l> YES JAM

<Janet> i do that, helps me get more strength on the punch

<BlackCats> or put it on the floor and step on it

<TarotMa_l> YES BC

<joy> that seems so out of control to me- stepping on it

<TarotMa_l> COOK POLYCLAY IS PUNCHABLE

<TarotMa_l> DID YA KNOW THAT?

<BlackCats> really?!!!

<TarotMa_l> YEP

<BlackCats> oooooohhhhhh

<TarotMa_l> IT MUST BE CURED

<joy> how thick?

<fab> and so is funfoam

<BlackCats> right

<TarotMa_l> REMEMBER THE WIDTH OF THE MOUTH OF THE PUNCH?

<Janet> oh cool

<Jambalaya> how about chipboard?

<TarotMa_l> IT'S WHY A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE MOVED TO DIECUTTING

<Janet> not with this shoulder, Jams

<BlackCats> somehow I wouldn't think you'd get a good edge on chipboard

<TarotMa_l> I THINK IT WOULD DEPEND ON THE ACTUAL TYPE OF FIBERBOARD

<TarotMa_l> i HAVE PUNCED VENEER SUCCESSFULLY FOR DOING A WOOD MOSAIC

<Jambalaya> i can use arbor press, so pressure is not the prob

<fab> What is an arbor presss?

<BlackCats> try it and let us know, jam <G>

<TarotMa_l> I WOULD TRY IT WITH A SRUDY PUNCH FIST JAM

<Jambalaya> i just don't wanna hurt the punch

<Janet> oooo wood veneer!

<Jambalaya> like an industrial strength punch buddy

<TarotMa_l> IF YOU HURT A PUNCH ON PURPOSE, THE PUNCH GODDESS GETS REAL MAD AND SENDS PUNCH FAIRIES TO GIT YA

<joy> and Jam let us know how that works?

<BlackCats> uh huh, that idea leads to lots of other ideas

<Janet> picture wood veneer, a fancy corner punch and homemade wood frames

<BlackCats> lol, TM

<TarotMa_l> YES JANET

<Janet> utoh. punch fairies. that sounds badder than the pinch fairies

<BlackCats> lol

<TarotMa_l> IF YOU GET REALLY THIN VENEERS, THEN YOU CAN DO VERY FANCY PUNCHES

<BlackCats> cool

<Janet> and end up with two end products, fitting the punched out pieces into the mortisse left behind in each case

<BlackCats> yep

<TarotMa_l> THEM PUNCH FAIRIES ARE NOT FUN... THEY SCREAM ALOT AND THROW RAINBOW PUNCHIES AT YA

<fab> like inlay

<Janet> okay, I got my money's worth already tonight. I have uses for my punches now!

<TarotMa_l> YES, FAB, THAT IS WHAT i WAS DOING

<BlackCats> the mortisse is also good to use for reverse masking

<Jambalaya> this is an arbor press

<Jambalaya> http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=3552

<Janet> rainbow punchies sounds good, but the screaming is bad

<TarotMa_l> JANET, REMEMBER YOUR PUNCHES HAVE TO BE VERY SHARP

<TarotMa_l> AND SHARPENED OFTEN WITH VENEER

<Janet> yeah or I'll splinter my veneer

<TarotMa_l> RIGHT

<fab> Wow, that is some piece of equipment

<TarotMa_l> I FOUND THAT I CUT OUT SQUARES FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL PUNCH I WAS GOING TO DO, RATHER THAN PUNCH THE SHEET LIKE IT WAS PAPER

<Janet> ya know what? the other day I went to the DH's pharmacy and noticed that the shopping center behind him has a Harbor Freight!

<Jambalaya> what used to take all the strength i had standing up, i can do on that with one finger

<Janet> I'll be visiting the pharmacy more often now<g>

<joy> a ton???

<Jambalaya> it's a ton of leverage

<Janet> yeah, I got a ton pressure arbor press

<Janet> for like $20 and change

<Jambalaya> vyx explains this better than i do<g>

<BlackCats> rats, lost her again

<BlackCats> it's a matter of leverage

<joy> Jam you use that with your punches?

<Janet> and while I was there, I got pieces of lucite to distribute the pressure

<Jambalaya> now don't order one on line, cuz shipping would kill ya

<BlackCats> wb TM

<Tarotmama> TY

<Jambalaya> i do joy

<joy> dang

<BlackCats> that's on my wish list

<Janet> no! come visit me and we'll go visit my DH's pharmacy<g>

<joy> we need you and vyx to explain that sometime

<Jambalaya> i'm pretty sure there is a harbor frieght in jackson, joy

<Tarotmama> I THINK THAT IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A LOT OF PUNCHIES, I CAN SEE WHY SOMEONE WOULD MOVE TO A DIECUTTER

<joy> i was at it Mon

<Janet> there's one close to Dallas :)

<Janet> how spendy are the different die cuts for it tho?

<Jambalaya> very<g>

<joy> but I got all these punches to use

<Tarotmama> YOU DON'T NEED TO DO THE MAINTAINENCE

<Tarotmama> AND THEY ARE FAST

<BlackCats> yeah, no need to get a diecutter unless you really have a lot of punches to do

<Tarotmama> I FIND THE DIES VERY EXPENSIVE

<Janet> it would be worth it to cut out quilt pieces, tho

<Janet> and think of all the paper quilt backgrounds I could make, too!

<Tarotmama> AND IF YOU WANT TO DO THE BIGGER DIES, THAT MAKE BOXES AND ENVELOPES, ETC, I SUGGEST FINDING A STORE THAT HAS ONE AND USING THIERS

<BlackCats> try to find a scrapbook store that will let you use their dies and cutter

<fab> That sounds good to me

<Tarotmama> GET OUT OF MY MIND BC!

<Janet> a scrapbook place? can't I catch cooties in there?

<joy> lol

<BlackCats> lol, sorry, TM

<Tarotmama> THE LARGE CUTTERS ARE.. WELL, YOU WILL SUCK IN AIR FOR A FEW MINUTES

* Jambalaya Bops Janet

<Janet> I'm skeered of the wimmin in those places.

<Tarotmama> AND THE DIES ARE TO DIE FOR

<fab> And you need to have space to keep all that

<BlackCats> yeah, but it is a good place to find paper tho

<Tarotmama> YES FAB

<fab> And room to use it

<Janet> well, I just need to convince my sister she needs one for her quilt store

<BlackCats> right

<Tarotmama> IT'S KINDA DISAPPOINTING TO GO IN AND FIND THEY DON'T HAVE THE DIE YOU WANT

<fab> good plan, Janet

<Janet> heh and I'll see her this weekend while I'm fresh and enthused.

<Tarotmama> SANDY GENOVESE HAS SPOILED ME INTO THINKING EVERYONE HAS WHAT i WANT

<fab> I'm still looking for a gum ball machine die

<Janet> for quilt pieces and appliques

<BlackCats> yeah, my local scrap store doesn't have a good selection at all

<Tarotmama> RIGHT BC

<BlackCats> I thought for sure they would have a tag die but nope

<Tarotmama> THAT IS WHY SOME PEOPLE HAVE MOVED TO THE WIZARD

<fab> What wizard?

<BlackCats> those are cute but just way too pricey for me

<Janet> give me some time and the quilt store in Bartlesville Okla. will have everything =I= like<g>

<Tarotmama> MYSELF, ALTHO I LOVE DIES, I FIND MOST OF THEM LIMITING

<Janet> (she's already selling Evo templates to her quilters)

<joy> one of the fun things to do is punch like 2 butterflies in velum and glue the first one down and then glue the second to it only in the center so you can make the wings 3d

<Tarotmama> GOOD!

<BlackCats> oh, good idea joy

<Tarotmama> YES JOY

<Janet> oooo Joy! and in vellum!

<Janet> ooo wonder if I could sammich some mylar between cardstock to do butterfly wings?

<BlackCats> prolly

<Tarotmama> I THINK THAT IF YOU WANT TO REALLY CRAFT A LOT OF LARGE CUT THINGS, MOVING BACKWARDS TO STENCILS IS A GREAT IDEA

<joy> why not, now that we know the secrets

<Tarotmama> JANET, NOT CARDSTAOCK

<Tarotmama> MYLAR AND SIMPLE PAPER WILL SANDWICH AND PUNCH

<scout> how would you make the 2nd pair stand up, Janet. Isn't mylar pretty floppy?

<Janet> utoh, what do i use for the bread part then?

<BlackCats> anything flimsy just sammich between cardstock or printing paper

<Janet> cool! much cheaper than cardstock!

<Tarotmama> THE BREAD IS THE PAPER

<Jambalaya> copy paper

<Tarotmama> RECYCLED PAPER WORJKS FINE

<BlackCats> yep

<Janet> i got plenty of that for sure. I've been saving bill envelopes, junk mail, all sorts of stuff lately.

<Janet> I didn't know why, but now I do. for punch bread.

<BlackCats> wow, TM, you're just a wealth of information about punches!

<joy> thank you TM for all the great info!

<Tarotmama> ALSO, IF YOU ARE A STAMP MAKER, YOU CAN USE THE PUNCHIE TO CUT OUT A MEDIUM THAT IS CARVABLE AND MAKE A DETAILED IMAGE TO PUNCH

<Janet> yes! Isis! we need more Isis classes!!

<Tarotmama> LOL

<Tarotmama> WE DO!

<Jambalaya> we do

<Janet> I'm serious!

<Tarotmama> LOLOLOL

<joy> we're all serious

<fab> What is both carveable and punchable? I like the idea...

<Janet> am I doing a class next week?

<Tarotmama> LET ME MOVE AND RECOVER FROM THAT AND WEE SHALL SEE

<BlackCats> great! thanks so very much for coming tonight, Tarotmama

<Jambalaya> yes janet

<Janet> Jams, it will be the intro to that wednesday night series I promised cak

<Janet> "working with color"

<Jambalaya> Tarotmama, thanks so much, we all learned stuff tonight

<BlackCats> this was a great discussion class, so many new ideas for me to try out

<joy> yummm

<Janet> (for uh i think five weeks after this)

<fab> What is both carveable and punchable, please?

<cak> Thank you everyone! especially TM

<pmstamper> Shucks, I wanted to know that too fab.

<joy> we need to give her some duck tape

<fab> I hope she gets back here

<Janet> it was awesome, Isis! I have new ideas. ways to fix my old punches and motivation to get my sister to drop a couple thou on stuff I want

<joy> lol, your poor sister

<cak> like the pink stuff from Speedball?

<BlackCats> think she may have been talking about the sheets of stuff for block printing fab

<pmstamper> I think maybe she meant punch out paper of shape and trace it on to carvable medium? Then you could add your own details.

<BlackCats> yes, speedball

<BlackCats> yes, pat, ty

<fab> Hmmmm, that is too thick to punch out

<BlackCats> no, you don't punch that

<fab> I wonder

<BlackCats> you punch your shape out of paper

<fab> ok

<fab> I can do that

<BlackCats> use repositionable glue to adhere it to the speedball rubber

<BlackCats> then carve your stamp

<joy> so where do you find spray repositionable ?

<fab> punch it from a post it note

<fab> on the glue strip

<BlackCats> michael's has it in the scrapbook area joy

<joy> ty

<Janet> Joy, I just use the spray adhesive, but let it dry before sticking it to anything

<Janet> so no residue

<Janet> and it doesn't stick terribly tight

<Janet> that 3m stuff or whatever brand you like

<BlackCats> wb TM

<Tarotmama> ty

<Janet> She's back! We still have Qs, Isis!

<Jambalaya> wb isis

* joy hands out duck tape

<pmstamper> yeah, glad you are back, TM

<Tarotmama> lol @ joy

<fab> Tarot, what did you mean by punchable and carveable?

<joy> we really wanted to thatnk you for the great info!

<Tarotmama> fun foamis punchable

<Tarotmama> BUT NOT CARVEABLE

<Tarotmama> RUBBER ERASERS ARE CARVEABLE

<Tarotmama> BUT NOT PUNCHABLE

<fab> Soooo

<Tarotmama> SO IF FOR EXAMPLE, YOU WANT TO HAVE A LEAF STAMP WITH THE VEINS

<Tarotmama> YOU PUNCH THE LEAF IN CARDSTOCK

<Tarotmama> AND TRACE THE SHAPE ONTO THE RUBBER

<Tarotmama> YOU ALSO DECIDE IF YOU WAN T THE HAVE THE VEINS BE STAMPED

<Tarotmama> OR THE BODY OF THE LEAF, WITH THE VEINS AS SHADOW

<Tarotmama> AND THEN CARVE THAT OUT

<Tarotmama> AM I CONNECTED?

<BlackCats> yes

<Jambalaya> yes

<BlackCats> good idea

<Tarotmama> K

<fab> yes, go on

<joy> lol, we were so intent on you idea

<Janet> I'm wif ya now!

<fab> We were just waiting

<fab> for you to finish

<Tarotmama> I FIND THAT THE WORST PART OF PUNCHIES IS THAT i HAVE TO DRAW AND PAINT THME OVER AND OVER

<Tarotmama> SO NOW i HAVE SOME STAMPS i MADE THAT DO THE BASIC WORK FOR ME

<BlackCats> cool

<fab> Do you stamp first and then punch?

<Tarotmama> FOR EXAMPLE, i DO A LOT OF QUILLING AND USE PUNCHED FLOWERS WITH QUILLED ONES

<Tarotmama> I STAMP AND COLOR MY STAMP FIRST, THEN PUNCH IT

<fab> ty

<Tarotmama> YOU RE WELCOME

<Janet> whoa. you got good linin' up eyes

<Tarotmama> IT'S WHY I AM IN LOVE WITH PUNCHES

<Tarotmama> I FIND i CAN DO A LOT OF 3D STUFF AND LOVE DOING IT

<fab> you do the punching upside down for sure

<Tarotmama> I ACTUALLY DO THE PUNCHING RIGHT SIDE UP

<joy> so Jam can you explain the press sometime?

<Jambalaya> well, not much to explain, truly

[some chatter is deleted here]

<Jennifer> I used distress ink on it

<Janet> you like your distress inks? I love mine!

<Janet> but the first week or so I hated them

<Janet> (and of course I'd bought every color and every reinker)

<Janet> was wondering what kinda crap I'd thrown money out on this time

<BlackCats> lol

<joy> what do you use them on Janet?

<Janet> but once I got used to them, I started loving them more and more

<pmstamper> distress inks, how do you use them Janet, more as DTP than for the actual stamping?

<Janet> I use them for stamping and for aging backgrounds. what is cool (to me) is to use them to stamp a highlight layer, and a shadow layer of the same stamp, then a crisp one, like with document ink

<Jennifer> I'll have to use my distressed inks on some of the ums I got and show them to you.

<Janet> and I love spraying alcohol on them

<joy> alcohol on the distressed inks?

<Janet> yeah!

<Janet> I use, uh, this is disgusting, but I use my old steroid nasal spray bottles and just do a fine mist on it

[more chatter removed]

<Janet> it was just a journal type book, I modified one of the enchanted ink book kits, the one with the secret pocket in the middle

<Janet> i added a buncha signatures to it to make it with more pages

<Janet> and put on a hard cover

<Janet> with a bookcloth binding

<Janet> for him to take on trips, we travel a lot. and the secret pocket and book for receipts and money exchange rates

<Janet> it seemed like a great idea to me

<pmstamper> wow, if he lost it out in public, somebody got a great handmade book.

<BlackCats> sounds nice

<Janet> but when i asked if he was gonna take it on the trip we just took, he couldn't find it. and didn't look very hard

<Janet> yeah, I thought it was really nice

<Janet> but this card I made him, with that kliban cat that has the necktie on?

<Janet> I have that stamp and I stamped it over and over in black ink on a necktie shaped card. except one stamping that I embossed with the black glitter EP

<Janet> and put inside "you stand out in a crowd"

<Janet> and that silly thing is what he's got at work

<Jennifer> can you show me what book that was from redstick?

<Janet> sure, let me go look at her pages and get you the url

<Jennifer> thanks

<Jennifer> or jsut tell me the name of it

<Janet> she doesn't have this bookkit listed yet. I think it was called the secret pocket book?

<Jambalaya> double book

<Jambalaya> http://www.enchantedink.com/bookworks/bw2005b.htm

<Jambalaya> look on that page

<Janet> http://www.enchantedink.com/bookworks/bw2005b.htm and it's down about three pictures down

<Janet> LOL at least we found the same page

<Janet> it's the one with the black cover and small wooden hichi beads in the binding

<Jambalaya> 4th pic up from bottom

<Jambalaya> (which just happens to be my book<g>)

<Janet> yours with the extra embellies on it?

<Janet> those are way cool

<Jennifer> what?

<Jambalaya> ya

<Janet> Jen, go to that page and start at the bottom of it, the book labeled double book is it

<Janet> but I added more signatures into Mike's

<Janet> and added hard covers, with the paste paper covers becoming my cover inner pages

<Jambalaya> cool

<Jambalaya> and you made that for me janet????

<Janet> I shoulda! you wouldn't have already lost it

<Jennifer> I think i get that book in my book of the month

<Janet> Oh I hope you do! it's fun and easy to make and so impressive

<Janet> I made a seriously cool globe medallion for the front cover

<Janet> and covered the hard covers with old maps

<Janet> it was awesome

<Janet> (I have no ego problems<g> it was truly awesome)

<Jennifer> I gotta look up the email of what book club I"m in

<Janet> did you do the year one?

<Janet> You are so gonna love being in that.

<Janet> I made my brother the paper bag book. As a running journal.

<Janet> printed the lunch bags in the laser printer for the pages

<Janet> then set it up to have a month's worth of pages in each signature

<Janet> so he could take a week with him traveling and not the whole book

<Janet> and easily print out more pages

<Janet> or archive pages if he wanted to

<Janet> he prolly won't even use it, but he loved it. and I bet he didn't lose it

<Janet> I morphed a pic of him as a baby with one of the pics of him in last month's boston marathon

<Janet> with RUN MIKIE RUN on the cover

<Janet> tied the binding with shoe laces

<Janet> running shoe laces to be precise :)

<Jennifer> I was suppose to get the double book but I asked her to give me the other one instead

<Jennifer> Because I didn't understand that one

<Janet> mike (my brother this time) was mighty impressed with the whole log book system I designed for him.

<Jambalaya> once you've made a few books, they all get easier

<Janet> it's not that expensive to buy separately

<Jambalaya> and red's instructions are excellent

<Janet> it's one of the less expensive ones

<Janet> they are!

<Janet> that one is cool because the pocket in the middle is formed by the paper that makes the cover.

<Janet> you have it folded like a big W

<Janet> and cut the access hole out of the middle of the middle leg of the W

<Janet> (which you've glued together on the edges

<joy> well I need to go sammich some punches, thanks for a great class
