<Jambalaya> glycerin from a drug store
<scout> how long do I leave it in?
<scout> then do I just wash off with water or soap or what?
<Jambalaya> till it's not hard anymore<g>
<Jambalaya> yep
<Jambalaya> soap and water won't hurt a stamp
<scout> Hope someone hasn't just plugged in, this could be taken the wrong way
<Jambalaya> hiya cak
<cak> hiya
<Jambalaya> lol, scout
<cak> you softening up stamps again?
<scout> naw, we wus just talken obscene
<cak> well, don't let me stop you!
<scout> tee hee
<scout> Actually, the stamp is not as hard as it is bumpy
<Jambalaya> is it mounted?
<scout> like the surface is breaking up
<scout> yes, it is mounted
<cak> Hi Julie and Star
<Jambalaya> ohhh, hmmmm
<cak> (scout has a bumpy stamp
<Star> hey
<Julie> hi guys
<Jambalaya> hi julie and star
<scout> or pitted, or what ever. Just trying to describe it
<Jambalaya> scout, it may be too far gone to save then
<scout> Still stamps fine, just worries me
<cak> how does it stamp scout--interesting texture?
<scout> Like a teenage stamp, with acne.
<cak> lol
<scout> No texture, just regular
<Jambalaya> did you use any "commercial cleaners" on it?
<Jambalaya> hi pat
<pmstamper> hi there.
<Jambalaya> cuz some commercial cleaners have some nasty solvents in them
<scout> It is a big address stamp with a matching "return address" stamp and the smaller one is fine. Nothing wrong with it.
<scout> No, did not use commercial cleaner
<Star> this reminds me of 20 questions
<Jambalaya> lol
<Jambalaya> scout is trying to save a stamp
<scout> Only one of all my old stamps that has done this. One of the first ones I got, many years ago
<Jambalaya> well, not all rubber is created equal, either
<pmstamper> Is is hardened? or mushy?
<scout> I really don't use it a lot, probably wouldn't even buy it today.
<scout> pm, the rubber that isn't the raised impression part of the stamp
<BlackCats> back
* pmstamper makes it 22 questions
<BlackCats> hi everyone
<scout> is sort of pitted or bumpy.
<Jambalaya> hi bc
<scout> stamp stamps just fine. Just don't want it to spread or fall apart
<Jambalaya> well, about all you can do is soak it in glycerin
<scout> Gosh, do you suppose I ought to "isolate it" in case it's a virus?
<pmstamper> hmm, I haven't seen that before.
<Jambalaya> lol
<Jambalaya> maybe
<Jambalaya> are you sure it wasn't always this way, and you just noticed it?
<scout> Being a gardener, I know there are times you have to either isolate it or destroy it.
<Jambalaya> since it stamps ok, i mean
<scout> No, it hasn't been that way.
<pmstamper> maybe it wasn't cured enough originally and really is beginning to break down.
<Jambalaya> i don't know if it could be contagious or not
<scout> Jam, I hope you realize I am kidding?
<Jambalaya> well, but it maybe could be<g>
<Jambalaya> i throw away stamp pads that look funky<g>
<Star> Jam, I didn't think you threw anything away
<pmstamper> lol
<Jambalaya> we don't play with mildew in new orleans, if it's possible, it has to go
<Star> oh, the NO rot
<Jambalaya> cuz it will spread like wildfire
<Jambalaya> but i'm pretty sure rubber can't mildew<g>
<Jambalaya> we wouldn't have any tires<g>
<Star> stamps are so durable that I wish they would wear out...then, I could convince dh I needed more
<scout> Today in a pot outside I found a new mushroom grouping. They were like miniature yellow male parts all coming up in a clump. Really interesting. Haven't seen that type before, so isolated them so I could see what happens when they grow up!
<Jambalaya> lol
<Star> I am not even going there
<scout> The color was really pretty....
<Jambalaya> no, lets get to our topic for tonight<g>
<scout> geez, have I chased Kriz off?
<Jambalaya> i don't think so
<Star> you know , I don't have a mushroom stamp
<Star> do you?
<scout> several, but none that look like that!X
<Star> lol
<cak> I haven't even stamped with a mushroom
<scout> I do have one with a fairy peeking out from underneath....
<BlackCats> who has tried a technique that should have worked but somehow didn't?
<Star> oh, that sounds cute
<BlackCats> hmmmm, y'all must all be very accomplished stampers to judge by the silence <G>
<scout> we are all thinking hard of your question. bc
<cak> this really isn't a technique but I tried stamping a somewhat large stamp over a grid cut from tracing paper...
<Jambalaya> lol
<cak> I never could get that silly thing to stamp all the way
<Jambalaya> it's hard to admit we made something that didn't turn out well, heh?
<BlackCats> large stamps are sometimes very hard to get a good impression from
<cak> I think it's more like we used what didn't work as something else!
<scout> I always see black stamps on polished stone that look great, but when I do it, it just doesn't look right
<BlackCats> what kind of ink do you use?
<scout> Stazon
<BlackCats> try brilliance, that works well for me
<Jambalaya> thats a good one scout, then it makes you scared to stamp right on something the next time
<scout> that's what they tell you to use on p. stone
<Jambalaya> i don't care much for stazon, myself
<BlackCats> ah, well, guess I failed to read the directions <G>
<BlackCats> I only use stazon for something like acetate or shrink plastic
<pmstamper> if you are looking for a true black, Evo's document ink is the most opaque black I have ever used.
<Jambalaya> i like document ink, or memeories india ink when i need a quick dry permanent ink
<Jambalaya> gmta pat
<BlackCats> versafine is also a good one to try
<Jambalaya> wb kriz
<BlackCats> wb kriz
<Kriztina> ty
<pmstamper> ; )
<BlackCats> scout, do you buff the polished stone cs with tissue before you stamp on it?
<scout> if I remember
<Jambalaya> btw, memories india, and document ink are the same ink
<pmstamper> can someone say what exactly polished stone technique is?
<scout> Somehow when I do it, the black just looks too stark
<Jambalaya> alcohol inks on glossy
<pmstamper> ty
<BlackCats> oh, I thought you were indicating that the image wasn't clear enough
<scout> well, that too
<Jambalaya> scout, try the brilliance black, you might like that better
<pmstamper> then brilliance graphite black might be better to try--it is softer look.
<scout> ok dokey
<Jambalaya> pat stop that<g>
<BlackCats> maybe you are using an image that just doesn't work well with this technique
<scout> and I have that one
<pmstamper> lol, I'll stop talking and just use ditto for the rest of the night---lol
<BlackCats> lol
<Jambalaya> no no, i'm teasing
<BlackCats> brilliance graphite black is the one I'd pick if I could have just one inkpad
<BlackCats> that's what I use most often
<pmstamper> we have to start saying "jinx" when that happens.
<Jambalaya> i'd have to pick versamark if i could only have one pad
<Star> Oh, BC, what a horrible scenerio....one stamp pad
<BlackCats> versamark would be my second pick
<BlackCats> lol star
<BlackCats> yeah, we'd all be hurting if that were the rule
<pmstamper> Oh, I'm glad y'all mentioned versamark--
<pmstamper> I tried using it for resist technique and it did not turn out too well at first.
<Star> I love my versamark too
<BlackCats> did you heat set it pat?
<Jambalaya> at first? then it got better?
<pmstamper> No and I think I was not waiting for it to dry long enough.
<BlackCats> yeah, you have to let it get completely dry or heat set it for that to work well
<pmstamper> I finally had to stamp a sheet and then wait overnight for the whole thing to dry before adding anything else.
<Jambalaya> you could heat set
<pmstamper> I'll have to try the heat setting next time I use it--thanks.
<Jambalaya> you know it takes forever for anything to dry here
<BlackCats> I heat set just about everything I do just to make double sure
<Jambalaya> the only resist you don't heat set is the alabaster chalk resist
<Jambalaya> and if you don't know what alabaster resist is, come to class next saturday
<BlackCats> good, I need a refresher on that idea
<BlackCats> something I've never had come out correctly is using moonglows and FFF to make background paper
<Jambalaya> i never tried that one, sounds so messy<g>
<BlackCats> I always end up with something unusable for anything at all
<BlackCats> not too very messy but doesn't work for me
<BlackCats> tho I'm background challenged when it comes to anything other than ink
<cak> how come?
<BlackCats> don't know
<Jambalaya> i never had much luck with the marvy metallic marker thing
<BlackCats> me neither
<cak> I mean, why do you consider it unsuccessful? lumpy? muddy?
<BlackCats> it looks so easy when you see it at live conventions but nevers turns out that well at home
<BlackCats> lumpy and muddy, cak
<Jambalaya> could be the paper too though
<cak> lol--no half measures for you!
<BlackCats> not attractive at all
<BlackCats> lol
<Jambalaya> some glossy is more absorbent than others
<BlackCats> I've tried it on regular and glossy cs and neither turns out well
<Julie> I have found that technique is all in the paper you use
<Julie> the slicker the better
<BlackCats> the instructions I have say you can put several different colors of moonglows into the fff
<pmstamper> oh yes..that's true. You cannot use glossy picture printing paper as a substitute for glossy CS. It sucks up ink in an instant.
<Star> so true
<BlackCats> and that when you spray it the different colors will be seen individually but that's not what I get
<pmstamper> is this in a spray bottle?
<BlackCats> ah, so guess I need to get some high quality glossy and try again
<cak> do you think they mean different colors in different sprayers?
<Star> metalic markers swirls and run well on glossy, but sometimes I help them with a q tip
<BlackCats> yes, one of the little spritzer bottles just jhone sells
<Jambalaya> well, some colors would work better than others when you mix them
<Star> just like cocktails, Jam
<Jambalaya> for instance, blue and green might blend more than say blue and gold
<BlackCats> hmmmm, guess I need to experiment some more
<Star> how do you keep the metalic markers from splitting and tearing when using as an outline around cardstock? Every Christmas I run into this problem when I am using a lot of gold around the edges
<Jambalaya> you want the krylon to split
<pmstamper> oooh, that is a good question, Star.
<Star> yes, but after about 10 cards the edging get uneven
<Star> gets uneven because krylon is separating too much
<Jambalaya> ahhhh, you need to take care to always put the pen on the card in the same spot
<Jambalaya> and not use a lot of pressure
<Star> wow, I have not observed if I am using same spot or not
<Jambalaya> see?
<Star> se senora'
<Star> is that how you spell it?
<BlackCats> I've seen it suggested that you take a craft knife and cut a lil slit in the middle of the nib before you use it for the first time
<Jambalaya> oh and my rule is, i never ever let anyone else use my krylon
<BlackCats> and always put your cs into that groove
<Star> well, I too am selfish like Jam; so, it must be me screwin' it up
<pmstamper> lol
<Jambalaya> i never found a need to cut it, the first card you use it on will make the "groove" for you
<BlackCats> also, you can take the nib out and turn it around for a fresh nib
<Julie> and you can buy new nibs now too
<Jambalaya> oh and another thing about krylon
<pmstamper> does Krylon really dry on paper and not rub off? Because it rubs off on dominos.
<Star> hmmm, mine gets so frayed, I don't think it would fit upside down
<Jambalaya> when you think you shook it up enough? shake it that much longer
<BlackCats> uh huh
<Star> there's a whole lot of shakin goin on
<BlackCats> same with sailor glue pens
<Jambalaya> and then pump it on scrap paper till it's really puddling
<Jambalaya> it needs to be very wet to get a nice even line
<Jambalaya> and they do sell replacement nibs, i think m store has them
<Star> thanks all...jet lag again...going to bed early
<Jambalaya> nite star
<BlackCats> nite star
<Star> night
<BlackCats> sweet dreams
<Jambalaya> the copper krylon has a ton of grease in it
<Jambalaya> there is no amount of shaking that will help that<g>
<BlackCats> ah, good to know
<BlackCats> the new red pen is nice but a bit on the dry side no matter how much you shake and pump it
<Jambalaya> it's ok on some papers, but will "bleed" on more absorbent papers
<pmstamper> I didn't know about copper one. I only have silver and gold.
<pmstamper> what shade of red is it, jam?
<Jambalaya> copper has been around for years, but there are 2 new colors
<Jambalaya> a red gold, and a light gold
<Jambalaya> idunno, i haven't gotten the red one yet, monica?
<BlackCats> it's red/gold
<pmstamper> opps, sorry BC, I was not following along well.
<BlackCats> np
<BlackCats> I'm not sure I'd have gotten it if I'd seen it on paper before I bought it
<Jambalaya> good to know
<BlackCats> just as an edging it just didn't have the oomph I wanted so I had to use a ruler and make several passes to get the amount of color I wanted
<Julie> but you did a wonderful card using it not too long ago BC
<BlackCats> ty
<pmstamper> ? Do you have a scan?
<BlackCats> in the end it did turn out looking nice, just had to use a ruler and make several passes
<BlackCats> uhhhh, let me look pat
<BlackCats> that was a class I did for Red Castle not long ago
<BlackCats> http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=7345477&uid=1026244
<BlackCats> the second card
<Julie> my challenge seems to be either sponging or stenciling
<pmstamper> thanks. I am going to look. I have to enter the address by hand as it won't open another window for me or block and copy for some reason.
<Jambalaya> did you put the krylon on the stamp?
<Julie> mine never turn out as good as Evo
<Julie> when I sponge, I get the dreaded sponge lines
<BlackCats> no, the kryon was used to make the stripe along the edge of the card
<Jambalaya> oooooo i can solve that one julie
<Julie> I should just put you on speed dial Jam--lol!
<BlackCats> lol
<Jambalaya> get a wood dowel, or the leftover handle from a foam brush that fell apart
<Jambalaya> cut a piece of old pantyhose about 5" square
<Jambalaya> lay the pantyhose down on a flat surface
<Jambalaya> stack 2 cosmetic wedges on top of that
<Jambalaya> pull the pantyhose up around the sponges
<Jambalaya> then wind a rubber band around that
<Jambalaya> pull the pantyhose tight
<pmstamper> I got to look BC, great cards! Thanks!
<Jambalaya> so now you have a rounded sponge
<BlackCats> ty
<Jambalaya> make sense?
<cak> it gives a beautiful airbrushed look--I've seen it in person
<Julie> yes, thank you--I'm going to do that tomorrow
<Jambalaya> yep, no one believes it's sponged
<cak> but you have so much control over it (unlike spray)
<Jambalaya> i especially love this "tool" with distress inks, but it works with any inks
<Julie> cool idea Jam
<Julie> next, I've got to find Evo's stenciling 101 class--I'm sure she's got one
<Jambalaya> lol
<Jambalaya> ok, and the trick to stippling, is to dedicate a brush to a color, and start stippling off the edge of the paper and work in
<Julie> is it really suppose to be so light and you have to do a ton of layers to darken?
<Jambalaya> yes
<Julie> ok, then my problem is patience :)
<Jambalaya> yep<g>
<Jambalaya> patience is relative, if you love the look, you'll have more patience to accomplish it
<Julie> I guess I need a class in patience--can we add that in for next convention--lol!
<Jambalaya> uhhhhhh i don't think you can teach patience on line<g>
<Jambalaya> can't scan it<g>
<BlackCats> lol
